Proteins are large biological molecules located within all cells. They are considered the basic functional components of cells that allow them to operate appropriately. Genes consist of both DNA and RNA, and are the cellular components that code for the proteins. A biomarker is any cellular component that is an indication of a biological state. Therefore, genetic and protein biomarkers are specific genes and proteins, respectively, present in cells that indicate a specific biological state of a cell. Identification of proteins and genetic biomarkers in relative quantities has been found to reflect various disease states and age groups in humans. …

A woman dies every 2 minutes due to HPV related illness. Cervical cancer is the 5th most common cancer worldwide, with approximately 471,000 new cases diagnosed each year. There is a decreased risk of HPV related illnesses with vaccine development. However, lack of uptake is suspected to be impacted by parental knowledge deficit. Previously, these illnesses received little attention by parents and healthcare providers, even with the very evident increase in newly diagnosed patients. Without education, rate of infection will continue to increase as vaccine uptake remains stagnant. The purpose of this study is to determine how education from healthcare …

Pharmacy and Nursing Student Research and Evidence-Based Medicine Poster Session

The indigent population in America is defined as persons who do not have the financial means to support themselves and are below the federal/state poverty line. According to the 2010 United States Census, 13.8% of Americans are living below the poverty line. Indigent populations often rely on the help of others to provide for their basic needs, whether the help of family and friends or government support. Indigent women are disproportionately affected by unwanted, unplanned pregnancies. It is a continuous cycle that plagues families, often causing poverty and an increased dependence on the welfare system. In Medicaid-eligible populations, many women …

Medication errors are often times thought of as a patient receiving a medication that belongs to another patient, but many to do not understand the other areas that are constituted as “medication errors” are much broader. These errors include, but are not limited to, patient receiving the incorrect medication, improper dosing (too large or too small), wrong drug dispensed, incorrect methods of administration, mislabeling, and etc. Medication errors are such an important issue in the United State because it is the most medicated society in history.

Cortisol is a versatile hormone that possesses both catabolic and anabolic functions in the body, such as increasing the blood glucose levels through gluconeogenesis and metabolizing carbohydrates, proteins, and fats.1234 Cortisol levels are controlled by communication of the hyptothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axix (HPA axis). Plasma concentration of cortisol adheres to a diurnal rhythm, meaning that cortisol levels are highest in the morning and taper off throughout the day.

A Clinically Significant Interaction Between Tacrolimus And Multiple Proton Pump Inhibitors In A Kidney Transplant Recipient, Michelle Maguire, Thaddeus T. Franz, David S. Hains Sep 2012

A Clinically Significant Interaction Between Tacrolimus And Multiple Proton Pump Inhibitors In A Kidney Transplant Recipient, Michelle Maguire, Thaddeus T. Franz, David S. Hains

Pharmacy Practice Faculty Publications

The shared metabolism of PPIs and tacrolimus through the CYP enzyme system has been associated with clinically significant drug interactions, especially in patients who are classified as CYP 2C19 PMs. However, existing data are conflicting, indicating that a single mechanism does not account for all interactions. A drug interaction between tacrolimus and omeprazole, esomeprazole, but not lansoprazole, occurred in an 18-yr-old female kidney transplant recipient classified as a CYP 2C19 extensive (normal) metabolizer. This case suggests that further research is needed to establish the definitive mechanism of this potentially serious drug–drug interaction. Physicians prescribing PPIs in organ transplant recipients with …

Aromatase is essential for estrogen production and is the target of aromatase inhibitors, the most effective endocrine treatment for postmenopausal breast cancer. Peripheral tissues in women, including the breast, express aromatase via alternative promoters. Female mice lack the promoters that drive aromatase expression in peripheral tissues; thus, we generated a transgenic humanized aromatase (Arom(hum)) mouse line containing a single copy of the human aromatase gene to study the link between aromatase expression in mammary adipose tissue and breast pathology. Arom(hum) mice expressed human aromatase, driven by the proximal human promoters II and I.3 and the distal promoter I.4, in breast …

Cholesterol is the sole precursor of steroid hormones in the body. The import of cholesterol to the inner mitochondrial membrane, the rate-limiting step in steroid biosynthesis, relies on the formation of a protein complex that assembles at the outer mitochondrial membrane called the transduceosome. The transduceosome contains several mitochondrial and cytosolic components, including the steroidogenic acute regulatory protein (STAR). Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) induces de novo synthesis of STAR, a process shown to parallel maximal steroid production. In the hCG-dependent steroidogenic MA-10 mouse Leydig cell line, the 14-3-3γ protein was identified in native mitochondrial complexes by mass spectrometry and immunoblotting, …

Formaldehyde-fixed, paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissue repositories represent a valuable resource for the retrospective study of disease progression and response to therapy. However, the proteomic analysis of FFPE tissues has been hampered by formaldehyde-induced protein modifications, which reduce protein extraction efficiency and may lead to protein misidentification. Here, we demonstrate the use of heat augmented with high hydrostatic pressure (40,000 psi) as a novel method for the recovery of intact proteins from FFPE mouse liver. When FFPE mouse liver was extracted using heat and elevated pressure, there was a 4-fold increase in protein extraction efficiency, a 3-fold increase in the extraction of …

Many people store medications in bathrooms, which provide a moist, humid environment that speeds up the breakdown process of medications. The proper way to store medicines is in a cool, dry place out of the reach of children. Every year medications are also disposed of improperly presenting a risk to both humans and the environment. About one-third of all sold medications are unused. The most common ways patients dispose of medications in the United States are flushing down the toilet or sink, and throwing them away. Because of this pharmaceuticals have been found in groundwater, and drinking water proving hazardous …

Increased levels of estrogen metabolites are believed to be associated with cancers of the reproductive system. One potential dietary source of these metabolites that is commonly consumed worldwide is milk. In North America, dairy cows are the most common source of milk; however, goats are the primary source of milk worldwide. In this study, the absolute concentrations of unconjugated and total (unconjugated plus conjugated) estrone (E(1)) and 17β-estradiol (E(2)) were compared in a variety of commercial cow milks (regular and organic) and goat milk. A lower combined concentration of E(1) and E(2) was found in goat milk than in any …
