Nurse Leader Burnout: Exploring Ways To Improve Wellness And Resilience, Kimberly Leger Kenney
DNP Scholarly Projects
BACKGROUND: Burnout among nurse leaders is a growing concern, driven by increasing workload, operational demands, and challenges with work-life balance. Addressing burnout is critical to maintaining stability within the leadership team and to delivering high-quality patient care.
LOCAL PROBLEM: Prior to the development of the QI proposal, engagement survey results showed scores 0.11 points below the benchmark in leadership responsiveness, and more than 50 nurse leader positions have turned over in the past 5 years. The specific aims of this project include: 1. 75% of nurse leaders report that they would implement an activity from the toolkit. 2. Fewer than …

DNP Projects
Abstract
Background and Purpose: Nursing leaders across the United States are seeking to recruit and retain new graduate nurses as a national nursing shortage widens at an alarming pace. Healthcare systems are tasked to strengthen the skill set of novice nurses as they seek to meet the care needs of acutely ill patients and rebuild a skilled workforce for future years. This study evaluated the impact of a four-part mentorship series for novice nurses on perceived strengths in competency, communication, wellbeing, and teamwork.
Methods: In this quality improvement project with pre-intervention/post-intervention assessment, a sample (n=14) of medical surgical nurses with …
Nurse Management Competency Training For Frontline Nurse Leaders, Travis Drake
Nurse Management Competency Training For Frontline Nurse Leaders, Travis Drake
DNP Projects
Background: Growing evidence shows that front line nurse leaders take on their role with minimal education and training. Healthcare facilities are pressed for resources and time to allow for proper development of these leaders.
Purpose: The purpose of this project was to provide novice nurse leaders with a condensed management development program utilizing key American Organization of Nurse Leaders (AONL) nurse manager competencies. This abbreviated program was developed focusing on three key competencies of finance, innovation, and human resources. The impact of the program was measured by comparing self-assessment prior to any of the education and after the entire program …
The Relationship Between Job Challenge And Leadership Aspiration From The Perspective Of The Entry Level Nurse Leader, Rose M. Johnson
The Relationship Between Job Challenge And Leadership Aspiration From The Perspective Of The Entry Level Nurse Leader, Rose M. Johnson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
While the nurse leader plays an important and integral role in the success of healthcare organizations, the nurse leader pipeline has experienced a troubling and downward trajectory for several years. The lack of leadership aspiration among direct care nurses has been noted as one of several reasons for the downward trajectory. In addition, researchers identified the lack of understanding of perspectives of the various nurse leader roles and the lack of understanding of the effectiveness of experiential learning in the nurse leader role as potential contributions to the problem. The purpose of this quantitative, correlational research was to examine the …

Developing Influential Nurse Leaders: Utilizing Strengths And Styles Assessments To Create Individualized, Intentional Coaching, Linda Shepherd
Doctors of Nursing Practice (DNP) Final Projects, 2020-current
Abstract
Background: A north-central Virginia university and a hospital in the British West Indies (BWI) entered a collaborative agreement in 2020. Growing competitive environments heightened awareness and urgency in creating expansively competent, influential nurse leaders in the BWI. Without formalized data to quantify or validate nurse manager strengths, leadership style, or competencies, an assessment of these items and an evidence-based coaching intervention were performed.
Methods: The population for this evidence-based (EB) practice project was 20 inpatient nurse leaders. The Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ) and the Clifton Strength Finders Assessment (CSF) for Managers were deployed as pre-intervention assessment tools. …
A Nurse Leader Residency Program: Improving Leadership Competencies, Melanie Stanton
A Nurse Leader Residency Program: Improving Leadership Competencies, Melanie Stanton
Epsilon Sigma at-Large Research Conference
Ballad Health nurse leaders received little nursing leadership education or competency development before beginning their leadership roles; yet they are crucial to improve quality, safety, cost, patient experience, and team member engagement. Competency development is linked to improved nurse leader confidence, job satisfaction, and retention. Additionally, the organization is experiencing a shortage of prepared internal candidates to fill vacant nurse manager positions. The organization’s Chief Nursing Council (CNC) questioned if a leadership development program could improve new and aspiring nurse managers' leadership competency. The CNC aimed to improve nurse leader competency by implementing and measuring the effectiveness of an evidence-based …
Bullying In The C-Suite: A Nurse Leader Perspective, Kimberly Ann Colonnelli
Bullying In The C-Suite: A Nurse Leader Perspective, Kimberly Ann Colonnelli
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects
An estimated 35% of American workers have experienced bullying, and in 80% of those situations, the perpetrator was a supervisor or boss. 1 However, the reality is that bullying can come from anyone in the workplace, including subordinates. Victims are generally well liked and good performers, making them feel like threats to a bully’s power base. Bullying, unlike harassment, is not a legally defined behavior, so no laws currently exist to punish it. Victims are, therefore, at the mercy of their bosses, supervisors, co-workers, and human resource departments for protection or relief. Bullying is not a singular event, but rather …
Nurse Leader Rounding: A Stellar Strategy To Improve The Patient Experience Of Care In The Emergency Department, Polina Shishkina
Nurse Leader Rounding: A Stellar Strategy To Improve The Patient Experience Of Care In The Emergency Department, Polina Shishkina
Master's Projects and Capstones
Abstract
Many clinical outcomes that occur in the emergency room determine the patient’s continued care and experience in the hospital and beyond as well as influence the organizational reputation in the community. Mack and Fill emphasize that “an ED visit is a significant encounter between a patient and a hospital and one that affects ‘repurchase’ decisions for future health care” (as cited in Welch, 2010, p. 65). Thus, patient experience in the emergency department necessitates continued quality improvement efforts. The emergency room, or “the front door to the hospital”, provides equitable and affordable care to patients who need urgent medical …

Frontline Focus: A Nurse Manager's Employee Engagement Toolkit, Christen Straw
Frontline Focus: A Nurse Manager's Employee Engagement Toolkit, Christen Straw
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects
Abstract
Average hospital turnover rates in the US reached 18.2% in 2017. Turnover rates for registered nurses (RNs) were also at an all-time high of 16.8%. RN turnover can cost up to $61,100 per nurse resulting in the average hospital loss of $5.7 million per year (NSI, 2018). Employee engagement and job satisfaction levels are predictors of nursing turnover and patient outcomes and should be a top priority for nurse leaders. A disengaged workforce not only affects team morale and organizational spending, but it also impacts the quality of patient care. Multiple studies suggest that employee engagement is the number …
Transformational Leadership In Nursing: A Pilot Nurse Leader Development Program, Audria G. Denker
Transformational Leadership In Nursing: A Pilot Nurse Leader Development Program, Audria G. Denker
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Capstones
Current research reveals that staff nurses are routinely placed into front-line leadership roles with little formal preparation. The purpose of this project was the development, implementation, and evaluation of a pilot nurse leader development program for nurse leaders at a small community hospital located in Clarksville, Indiana. This study consisted of a quasi-experimental design, with the intervention consisting of a leadership course delivered to a convenience sample of nurses in managerial positions. Leadership attributes was quantified, both pre/post interventions, through the administration of the Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI), a Likert-scaled survey. The LPI was administered to the nurse leaders, their …
