This guide will cover key concepts and LGBTQ terms as well as the health disparities faced by LGBTQ people. It includes key tips on how to best care for LGBTQ patients as well as how to make your …

Pharmacy Faculty/Staff Publications

Ovarian cancer is the fifth most commonly occurring malignancy in women, with the highest mortality rate among all the gynecological tumors. Microparticulate vaccine can serve as an immunotherapeutic approach with a promising antigenic delivery system without a need for conventional adjuvants. In this study, a microparticulate vaccine using whole cell lysate of a murine ovarian cancer cell line, ID8 was prepared by spray drying. Further, the effect of interleukins (ILs) such as IL-2 and IL-12 was evaluated in a separate study group by administering them with vaccine particles to enhance the immune response. The vaccine microparticles were administered to C57BL/6 …

OBJECTIVE: To review the chemistry, pharmacology, pharmacodynamics, pharmacokinetics, clinical efficacy, tolerability, dosing, drug interactions, and administration of canagliflozin, dapagliflozin, and empagliflozin, and comparing the benefit and risk aspects of using these agents in the older adult diabetes patient population.

DATA SOURCES, STUDY SELECTION, DATA EXTRACTION, AND DATA SYNTHESIS: A search of PubMed using the terms "SGLT-2 inhibitors," "canagliflozin," "dapagliflozin," "empagliflozin," "efficacy," and "tolerability" was performed to find relevant primary literature on each of the sodium/glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT-2) inhibitors currently approved for use in type 2 diabetes. Phase III trials for all agents were included. All English-language articles from 2010 …

Pharmacy Faculty/Staff Publications

Objective. To assess and improve student adherence to hand hygiene indications using radio frequency identification (RFID) enabled hand hygiene stations and performance report cards.

Design. Students volunteered to wear RFID-enabled hospital employee nametags to monitor their adherence to hand-hygiene indications. After training in World Health Organization (WHO) hand hygiene methods and indications, student were instructed to treat the classroom as a patient care area. Report cards illustrating individual performance were distributed via e-mail to students at the middle and end of each 5-day observation period. Students were eligible for individual and team prizes consisting of Starbucks gift cards in $5 …

A Pilot Chemical And Physical Stability Study Of Extemporaneously Compounded Levetiracetam Intravenous Solution, Chenzira D. Raphael, Fang Zhao, Susan E. Hughes, Katherine Juba

Doctoral External Publications

Levetiracetam is a commonly used antiepileptic medication for tumor-related epilepsy. However, the 100 mL intravenous (IV) infusion volume can be burdensome to imminently dying hospice patients. A reduced infusion volume would improve patient tolerability. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the stability of 1000 mg/25 mL (40 mg/mL) levetiracetam IV solution in sodium chloride 0.9%. We prepared levetiracetam 40 mg/mL IV solution and added it to polyvinyl chloride (PVC) bags, polyolefin bags, and polypropylene syringes. Triplicate samples of each product were stored at refrigeration (2–8°C) and analyzed on days 0, 1, 4, 7, and 14. Samples were subjected …

Stability Of Extemporaneously Prepared Sodium Benzoate Oral Solution, Andrew S. Decker, Melinda E. Lull, David Hutchinson

Pharmacy Faculty/Staff Publications

Purpose: Sodium benzoate (NaC7H5O2), a common food preservative, is the salt form of benzoic acid. It is used as an alternative treatment in patients with hepatic encephalopathy or urea cycle disorders as it is believed help stimulate ammonia removal via a non-urea cycle based pathway. Despite its use, sodium benzoate is not an FDA approved medication and has no commercially available oral formulations, although an IV formulation is available in combination with sodium phenylacetate (Ammonul®). The objectives of this study were to prepare a sodium benzoate solution and determine the stability of an extemporaneously prepared oral solution over a 90-day …

Too Many Cooks In The Kitchen? Interdisciplinary Team Discharge Clinic Prevents Hospital Readmissions, Nabila Ahmed-Sarwar, Lauren Decaporale-Ryan, Shaula Woz, Katie Lashway, Karen Mahler, Tracy Lewis, Robbyn Upham

Pharmacy Faculty/Staff Publications

Establishment of Interdisciplinary healthcare teams have shown to improve health outcomes and lower readmission rates in medically complex patients during hospitalization. Exploration of interventions has happened largely during the pre-discharge phase rather than post-discharge. To extend the team based approach, we implemented a pilot study of an interdisciplinary discharge clinic to determine what impact a biopsychosocial approach to care can have on hospital readmission rates. This work was conducted at a large family medicine residency-based practice, and facilitated by a physician, behavioral health clinicians, a clinical pharmacist, nurse care managers, and medical assistant. Patients were seen in the discharge clinic …

A guideline update and an expanded armamentarium have many physicians wondering how best to treat patients with COPD. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) carries a high disease burden. In 2012, it was the 4th leading cause of death worldwide.1,2 In 2015, the World Health Organization updated its Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) guidelines, classifying patients with COPD based on disease burden as determined by symptoms, airflow obstruction, and exacerbation history.3 These revisions, coupled with expanded therapeutic options within established classes of medications and new combination drugs to treat COPD (TABLE 1),3-6 have led to questions about interclass …

Medical Marijuana And Pharmacy Practice, Karl G. Williams Sep 2015

Medical Marijuana And Pharmacy Practice, Karl G. Williams

Pharmacy Faculty/Staff Publications

By way of the Compassionate Care Act of 2014, New York has become the 23rd state to create a process that will permit patients suffering from a “serious condition” to receive medical marijuana (or “cannabis”). Among those, it is the second state to prohibit the crude delivery system of smoking (Minnesota), and the third to involve pharmacists in the dispensing process (Connecticut and Minnesota). Because virtually every practicing pharmacist in New York will be caring for patients receiving some form of cannabinoid therapy, it is important to discuss the basic outlines established by the law and regulations.
