In 2018, 49% of all pregnancies in the United States were unintended, with women with a lower- income status being five times more likely to experience an unplanned pregnancy. Tennessee has a high rate of unintended pregnancies, particularly among the uninsured, low-income, and rural teen populations; some 22% of these unintended pregnancies end in abortion. Oral or transdermal contraceptives that are affordable and accessible for women of childbearing age can reduce unintentional pregnancies. Current evidence recommends and supports deprescribing medications to reduce polypharmacy in the hospice population. The project aim was to determine accurate percentages of deprescribing at three time periods: before hospice admission, at hospice enrollment, and four weeks post hospice enrollment. This project was a retrospective review of the medication administration record (MAR) of patients admitted into Sharp Hospice from a Sharp Healthcare facility. Sharp Hospice, in California, USA, admitted 164 patients during August 2020. Of those, 34 patients were eligible for inclusion in this retrospective quality improvement review. About half of the geriatric population who take at least one medication find medication adherence challenging. Average adherence of an elderly patient taking one medication a day is about 80%. This adherence decreases to about 50% for patients taking medications four times a day. Nonadherence can lead to a myriad of preventable adverse effects that can reduce the quality of life and even result in death. In the United States, $100-300 billion could be saved in health care costs due to adverse effects of poor medication adherence. The opioid epidemic is a national health emergency in the United States, with over 128 people dying each day due to an opioid overdose. It is estimated that 4.3 million people over the age of 12 use opioids without a medical need, and 1.3 million youth ages 12-17 use opioids inappropriately. Drug overdose deaths have become the leading cause of accidental death in the United States, prompting the U.S. Surgeon General and the World Health Organization to advise that more Americans have access to naloxone and understand how to use this life-saving drug correctly. The purpose of this systematic review was to integrate research evidence from studies published from 2010 to 2020 on the relationship between administration of dexmedetomidine and severity/prevalence of postprocedural delirium in patients in the surgical intensive care unit. In this review, clinical trial studies were recovered by searching the MEDLINE Complete and PubMed databases and utilizing MeSH terminology search.
