• Bactericidal cyclic lipopeptide antibiotic
• Possesses negative charge which attracts calcium to form cationic complex
• Interacts with negatively charged phospholipid heads on bacterial cell membranes, leading to membrane depolarization and cell death

• Extremely rare - About 60 clinical cases reported
• Defined by an MIC greater than 1 mcg/mL

Ad5-GUCY2C-PADRE is a replication-deficient human type 5 recombinant adenovirus (Ad5) vaccine encoding guanylyl cyclase C (GUCY2C) fused to the PAn DR Epitope (PADRE). GUCY2C, a paracrine hormone receptor producing the second messenger cyclic GMP (cGMP), is selectively expressed by intestinal epithelial cells and a subset of hypothalamic neurons, but not other tissues. Importantly, GUCY2C is over-expressed in nearly all primary and metastatic human colorectal tumors. Preclinical studies in mice demonstrated selective tolerance of GUCY2C-specific CD4+ T cells, but not CD8+ T or B cells, necessitating inclusion of the exogenous CD4+ T helper cell epitope PADRE to maximize GUCY2C-specific CD8+ …

Purpose:

Ethanol serves as a solvent and microbial preservative in oral liquid medications and is the second most commonly used solvent in liquid medications following water. Despite widespread use of ethanol in liquid medications for neonates, the pharmacokinetics and toxicity of ethanol in young children are not well described. The aim of the current study is to quantify blood ethanol levels in neonates secondary to oral ethanol containing medications.

Methods:

 Studies have reported a knowledge gap Studies have reported a knowledge gap among adolescent and young adult heart heart transplant patients upon transitioning to adult cardiology practices.

 This population is vulnerable to life-threatening complications as they progress to adult care.

Framework/Methods:

We assess the current knowledge deficit of our adolescent and young adult patients and their caregivers in order to inform pediatric providers of their unique needs as they prepare to transition.

Na-K-2Cl cotransporter 2A (NKCC2A), also known as the bumetanide-sensitive cotransporter 1 (BSC1), transports Na+, K+ and Cl- with a stoichiometry of 1:1:2. NKCC2A is considered a kidney specific cotransporter. It is abundantly expressed in apical membrane of the tubular cells in the thick ascending limb of the loop of Henle (TALH) and in the macula densa. However, NKCC2 has also been found at low levels in different cells, including insulin-secreting ones. This secondary active transporter uses the energy stored in the electrochemical gradients of Na and K maintained by the Na/K-ATPase located on the basolateral membrane of the TALH. The …

Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the U.S. and millions of novel cancer cases are being diagnosed each year. While chemotherapy and ionizing radiation are effective treatments against these malignant tumors, the adverse effects that accompany such treatments are devastating. In order to find alternative treatment methods with less side effects, we turn to Eastern herbal medicine. Recent scientific research has found that Tripterygium wilfordii, an herbal medicine traditionally used to treat inflammation in China, contains compounds (triptolide and celastrol) that prevent the growth of solid tumors, induce apoptosis, and prevent metastasis of developed tumors.
