Effective International Medical Disaster Relief: A Qualitative Descriptive Study, Nicolette Broby, Jane H. Lassetter, Mary Williams, Blaine A. Winters

Purpose: The aim of this study was to assist organizations seeking to develop or improve their medical disaster relief effort by identifying fundamental elements and processes that permeate high-quality, international, medical disaster relief organizations and the teams they deploy.

Methods: A qualitative descriptive design was used. Data were gathered from interviews with key personnel at five international medical response organizations, as well as during field observations conducted at multiple sites in Jordan and Greece, including three refugee camps. Data were then reviewed by the research team and coded to identify patterns, categories, and themes.

The addition of Nurse Practitioners (NPs) on the trauma service at night was examined to see if it has positively impacted healthcare utilization and satisfaction in trauma patients. This four-month evidence-based, quasi-experimental project took place on the Trauma Medical Surgical Unit (TMSU) at a level II trauma center in California. Retrospective analysis of medical records and Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) satisfaction surveys were performed for those trauma patients located on the TMSU 60-days prior to NPs starting at night and 60-days after. Purpose: The overall purpose of this study was to describe the ONP role by exploring how and why NPs are utilized in orthopedic health care settings. Two problems associated with the evolving ONP role were addressed: the concomitant decrease in the supply of and increased demand for orthopedic patient care services and the nursing profession’s unmet challenge to keep pace with that increased demand and protection of the public and nursing profession through credentialing of ONPs and programs providing certification and training for ONPs.

Congestive Heart Failure (HF) is a chronic progressive cardiac disorder with high mortality rates and is the number one reason for hospital readmission in the United States. More than 5 million Americans live with HF with more than 900,000 new diagnoses annually. The likelihood of developing HF increases with age making it the most common primary diagnosis for patients over age 65. HF has a significant impact on quality of life, with depression being a common comorbid condition. Using a transformational leadership framework aligned with the Professional Practice Model (PPM): The Compass, a content outline was developed for the charge nurse's role. Clostridium difficile (C. difficile) is a life threatening bacteria spread in spore form through diarrhea. C. difficile effects approximately 500,000 people annually (CDC, 2016). From 2009-2016, the incidence rate of C. difficile in Minnesota* has increased from 50 to 227/1000,000 persons, with 58% of cases considered community associated** (CA), 17% healthcare facility onset (HCFO), and 25% community onset-HCFO (MDH, 2016). MDH 2016 data indicates C. difficile is being transmitted within healthcare and community settings and among patients primarily greater than 65 years of age, with 54% of CA cases using antibiotics during the 12 weeks prior to positive specimen (2016).
