The Effects Of Alcohol Consumption On Cognitive Decline, Ashley Highland Jan 2024

The Effects Of Alcohol Consumption On Cognitive Decline, Ashley Highland

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between alcohol use and cognitive decline among young adults. This study is a quantitative study in which secondary data was used as a means to gather information from the 2022 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) database. In this study, the researcher analyzed the data using descriptive statistics and inferential statistics, such as independent sample t-test, correlations analysis, ANOVA, and Chi-Square test. The findings in this research revealed that there is a significant relationship between cognitive decline and binge drinking in young adults. Meaning, young adults who binge drink are …

Histone acetylation, a crucial epigenetic modification, is governed by histone acetyltransferases (HATs), that regulate many biological processes. Functions of HATs in insects are not well understood. We identified 27 HATs and determined their functions using RNA interference (RNAi) in the model insect, Tribolium castaneum. Among HATs studied, N-alpha-acetyltransferase 40 (NAA40) knockdown caused a severe phenotype of arrested larval development. The steroid hormone, ecdysone induced NAA40 expression through its receptor, EcR (ecdysone receptor). Interestingly, ecdysone-induced NAA40 regulates EcR expression. NAA40 acetylates histone H4 protein, associated with the promoters of ecdysone response genes: EcR, E74, E75, and HR3, and causes an increase …

Research done on the plantarflexor MTU have shown the degree of achilles tendon and muscle fascicle shortening/stretching is specific to demands of the activity. To expand on this principle, we wanted to explore if a similar relationship exists with the Biceps Femoris MTU. We predict that the biceps femoris (long head) muscle tendon unit (MTU) will behave similarly to the Achilles tendon complex exhibiting the 80/20 principle during dynamic activities (jogging, walking) and the muscle fascicle will lengthen more than the MTU during stationary exercise (Nordic hamstring curls, Romanian deadlifts).

The relationship between periodontitis and Alzheimer's disease (AD) has garnered significant attention due to the potential influence of chronic oral inflammation on neurodegenerative processes. Our hypothesis is supported by the oral-microbiome-brain axis and highlights the possibility that chronic periodontitis contributes to cognitive decline by promoting systemic inflammation and neuroinflammation, mediated by specific pathogenic microorganisms within the oral microbiome. Our findings reveal a strong association between elevated levels of Porphyromonas gingivalis and Treponema denticola, red complex bacteria, and markers of systemic inflammation, such as C-reactive protein (CRP) and pro-inflammatory cytokines. Additionally studies have demonstrated that beta amyloid plaque in rat …

Fast-Track To The Frontline: Evaluating A Surgical Technology Program’S Response To A Workforce Shortage, Jill Theresa Davis Jan 2024

Fast-Track To The Frontline: Evaluating A Surgical Technology Program’S Response To A Workforce Shortage, Jill Theresa Davis

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

As the demand for Certified Surgical Technologists (CSTs) continues to grow, traditional educational pathways struggle to meet the urgent workforce needs within the healthcare sector. This paper presents a comprehensive evaluation of a pilot fast-track surgical technology program implemented at Missoula College, designed to expedite the training of surgical technologists while maintaining high educational standards. Employing a mixed-methods research approach, this study assesses both the quantitative outcomes and qualitative experiences of participants in the fast-track program compared to traditional pathways. Key findings indicate that the fast-track program not only reduces the time required for training but also adequately prepares students …

Project-Based Learning And Student Outcomes In Health Professions Education: A Literature Review, Melanie Aley, Regina Lee, Jordana Wang, Joy Wang, Sophia Zheng Jan 2024

Project-Based Learning And Student Outcomes In Health Professions Education: A Literature Review, Melanie Aley, Regina Lee, Jordana Wang, Joy Wang, Sophia Zheng

Health Professions Education

Purpose. Project-based learning (PjBL) is an instructional method designed to help students cultivate skills transferable beyond traditional education systems focused on didactic learning. This literature review aims to critically summarise existing literature on PjBL and its value in tertiary health professions curricula, especially with regards to cognitive, affective and behavioral student outcomes. In doing so, this study seeks to inform teaching and learning approaches that nurture skills desirable in professional settings.

Method. An electronic search for relevant English journal articles was conducted using four databases; EBSCOhost, Medline, Web of Science and Scopus. Studies which pre-date 2012, fail to …
