Language-Based Strategies That Support Person-Centered Communication In Formal Home Care Interactions With Persons Living With Dementia, Reanne G. Mundadan Jun 2022

Language-Based Strategies That Support Person-Centered Communication In Formal Home Care Interactions With Persons Living With Dementia, Reanne G. Mundadan

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Background. Several studies recommend language-based strategies for communication with persons living with dementia. Language-based strategies improve coherence, clarity, reciprocity, and continuity of interactions. Person-centered communication (PCC) strategies are the gold standard, including facilitation, recognition, validation, and negotiation. Only one study has examined the overlap between language-based strategies and PCC in long-term care. Little is known about which language-based strategies support PCC in home care. Accordingly, this study investigated the overlap between language-based strategies and PCC in home care interactions. Method. Conversation analysis of 30 audio-recorded routine care interactions between home care workers and persons living with dementia was conducted. The …

Hippocampal Connectivity In Parkinson's Disease, Landis Llewelyn May 2021

Hippocampal Connectivity In Parkinson's Disease, Landis Llewelyn

Honors Theses

Background: This thesis was conducted in order to investigate possible connections between functional connectivity of the hippocampus in individuals who have Parkinson’s disease.

Methods: The MRI images, the clinical data, and the demographic data of 93 individuals with PD and 18 individuals without PD were obtained from the Parkinson's Progression Markers Initiative. Resting-state fMRI data from a group of PD patients was compared to a control group of non-PD patients by using previously published methods with FMRIB Software Library (FSL) as well as Analysis of Functional Neuroimages (AFNI).

Results: Compared to the control (non-PD) group, results bilaterally showed lesser connectivity …

Effects Of Horticultural Therapy In Long Term Care Facilities On Behavioral And Psychological Symptoms Of Dementia, Morgan Scearce Apr 2019

Effects Of Horticultural Therapy In Long Term Care Facilities On Behavioral And Psychological Symptoms Of Dementia, Morgan Scearce

Spring Showcase for Research and Creative Inquiry

My project outlines how horticultural therapy could be used as an intervention to help with the behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia. I have created a model that can be viewed on my poster outlining the process of how to conduct a horticultural therapy intervention properly and the positive effects that would come from the intervention

Improving Transitions In Care For People With Dementia: The Cared Tool, Yuwen Deng, Jamie Bisset, Silk Lim, Maryssa Edwards Dec 2017

Improving Transitions In Care For People With Dementia: The Cared Tool, Yuwen Deng, Jamie Bisset, Silk Lim, Maryssa Edwards

Community Engaged Learning Final Projects

Transitions in Care are challenging for people with dementia due to impairments in communication and disorientation from being in a foreign environment. Transitions in care have lead to incidents of unnecessary physical and chemical restraints of this vulnerable population. To investigate how to optimize care transitions, qualitative descriptive information was collected through three personal interviews to gain a broader understanding of mechanisms of care transitions in London, ON. After conducting interviews and literature review, the CARED Tool was developed. The CARED Tool promotes social inclusion of patients with dementia through recognizing that people with dementia have complex needs, thereby allowing …

The Correlation Of Size Of Core Network And Frequency Of Contacts With Agitation And Positive Affect In Elderly With Dementia, Amal Ali Al Ghassani Dec 2017

The Correlation Of Size Of Core Network And Frequency Of Contacts With Agitation And Positive Affect In Elderly With Dementia, Amal Ali Al Ghassani

Theses and Dissertations

In the country of Oman, care needs of older adults are primarily provided by family members in the home. The study was guided by socioemotional selectivity theory, the environmental vulnerability hypothesis, and the need-driven dementia-compromised behavior theories. The central premise was that the size of the person’s activities of daily living (ADL) core network and frequency of contact with the ADL core network would predict agitation and affect. A smaller core network with a higher frequency of contact may be better at identifying and treating the person’s unmet needs. A secondary premise was that the emotional closeness of the core …

Pneumonia Readmissions In Older Adults With Dementia, Sara Knox Jan 2017

Pneumonia Readmissions In Older Adults With Dementia, Sara Knox

Health Sciences Program Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate pneumonia readmissions of older adults with dementia. Readmission rates and predictive factors of older adults with and without dementia were compared in this study. Subjects: A nationally representative sample of 389,198 discharge records, representing 370,003 patients, was extracted from the 2013 Nationwide Readmission Database. Methods: Descriptive statistics were utilized to describe the demographics of the sample population. Differences between groups were analyzed using chi-square or t test statistics as appropriate. A generalized linear model was used to examine predictive factors for pneumonia readmissions. Results: Older adults with dementia had a readmission …
