Orientation Using Standardized Patients Increases Athletic Training Student Communication Effectiveness When Transitioning To Clinical Education Experiences, Jl Frye, Ma Belbey, Kj Armstrong
Clinical Practice in Athletic Training
Context: Transitioning from didactic to clinical education is overwhelming for novice athletic training students. The change in the learning environment often causes anxiousness as students get acquainted with the clinical site, preceptor expectations, and demonstrating clinical skills during patient care. Learning to communicate provides additional challenges as students must convey information to their patients, practice active listening, relay patient information to their preceptor, and possibly navigate conflict management. Simulation-based orientations have been effective in other healthcare professions to ease this transition; however, it has not been examined in professional athletic training students. Methods: The study used a convenience sample of …

Single Limb Postural Control Throughout A Collegiate Football Season, L Custer, S Tomasi, J Lima, A Rieland
Clinical Practice in Athletic Training
Context: It is estimated that college football players sustain an average of 3 subconcussive blows to the head per game. Limited research has demonstrated that collegiate football players present with decreased static postural control, as measured using the Balance Error Scoring System, at the end of season compared to baseline. Interestingly, neurocognitive test scores in collegiate football players were not found to differ preseason, midseason and postseason. Authors hypothesized that using neurocognitive tests may not have been sensitive enough to detect the effects of the subconcussive impacts. Force plate data provides valid information of postural control. The purpose of this …

Sex Differences In The Effects Of Cortisol On Muscle Characteristics: A Meta-Analysis, Natalie Bitetti
CMC Senior Theses
Background: Cortisol plays a central role in both muscle breakdown and growth. These effects are highly dependent on dose and interactions with other hormones. It is known that men and women show considerable differences in their muscle structure and physiology, which are largely driven by hormonal differences. Cortisol release patterns may also vary between the sexes, with current research showing considerable disagreement. The interplay between cortisol and muscle, two highly variable and sexually dimorphic factors, may prove to have different effects in males versus females.
Objective: This meta-analysis integrates existing research on sex differences in cortisol-muscle physiology with existing research …

Student-Faculty Research - College of Physical Therapy
Research done on the plantarflexor MTU have shown the degree of achilles tendon and muscle fascicle shortening/stretching is specific to demands of the activity. To expand on this principle, we wanted to explore if a similar relationship exists with the Biceps Femoris MTU. We predict that the biceps femoris (long head) muscle tendon unit (MTU) will behave similarly to the Achilles tendon complex exhibiting the 80/20 principle during dynamic activities (jogging, walking) and the muscle fascicle will lengthen more than the MTU during stationary exercise (Nordic hamstring curls, Romanian deadlifts).

Effects Of Body Weight Loading On Arch Height, Anastasia Bjelopetrovich
Effects Of Body Weight Loading On Arch Height, Anastasia Bjelopetrovich
Honors Theses
Deformation of the medial longitudinal arch under body weight loading is often assessed using the Arch Height Index Measurement System. This system assesses change in arch height between sitting and standing, estimated to be 10 and 50% of body weight, respectively. However, body weight forces during ambulation exceed these loads, therefore limiting our understanding of arch deformation under ambulatory load ranges. Thus, the study aims were 1) to assess if sitting and standing arch height differed from that seen under 10 and 50% body weight using a force target-matching procedure, and 2) to characterize the relationship between arch deformation and …

Exercise and Nutrition Sciences Faculty Publications
Diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound has potential clinical utility in characterizing pathological muscle tissue. Sonography has been long proposed as method of assessing muscle damage due to neuromuscular diseases such as muscular dystrophy, and more recently, changes in body and tissue composition associated with muscle wasting disorders such as sarcopenia. The use of quantitative ultrasound as an adjunct diagnostic procedure has different technical challenges than the traditional use of ultrasound in clinical medicine. Operator-dependent technique and variation are critical considerations when obtaining measures of echointensity (i.e., tissue composition estimates) and tissue dimensions (i.e., muscle thickness) – key elements of the ultrasound assessment …
The Physiological Consequences Of Bed Rest, Kristin J. Stuempfle, Daniel G. Drury
The Physiological Consequences Of Bed Rest, Kristin J. Stuempfle, Daniel G. Drury
Health Sciences Faculty Publications
Bed rest often is used to treat a wide variety of medical conditions. However, bed rest results in profound deconditioning of the body. Bed rest reduces the hydrostatic pressure gradient within the cardiovascular system, reduces muscle force production, virtually eliminates compression on the bones, and lowers total energy expenditure. This review focuses on the deconditioning that occurs in the cardiovascular, muscular, and skeletal systems following bed rest. Reduction in plasma volume reduces cardiac preload, stroke volume, cardiac output, and ultimately, maximal oxygen consumption. Skeletal muscle volume, muscle cross sectional area, and fiber cross sectional area decrease, which results in diminished …
