Lost In Interpretation: The Lived Experience Of Nurse Interpreters In The Clinical Setting, Byron Batz
Lost In Interpretation: The Lived Experience Of Nurse Interpreters In The Clinical Setting, Byron Batz
Dissertations
The use of language interpreters in the health care setting constitutes a vital part of provider-patient communication but remains a relatively unexplored phenomenon. Registered nurses (RNs) are often called upon to serve as interpreters when linguistically diverse patients constitute a large segment of the patient population. That RNs serve simultaneously in an interpreter role – in addition to clinical and advocacy roles – is a complex facet of contemporary nursing practice in a diverse U.S. culture. The purpose of this qualitative descriptive study was to examine the lived experience of RNs serving as interpreters in health care institutions in Southern …
Chronic Pain, Sleep Disruption, And Work Performance In The Military, Jeffrey Ransom
Chronic Pain, Sleep Disruption, And Work Performance In The Military, Jeffrey Ransom
Dissertations
Abstract
Background and Significance: Managing pain is a challenge for many organizations, including the U.S. military. The added complication of managing sleep disruption compounds the issue. Examining pain and sleep disruption in the context of work performance within the military is critical to understanding the impact of these conditions on our nation’s fighting forces.
Purpose: Examine the associations of chronic pain and sleep disruption in the context of work performance among active duty military service members.
Research Aims: 1) Describe sociodemographic characteristics, military service characteristics, clinical characteristics, and work performance of active duty service members, 2) Examine relationships between these …
Patient Perception Of Fall Risk And High Fall Risk Screening Scores, Nicole D. Pena
Patient Perception Of Fall Risk And High Fall Risk Screening Scores, Nicole D. Pena
Dissertations
Purpose: The purpose of the study was to describe the relationship between patient
perception of fall risk and high fall risk screening scores.
Background: Despite mandated government regulations and multiple hospital
interventions, falls are the most prevalent adverse event among hospitalized patients and
are the leading driver of health care costs, amounting to over $30 billion each year with
projections to double by 2030. Recently, perception was identified as a major component
in preventing falls. A dearth of research examines the relationship between a patient’s
perceived risk for falls and standardized fall screening scores.
Methods: A descriptive correlational design with …

Tobacco smoking is the number one cause of preventable death in the US. It increases risk for cardiovascular and respiratory disease, diabetes, and many types of cancer. When contrasted with nonsmoking employees, smokers have a greater amount of lost productivity, as well as cost of health and life insurance claims due to illness. The purpose of this evidence-based project was to identify current smokers and monitor the consistency of their progression through the 5 A’s framework within an employee health clinic. Data was collected over two years and 600 charts were reviewed. After the data was analyzed, it was estimated …

Doctor of Nursing Practice Final Manuscripts
Abstract
The purpose of this evidence-based project was to implement a sustainable stress management program in a corporate setting, utilizing company stress management resources. A three-step program was initiated to include a 30-minute stress education session, followed by a 30-minute one-on-one session with a nurse practitioner student utilizing aspects of motivational interviewing to develop a goal oriented stress management plan. An individual one-month follow up was also performed. Of the 30 employees who attended the educational session, 15 signed up for a one-on-one session. Eight out of the 15 employees completed the one-month follow up. Employees completed a pre and …
Improving Postexposure Hiv Follow-Up In Healthcare Workers, Linda Valles Gutierrez
Improving Postexposure Hiv Follow-Up In Healthcare Workers, Linda Valles Gutierrez
Doctor of Nursing Practice Final Manuscripts
The purpose of this evidence-based practice (EBP) project is to improve the HIV postexposure follow-up (PEFU) rate in healthcare workers (HCWs) through implementation of a revised infection control policy and reminder system. Occupational exposure to HIV is a significant risk for all healthcare workers. In the United States every year, 1 out of 10 U.S. healthcare workers suffers a blood or body fluid exposure (BBFE). Transmission of one serious blood-borne infection can cost more than a million dollars for medications, follow-up laboratory testing, clinical evaluation, lost wages, and disability payments. Completion of HIV PEFU in HCWs is very low nationally. …

Diabetic Prevention The Hard Way: Modified Diet And Increased Exercise, Torrie Reese St.Julien
Doctor of Nursing Practice Final Manuscripts
Background and Purpose: In the United States, 79 million people are pre-diabetic: most have no symptoms. If left untreated, 37% will develop diabetes within 4 years. Fourteen percent of United States health care expenditures are related to diabetic complications. This Evidenced Based Project (EBP) involved a behavioral lifestyle change with the purpose of 7% weight loss and a minimum of 150 minutes of physical activity a week. It was also designed to reduce risk factors and glycated hemoglobin A1c (HgA1c) levels.
Methods: The interventional approach was modeled after the Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) and Group Lifestyle Balance Program. Participants were …
