Stronger Together: Exploring The Impact Of Peer Support Meetings On Stress And Burnout In Ambulatory Nurse Managers, Sara Wellman
DNP Projects
Background
Nurse manager (NM) burnout is common and leads to decreased staff productivity, departmental effectiveness, and leadership capacity. This results in decreased staff morale, poor conflict management, and ineffective communication. Stress reduction and resilience programs have been shown to reduce burnout and enhance resilience in NMs, but more focus needs to be directed toward NMs who work in ambulatory settings.
Purpose
The aim of this project was to evaluate the effectiveness of a peer-to-peer resilience intervention in reducing stress and burnout among ambulatory nurse managers.
Methods
This project used a pre-test/post-test survey design and a convenience sample of ambulatory NMs. …

Exploring The Relationship Between Burnout, Professional Fulfillment, And Individual And Organizational Factors In Nurse Managers Across Ambulatory And Inpatient Settings, Yulia Romazanova Lopez
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
Nurse managers play a vital role in the functioning and stability of healthcare systems, yet their well-being remains an underexplored area of research. The COVID-19 pandemic brought renewed attention to occupational burnout, including in nursing leadership, where nurse managers reported high levels of stress, emotional exhaustion, and organizational strain. While the literature on burnout has grown rapidly in recent years, there is limited research that addresses what comes next, what sustains nurse managers in their roles and how organizations might foster their long-term well-being and engagement. This dissertation compendium explores professional fulfillment (PF) as a proactive and constructive lens for …

Nursing
Background: Resilience in nurses enables them to use positive adaptive skills in coping with stress and helps them keep up with the stressful environment of their work settings and it was proven that resilience was the most significant positive factor contributing to work engagement. It is difficult to accomplish high-quality patient care without nurse work engagement (WE), and in the current complex healthcare environment, the engagement of the nursing workforce is essential for delivering quality patient care and overcoming current challenges in healthcare. Objective: Determine the effect of resilience training program for nurse interns on their work engagement at their …
A Qualitative Study On Nurse Facilitators Of Mind-Body Skills Groups, Paula D. Blake-Beckford
A Qualitative Study On Nurse Facilitators Of Mind-Body Skills Groups, Paula D. Blake-Beckford
Mindfulness Studies Theses
The Center for Mind-Body Medicine (CMBM), founded by Dr. James Gordon, provides communities with evidence-based Mind-Body Skills Groups (MBSGs) that foster self-care, self-awareness, and self-expression. MBSGs range from 8 to 12-week series on various mind-body practices wherein group members meet, practice, and reflect on the impact of mind-body skills in their lives. Research has demonstrated that participants in MBSGs have positive outcomes. Healthcare professionals (HCPs), especially nurses, gain resiliency from MBSGs. As facilitators of MBSGs, nurses develop essential skills transferable to clinical and educational settings. MBSGs are therapeutic for adult participants with chronic stress. Prior to this thesis, only one …

The Resilience Vaccine, Sara Horton-Deutch T. Duffy
Master's Projects and Capstones
Healthcare workers have been working in unprecedented circumstances since the declaration of the COVID-19 pandemic. Caregivers have been taxed with burnout. A large healthcare organization’s 26-bed, medical-surgical, telemetry, COVID-19 overflow unit was significantly impacted. Many healthcare organizations have adopted advocacy for attaining joy in work as an extra dimension of the Institute for Health Improvement’s Triple Aim. Adding this fourth aim supports averting caregiver burnout (CBO) while promoting joy in work.
This quality improvement project examined nurse leaders’ interventions that address CBO, promote healthy work environments, and promote joy in work. From June through August 2021, an 8-week resilience program …
Peer-To-Peer Emotional Support For Second Victims Of Hospital Adverse Events, Jessica L. Van Leuven
Peer-To-Peer Emotional Support For Second Victims Of Hospital Adverse Events, Jessica L. Van Leuven
Master's Projects and Capstones
Abstract
Problem: Psychological impact of trauma on healthcare workers is profound, and if left unaddressed can debilitate its victims, depress morale, and undermine safety culture. When adverse events occur and focus is placed on providing care and support to patients and their families, the emotional support needs of healthcare workers must also be acknowledged.
Context: Frontline workers in the oncology unit of the medical center that is the setting for this project experience emotional distress as “second victims” of adverse patient events. Close relationships develop between providers and patients during long-term treatments. When unanticipated or adverse patient events there can …
Leadership Strategies To Support Resilience, Katee Paine
Leadership Strategies To Support Resilience, Katee Paine
Nursing Masters Papers
Healthcare institutions have garnered national attention due to high levels of healthcare worker burnout, stress, and turnover rates. As the largest population of healthcare workers, nurses are often confronted with stressors that can lead to burnout in their practice and work environment. The global COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted and magnified these stressors over the past year, such as emotional strain of caring for dying patients, long shifts, rotating schedules, increased workload demands, and high-stress work environments. Resilience, characterized by an ability to bounce back from adverse situations, has been found to play an important role in navigating and adapting to …

Master's Projects and Capstones
Problem: The healthcare industry suffers from a high level of burnout and unhealthy work environments, which has been heightened by the COVID-19 pandemic. The consequences of burnout may be expressed in both individuals and teams as a lack of caring, disengagement, incivility, and staff turnover.
Context: One department in an integrated healthcare organization displayed a pattern of annual low employee engagement scores and alleged workplace bullying. Team members also observed that employees failed to speak up when experiencing incivility. The Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) student determined that an improvement initiative was needed to create a culture of caring to improve …
Effect Of A Self-Care And Self-Awareness Education Program On Resilience To Burnout And Depression In Clinically Experienced Nursing Students, Andrew Taylor
Undergraduate Honors Theses
The purpose was to examine the effect of a self-care educational intervention on nursing student resilience and thus the potential for compassion fatigue, depersonalization, burnout, depression, and inadequate self-care. A one-group pretest-posttest research design was applied to a convenience sample of 104 nursing students near the end of their last semester in a baccalaureate nursing program. The measurements were demographics, a psychometric resilience scale, program evaluation, and reflection question. The intervention was a standardized, intensive 30 min training program on the high degree of stress and burnout nurses face and the core self-care methods that can promote resilience to these …
The Impact Of A Digital Intervention On Perceived Stress, Resiliency, Social Support, And Intention To Leave Among Newly Licensed Nurses: A Randomized Controlled Trial, Lisa Concilio
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The nursing shortage has been deemed a public health crisis with the turnover rate of newly licensed nurses (NLNs) growing (Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, 2014). One out of five NLNs are leaving the profession due to work dissatisfaction and feelings of inadequacy (National Academy of Medicine, 2017). NLN attrition during the first year of hire has been associated with feelings of overwhelming stress and decreased sense of support which negatively impact patient safety (Spence Laschinger et al., 2016). As seasoned nurses are attempting to retire amidst a nursing shortage (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2018), NLNs require more support …

Developing Resilience Training For The Healthcare Employee In A Rural Medical Center, Sandra E. Gothard
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In the clinical setting and in their personal lives, health professionals are confronted with many stressors that impact their time and the clarity of their role. Stressors are emotional, moral, or spiritual in nature as a result of exposure to suffering and death. There are often occupational stressors, such as reduced social support, excessive workload, or a prolonged misalignment among personal needs, individual values, and the work role. As a result of these challenges, health care employees need to create coping skills when stressors and demands become hindrances to personal well-being and their professional ability to care for others. Developing …

Aligning Theory And Evidence-Based Practices To Enhance Human Flourishing In Nurse Executives, Jim D'Alfonso
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects
Today’s nurse executives lead highly complex and bureaucratic organizations undergoing sweeping reform at an unprecedented rate of change. Change and high levels of stress are the norm in health care, and ineffective stress management can hinder organizational performance and adversely impact personal wellbeing. The risks of nurse executive burnout and unprecedented turnover led to the development of a 4-hour program to teach theory-guided and evidence-based stress management techniques. The program was intended to increase awareness, enhance effective stress management skills, and improve the nurse executive’s ability to flourish in high stress environments. A pre-intervention and 6-month post-intervention assessment (n …

Flight Nurses’ Narratives Of Traumatic Patient Care Events: Why Do They Stay?, Joanne Booth Newton
Graduate Dissertations and Theses
As frontline providers of care, flight nurses are continuously exposed to traumatic patient care events; they are, accordingly, highly vulnerable to the injurious effects of compassion fatigue. Flight nursing is an exclusive nursing specialty in which highly trained registered nurses provide comprehensive pre-hospital, emergency, and critical care to patients with urgent or life-threatening conditions aboard helicopter or fixed wing aircraft or, when necessary due to unfavorable weather conditions, by ground ambulance. The purpose of this study was to explore the lived experiences of five flight nurses; to better understand the factors they perceived to be contributors or barriers to compassion …
Resilience As Resistance To The New Managerialism: Portraits That Reframe Nursing Through Quotes From The Field, Vicki Cope, Bronwyn Jones, Joyce Hendricks
Resilience As Resistance To The New Managerialism: Portraits That Reframe Nursing Through Quotes From The Field, Vicki Cope, Bronwyn Jones, Joyce Hendricks
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Aim:
This paper acknowledges the relationship between resilience and the new managerialism of contemporary nursing.
Methods:
Qualitative portraiture methodology.
Discussion:
The new managerialism in hospital settings results in a rapidly increasing turnover of acutely ill or comorbid patients, which directly relates to retention and quality service. In education settings, the management imperative to recruit more students into the profession combined with financial cutbacks leads to similar tensions. In aged care the trend equates care directly with funding, with the same effect. Yet despite this, many registered nurses remain working. Portraiture explored 'why' nurses remain in workplaces often described as awful. …
