The project addresses the lack of confidence and education among nurses in end-of-life care and pain management for cancer patients, specifically regarding ethical concerns related to hastening death. Nurses currently experience knowledge deficits in pain management and symptom control, which contributes to suboptimal care, ethical challenges, and inconsistent use of tools like RDOS and CPOT. The goal is to improve nursing confidence and their ability to efficiently manage pain and provide ethical treatment. By implementing the ELNEC training program, nurses will gain the skills necessary to assess and respond to symptoms of active death, ensuring proper care that reduces suffering. …

Background: Anxiety is one of the most prevalent symptoms oncology patients experience and clinical guidelines support the use of nonpharmacological interventions (NPI) as a primary method for managing anxiety.

Local Problem: At a suburban, community hospital, a nurse perception survey revealed staff were “always” offering medications 69% of the time but NPIs were “never” used anywhere between 38-81% of the time. In a sampling of patients, only 33% recalled they had used NPIs. A Patient Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) tool revealed that 69% of patients had higher than average levels of anxiety on the unit.

Nurse burnout is a pressing concern for healthcare with significant implications for all areas of nursing and patient outcomes. However, the specialty of oncology experiences burnout differently than other specialties for a multitude of reasons. This literature review aims to determine factors that contribute to nurse burnout within oncology, and identify evidence-based prevention strategies. The twenty studies included in the review underscore the crucial role of management and leadership in the prevention of nurse burnout.
