Pharmacy and Nursing Student Research and Evidence-Based Medicine Poster Session

Abstract:

Background:

According to the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy, as of July 2015, there are 132 US-based colleges and schools of pharmacy. The decision on which school students choose can be one of the most important decisions they will make in their lives. Many factors can affect these decisions, such as: curricular content, location/facilities, finances, and diversity. Although there are many factors that impact student decisions, the relative importance of these factors is unknown. This project will determine the importance of these factors in order to aid school recruitment.

Objectives:

The objective of this project is to determine …

Don’T Leave Without Them: Dispensing Asthma Medications To Pediatric Patients Upon Discharge Is Associated With Decreased Hospital Readmissions, Kelly J. Hiteshew, Thaddeus T. Franz, Kristen Lamberjack, Aleda M.H. Chen

Kelly J. Wright, R.Ph., Pharm.D.

Purpose: Asthma exacerbations are a leading cause of hospital and emergency department admissions at pediatric institutions. The objective of this study was to determine if patients who obtain discharge medications from a pediatric institution’s outpatient pharmacy after an admission for asthma have a lower thirty-day readmission rate than those who do not obtain discharge medications from the outpatient pharmacy. Methods: This multi-phase retrospective study included an initial chart review, an intervention period, and a second chart review of the intervention period. The chart reviews included patients ages two years and older with a discharge diagnosis of asthma or wheezing. During …

Workload Perceptions Of Pharmacists: Part Of Changing A National Trend, Fadi M. Alkhateeb, Omar F. Attarabeen, David Latif, Rachel Deliere Aug 2015

Workload Perceptions Of Pharmacists: Part Of Changing A National Trend, Fadi M. Alkhateeb, Omar F. Attarabeen, David Latif, Rachel Deliere

Pharmacy Practice & Administration

Background: A National Pharmacist Workforce Survey (NPW) survey is being conducted in the US every five years. The 2009- NPW project surveyed 1,391 participants, of which only 12 participants were from West Virginia. Therefore, such a small representation of West Virginian pharmacists may question the validity of extrapolating the results of the 2009 NPW survey to pharmacists in this state. As a result, a separate survey was needed to answer the questions about the perceived workload, work characteristics, and demographics for West Virginian pharmacists.

Objectives: The primary objective of this investigation was to identify the pharmacists’ perceptions of workload in …

Methylphenidate And Dexmethylphenidate Formulations In Children With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, David Sugrue May 2015

Methylphenidate And Dexmethylphenidate Formulations In Children With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, David Sugrue

Honors Scholar Theses

Purpose: To review the current literature on the various extended-release methylphenidate stimulant preparations regarding safety and efficacy in children and adolescents with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

Summary: The literature reviewed establishes the efficacy of the different long-acting methylphenidate stimulant formulations in treating children and adolescents with ADHD. Comparing and contrasting the different extended-release preparations allows for clinicians to help tailor ADHD treatments to individual patients. The extended release methylphenidate products provide the same efficacy as the immediate release formulations, but add the convenience of less frequent dosing. There are a few options for patients with difficulty swallowing tablets or capsules, including …

Patient Perceptions Of Pharmacist-Managed Clinics: A Qualitative Analysis, Jasmine Gonsalvo, Darin Ramsey, Ashley Vincent, Alison Walton, Zachary Weber, Jessica Wilhoite Jan 2015

Patient Perceptions Of Pharmacist-Managed Clinics: A Qualitative Analysis, Jasmine Gonsalvo, Darin Ramsey, Ashley Vincent, Alison Walton, Zachary Weber, Jessica Wilhoite

Alison M. Walton

Background: Pharmacist-managed clinics have consistently demonstrated improvement in patient outcomes. Quantitative research offers the benefit of objective outcomes to track progress toward therapeutic goals at pharmacist-managed clinics. While quantitative studies are readily available in the literature, there is a paucity of qualitative studies to capture the patients' perspectives of pharmacy services. Objective: To assess through the use of qualitative research methods patient perceptions of pharmacist-managed services within ambulatory care clinics that operate under a collaborative practice agreement. Methods: A semi-structured interview questionnaire was developed, pilot tested, and revised using a focus group of clinical pharmacists. The questionnaire was used to …

White Paper: Certification, Credentials, And Credentialing In Pharmacy, Donald Kishi, Jeffery A. Goad, Nancy Korman, Teresa Miller, Mary Ferrill, Holly Strom

The rapid evolution of the health care system has provided the pharmacy profession with opportunities to expand existing and develop new direct patient care roles. Two critical challenges that the pharmacy profession must contend with to ensure the continued expansion and acceptance of pharmacists in advanced practice roles (e.g. direct patient care roles) are: (1) To develop and implement a credible, systematic, standards-based, and profession-wide plan that includes a system for identifying the types of pharmacists' practices requiring credentials, a validated certification process, and a computerized credentialing process that is current, comprehensive, and easily accessible; (2) To establish the credibility …

Vaccinations Administered During Off-Clinic Hours At A National Community Pharmacy: Implications For Increasing Patient Access And Convenience, Jeffery Goad, Michael Taitel, Leonard Fensterheim, Adam Cannon Jan 2015

Vaccinations Administered During Off-Clinic Hours At A National Community Pharmacy: Implications For Increasing Patient Access And Convenience, Jeffery Goad, Michael Taitel, Leonard Fensterheim, Adam Cannon

Jeff Goad

PURPOSE Approximately 50,000 adults die annually from vaccine-preventable diseases in the United States. Most traditional vaccine providers (eg, physician offices) administer vaccinations during standard clinic hours, but community pharmacies offer expanded hours that allow patients to be vaccinated at convenient times. We analyzed the types of vaccines administered and patient populations vaccinated during off-clinic hours in a national community pharmacy, and their implications for vaccination access and convenience. METHODS We retrospectively reviewed data for all vaccinations given at the Walgreens pharmacy chain between August 2011 and July 2012. The time of vaccination was categorized as occurring during traditional hours (9:00 …

Assessment Of Web-Based Training (Wbt) Modules On Learning Facilitation For Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences (Appe) In Pediatrics, Jennifer L. Morris, Chad A. Knoderer

Chad A. Knoderer

OBJECTIVES: To assess the effectiveness of web-based training (WBT) modules to enhance and facilitate student pharmacists’ learning and their ability to provide pharmaceutical care to children during a pediatric advanced pharmacy practice experience (APPE). METHODS: Pediatric-specific WBT modules were developed for completion by APPE students during a 4- week rotation. Pediatric modules covered developmental pharmacology; antimicrobial use and monitoring; fluids, electrolytes, and dehydration; and drug information. Students were responsible for completing all modules within the first week of the APPE. Preassessments and postassessments consisted of 8 to 10 multiple-choice questions, with scores ranging from 0 to 100 points. Data were …
