Background: The ubiquitous use of electronic health records (EHRs) during medical office visits using a computer monitor and keyboard can be distracting and can disrupt patient-health care provider (HCP) nonverbal eye contact cues, which are integral to effective communication. Provider use of a remote medical scribe with face-mounted technology (FMT), such as Google Glass, may preserve patient-HCP communication dynamics in health care settings by allowing providers to maintain direct eye contact with their patients while still having access to the patient’s relevant EHR information. The medical scribe is able to chart patient encounters in real-time working in an offsite location, …

Understanding The Factors Influencing The Perception Of Organizational Sustainability Among Healthcare Professionals (Hcps) Post The Patient Protection And Affordable Care Act, Funso A. Olufade
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Background and Purpose of the Study: Healthcare costs in the United States has continued to increase annually, and new policy's attempt at protocol changes in healthcare practices does not ensure quality care delivery. An example of these policies include provisions and new guidelines under the 2010 healthcare legislation, - The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA). The premise with the Affordable Care Act (ACA) is increased healthcare access for patients. However, not responsibly balancing the increased demand with the escalating cost of care creates an unsustainable system (Department of Health & Human Services, 2015). Healthcare organizations, including hospitals …

Play is a major topic of conversation when discussing childhood development is associated with creativity and imagination. Although there has been some research involving the creative process amongst children, little has been explored in regards to expressive arts as a technique to further current studies on play. This paper presents a combined method of intermodal expressive arts therapies and play therapy techniques to aid in the fostering of creativity within children with disabilities by utilized the theoretical framework provided by the Expressive Therapies Continuum (ETC). A current review of literature on the ETC, cognitive functions, and expressive arts modalities is …
Thermoregulatory Dysfunction In Multiple Sclerosis, Dustin R. Allen
Thermoregulatory Dysfunction In Multiple Sclerosis, Dustin R. Allen
Applied Physiology and Wellness Theses and Dissertations
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a progressive neurological disease of the central nervous system (CNS) affecting an estimated 2.3 million people worldwide. Marked by lesions in the brain and spinal cord, MS leads to conduction abnormalities in the CNS. Evidence suggests ~60% of individuals with MS experience temporary worsening of their symptoms upon exposure to heat. Adding complexity, observational evidence suggests these individuals exhibit reduced thermoregulatory responses in upon increases in core temperature. Consequently, these individuals face a vicious cycle of heat sensitivity and thermoregulatory dysfunction, substantially impacting their quality of life. With this in mind, our lab is dedicated to …

Energy Expenditure Performing Hands-Only Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation During Average Emergency Response Times, Johnathan Valdez, Savanna Edson, Micha Emmel, Jesus Rivera-Macias, Benjamin Adams, Mary Casilla
2018 Symposium
Early cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) by civilian responders is a critical aspect in the survival of cardiac arrest patients. According to the American Red Cross (ARC), the average response time to a 911 call is 8-12 min. High-quality CPR performed as soon as possible following cardiac arrest considerably increases a person’s chances of survival and recovery. It is possible that fatigue may decrease CPR quality, and to date no data exists on the metabolic cost of preforming hands-only CPR. PURPOSE: To determine the energy expenditure of performing hands-only CPR during the average emergency response time. METHODS: Eight college-aged participants (23.6 ± …

Utilization Of Telehealth Technology In Addiction Treatment In Colorado, J. Michael Faragher, Ying Shan Doris Zhang, Virginia Low, Demi Folds, Mita Johnson
Counseling Psychology: Faculty Scholarship
The growing presence of electronic technology in the health service professions is redefining the boundaries of counseling services. Commonly referred to as telehealth, utilization of electronic communication strategies to expand connectedness has opened new frontiers in behavioral health through applications ranging from digital phones, interactive video sessions, to virtual supervision. Substantial research suggests that telehealth is generally equal in effectiveness to traditional forms of treatment, especially for those individuals struggling with substance abuse problems. Unfortunately, research also suggests that telehealth is often underutilized when it comes to providing addiction treatment services. Telehealth trends in Colorado were examined using a Telehealth …

Dancing, Mindfulness, And Our Emotions: Embracing The Mind, Body, And Sole, Alisha M. Collins
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This capstone project examines dance, as an intervention and mindfulness practice that assists with managing our emotions. There is a need for dance therapy in social institutions such as, healthcare facilities, schools, and community centers. Dance therapy has the potential to reduce negative emotions, create mindfulness, improve self-expression, and promote a healthy well-being. I am proposing that dance therapy is applied as a regular practice in social institutions to develop mindfulness and promote emotional stability.
In this study, I argue that dance therapy can contribute to our well-being long term. In addition to this written thesis, a visual component of …
Characterization Of The Cip Protease System In The Growth And Development Of Chlamydia Trachomatis, Nicholas A. Wood
Characterization Of The Cip Protease System In The Growth And Development Of Chlamydia Trachomatis, Nicholas A. Wood
Honors Thesis
Chlamydia is an obligate intracellular bacterium that differentiates between two distinct forms during its developmental cycle: elementary bodies (EBs) and reticulate bodies (RBs). The EB is the small, electron dense form that mediates host cell infection. Within the cell, the EB differentiates into the RB, which is the replicative form that develops within a host membrane derived vesicle, termed an inclusion. RBs replicate within this inclusion and eventually differentiate back into EBs. Upon accumulation of EBs at the end of the developmental cycle, the host cell lyses, releasing the EBs for infection of proximal cells. The EB and RB have …
Intestinal Permeability And Microbial Dysbiosis In Acute Coronary Syndrome (Miacs Study), Tarik Z. Alhmoud
Intestinal Permeability And Microbial Dysbiosis In Acute Coronary Syndrome (Miacs Study), Tarik Z. Alhmoud
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
Background: Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality. Metabolic syndrome and obesity are major risk factors for atherosclerosis and ACS. Dysbiosis plays an important role in metabolic syndrome and obesity. Studies show a markedly increased risk of heart attacks in patients with high levels of the pro-atherogenic metabolite trimethylamine-N-Oxide (TMAO). TMAO is produced by the intestinal microbial flora through metabolism of dietary phospholipids; Gram-negative bacteria (Phylum Proteobacteria) is the major source of TMAO metabolism. Patients with obesity and metabolic syndrome have a defective intestinal tight-junctional (TJ) barrier, which allows paracellular permeation of luminal antigens such …

Uncertainty And Competing Priorities In Shared Clinical Decision-Making, Dennis J. Baumgardner
Journal of Patient-Centered Research and Reviews
In this issue introduction, the editor-in-chief of Journal of Patient-Centered Research and Reviews observes that a connecting thread among the articles published therein is an element of uncertainty among patients and clinicians. Competing priorities for the patient also may be present. Several approaches to overcoming these prevalent conflicts to delivery of better health care have been proposed, the most important of which may be clinicians embracing a will to practice shared decision-making.

Role Of The Snf2 Homolog, Irc20, In Yeast Genome Maintenance, Deena Mohamed Galal Eldin Ahmed
Theses
In eukaryotes, DNA is wrapped around histone proteins forming a highly compact structure, the chromatin. All DNA-based processes must occur within the complex organization of the chromatin, and this requires modulation of its structure when needed. This is accomplished by covalent histone modifications that alter histone-DNA contacts, as well as through the actions of ATP-dependent chromatin remodelers. These multi-subunit complexes play major roles in transcription regulation, replication and repairing DNA damage. This thesis aims to characterize a poorly studied member of the SWI/SNF family of ATPases/helicases, Irc20, from Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Previously, Irc20 has been shown to be involved in …
The Effect Of Β-Caryophyllene On Doxorubicin-Induced Cardiotoxicity, Hasan Al-Taee
The Effect Of Β-Caryophyllene On Doxorubicin-Induced Cardiotoxicity, Hasan Al-Taee
Theses
Doxorubicin is an effective and widely used chemotherapeutic drug. However, its clinical use is limited due to cardiotoxicity which it causes that appears in the form of dilated cardiomyopathy. Many efforts have been devoted to developing/discovering agents which can counter DOX-induced cardiotoxicity. The present study was undertaken to evaluate the cardioprotective potential of β Caryophyllene (BCP), a dietary phytocannabinoid, in a rat model of DOX-induced acute and chronic cardiotoxicity. BCP is widely found in various herbs and spices and is a full agonist of the cannabinoid receptor type 2 (CB2) and exhibits potent anti-inflammatory effects. In the present …

MicroRNA (miRNA) isoforms ("isomiRs") and tRNA-derived fragments ("tRFs") are powerful regulatory non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs). In human tissues, both types of molecules are abundant, with expression patterns that depend on a person's race, sex and population origin. Here, we present our analyses of the Prostate Cancer (PRAD) datasets of The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) from the standpoint of isomiRs and tRFs. This study represents the first simultaneous examination of isomiRs and tRFs in a large cohort of PRAD patients. We find that isomiRs and tRFs have extensive correlations with messenger RNAs (mRNAs). These correlations are disrupted in PRAD, which suggests disruptions …

Inductive And Deductive: Ambiguous Labels In Qualitative Content Analysis, Mohammad Reza Armat, Abdolghader Assarroudi, Mostafa Rad, Hassan Sharifi, Abbas Heydari
The Qualitative Report
The propounded dualism in Content Analysis as quantitative and qualitative approaches is widely supported and justified in nursing literature. Nevertheless, another sort of dualism is proposed for Qualitative Content Analysis, suggesting the adoption of "inductive" and/or "deductive" approaches in the process of qualitative data analysis. These approaches have been referred and labelled as "inductive" or "conventional"; and "deductive" or "directed" content analysis in the literature. Authors argue that these labels could be fallacious, and may lead to ambiguity; as in effect, both approaches are employed with different dominancy during the process of any Qualitative Content Analysis. Thus, authors suggest more …

Brain cancer, particularly astrocytomas, is one of the ten most common related deaths related to cancer. Temozolomide (TMZ), an oral alkylating chemotherapy drug, is used to treat anaplastic astrocytoma and glioblastoma multiforme. A few advantages of TMZ are its ability to cross the blood-brain barrier, its small size, and it is rapidly absorbed in the small intestine. Since this drug is advantageous to brain cancer patients, it is important to study the extraction of this drug. In addition, it is important to study administering this drug via microdialysis as the efficiency of the drug could increase. In mice brain tumor …
