Policy Proposal For Integrating Pediatric Mental Health Into Nursing Practice In Uganda, Giselle S. Perez
Doctor of Nursing Practice Final Manuscripts
Abstract
Background: Mental health disorders affect over 1 in 7 individuals aged 10 to 19 globally. In low- and middle-income countries like Uganda, limited access to mental health specialists and pervasive stigma exacerbate the gap in care. Nurses, often the first point of contact, typically lack adequate pediatric mental health training. The proposal aims to address this gap by equipping nurses with the knowledge and competencies to identify, intervene, and support children with mental health disorders. Purpose: This proposal advocates for implementing targeted, continuing education in pediatric mental health for Ugandan nurses. The goal is to enhance the quality of …

Social Work Dissertations - Archive
This study investigated the lived experiences of individuals living with HIV (PLWH) in the Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) area of Texas during the COVID-19 pandemic, using an Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) framework. The research examined the intersection of health, social dynamics, and psychological resilience among PLWH, who faced compounded vulnerabilities due to systemic inequities and the dual public health crises of HIV and COVID-19. Through semi-structured interviews with ten participants from diverse backgrounds, the study captured the profound impacts of disrupted healthcare systems, heightened stigma, and social isolation on this marginalized population. The findings reveal that the pandemic exacerbated existing inequities …

Intentions To Seek Mental Health Services Among Arabs In The United States: The Effect Of A Tailored Web-Based Educational Video, Ohoud Alosais
Theses and Dissertations--Nursing
Arabs in the United States (U.S.) are exposed to different stressors that place them at high risk of developing adverse mental health outcomes. Compared to other minority groups, Arabs in the U.S. have reported significantly higher levels of anxiety and depression. Researchers have found disparities between the need for mental health services (MHS) and actual utilization among Arabs in the U.S. Understanding the intrapersonal factors involved in MHS’ help-seeking behavior among Arabs in the U.S. is essential to reduce the burdens caused by untreated mental health disorders in this population. Therefore, the purpose of this dissertation was to enhance our …

Hiv-Related Shame: A Grounded Theory Study Exploring The Impact Of Psychoeducation On The Lives Of People Living With Hiv, Melissa Stuntz
DNP Research Projects
Abstract
Over the past 40 years there have been significant advances in medical care for HIV. However, many people living with HIV (PLWH) experience internalized stigma in the form of HIV-related shame. This shame has been found to negatively impact mental health, patient relationships, and adherence to healthcare. This grounded theory DNP scholarly project was aimed at developing a novel theoretical framework and practice to improve quality of life including increased viral load suppression in PLWH. To this aim, a psychoeducation curriculum based on shame resilience theory was implemented with two participants in an inner-city healthcare clinic. While the shame …

Stigma For Caring For Those With Mental Health Issues In The Student Nurse Community: A Survey, Matthew Boyd
Undergraduate Honors Theses
People living with a mental health issue is elevated both nationally and internationally, and the likelihood of a person interacting with someone who has a mental health issue is high. It is even higher for those who work in the health care profession, so understanding their attitudes on this matter is important. As a review of current literature reveals, there is not only stigma in the health care system, but there is also stigma among health care professionals and students. One of the groups of students that has not been researched to a great extent is nursing students and the …

Tne Effect Of In Our Own Voice On Stigma In Bsn Students, Stephanie Steele
DNP Projects
Stigma regarding mental illness is common throughout the world, and can lead to social isolation, low self-esteem, loss of income and employment, deterioration of life quality, impeded access to medical care, and a shorter lifespan for people diagnosed with a mental illness (Cleary, Deacon, Jackson, Andrew, & Chan, 2012; Corrigan et al., 2013). The purpose of this DNP project was to provide an evidence-based intervention called In Our Own Voice (IOOV) to first semester sophomore nursing students and assess its impact on their perceptions of mental illness stigma. Understanding Stigma In Pre-Nursing College Students, Claire E. Coxwell
Honors Theses
The purpose of this study is to understand patterns of stigma among pre-nursing students. Past research has suggested that college students stigmatize mental illnesses. This study builds upon existing research and looks at how pre-nursing students perceive some mental illnesses. The goal of the study was to find out if there are differences in the way that pre-nursing students stigmatize people with substance use disorders (alcohol and drug abuse) and eating disorders (anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa). Using an electronic data collection tool, 523 pre-nursing students were invited to take the Attitudes to Mental Illness Questionnaire (AMIQ) and respond to …

The Community Psychiatric Support Organization is a registered voluntary not for profit NGO in Uganda working to promote mental health by empowering the community to care for the mentally ill. Mental illness occurring in Uganda is often ‘explored’ or ‘explained’ from non-medical perspectives, including social, cultural, and/or religious belief systems. Over the last two years, the organization has conducted sixty six (66) live radio mental health education talks and twenty six (26) live television talk shows in an effort to reduce stigma towards mental illness. Such campaigns within developing contexts have not be examined extensively, although, in other sectors such …

Emergency Department (ED) Registered Nurses (RNs) spend significant time treating chronic pain patients. Chronic pain affects up to 100 million Americans (Simon, 2012) and as much as 30% of all opioid pain medications in the United States (US) are prescribed from EDs (Todd, Cowan, Kelly, & Homel, 2010). Abuse of these prescription drugs is America’s fastest growing drug problem (Paulozzi, Jones, Mack, & Rudd, 2011). For veterans of Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF), Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) and Operation New Dawn (OND), chronic non-cancer pain is the most frequent diagnosis (Higgins et al., 2014), and it is closely associated addiction disease. …
