Evaluation And Continuation Of Oncology Nurse Mentorship Program, Gurpreet K. Kang
Evaluation And Continuation Of Oncology Nurse Mentorship Program, Gurpreet K. Kang
Master's Projects and Capstones
Problem: Newly hired nurses on a busy inpatient leukemia and lymphoma subspeciality unit experienced challenges after transitioning into specialty oncology practice. This resulted in decreased confidence, increased risk of medication errors, and a 40% unit-based annual turnover rate. The cost of replacing one staff nurse is $61,000. Exit interviews determined root causes of turnover rates, nurse confidence.
Context: A quality improvement program was envisioned to optimize patient and organizational outcomes on a 25-bed inpatient unit to evaluate and sustain an oncology nurse mentorship program.
Interventions: Over one year, cohort 1 (n=8) and follow up 2nd cohort (n=7) was implemented …

Implementation Of A Standardized Onboarding Program, Sarah J. Wall
Doctor of Nursing Practice Final Project Abstract
Purpose: To evaluate the impact of a standardized onboarding program on Advanced Practice Provider (APP) retention and productivity within an academic department.
Background: High APP turnover in specialized settings disrupts care and leads to financial losses. Previously, onboarding lacked structure, leading to early attrition and delayed productivity. A 24-week phased, competency-based orientation program was developed to improve retention, job satisfaction, and clinical performance.
Methods: The program, implemented in April 2024, included clinical precepting, didactic modules, and mentorship. Retention and Relative Value Units (RVUs) were measured before and after implementation. Qualitative data was collected through mentorship surveys and APP focus groups. …

High turnover rates contribute to staff shortages, increased workload, burnout, and a decline in patient care quality. Nurse retention can be incredibly costly, and it is estimated to cost $56,300 per every RN who leaves their job. For the average hospital, this can equate to roughly $3.9 to $5.8 million in losses per year.” (2024 NSI National Healthcare Retention and RN Staffing Report). Our initiative focuses on implementing a structured mentorship program for new graduate nurses at Vanderbilt’s 6 East Med-Surg unit. By pairing new nurses with experienced mentors, the program aims to improve job satisfaction, provide professional …

Problem
Retention of advanced practice providers (APPs) is needed for ongoing high quality comprehensive care. Administrators at a large urban pediatric institute in the Midwest identified turnover and retention as an issue for APPs in the first one to two years of service. Even in years when turnover rates were not as high, the greatest number of APPs leaving the institution where those in their first five years of tenure. Without strategies aimed at improving transition to practice, new hire APPs will continue to be unprepared for their new role, therefore endangering job satisfaction, leading to continued turnover, and threatening …

DNP Projects
Abstract
Background and Purpose: Nursing leaders across the United States are seeking to recruit and retain new graduate nurses as a national nursing shortage widens at an alarming pace. Healthcare systems are tasked to strengthen the skill set of novice nurses as they seek to meet the care needs of acutely ill patients and rebuild a skilled workforce for future years. This study evaluated the impact of a four-part mentorship series for novice nurses on perceived strengths in competency, communication, wellbeing, and teamwork.
Methods: In this quality improvement project with pre-intervention/post-intervention assessment, a sample (n=14) of medical surgical nurses with …
Mentoring Minority Nursing Students, Justin Morris
Mentoring Minority Nursing Students, Justin Morris
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Capstones
Throughout the pandemic, there was a spotlight on the problems with nursing satisfaction and retention. However, minority nurses, a sub-population of nurses, were hidden in the shadows. To create change to this disparity we need to start in the academic world, as these students feel more pressure to succeed due to outside stressors (Osakwe, et al., 2022). The mentorship intervention has been long studied and has shown great promise to improve academic status, nurse retention, and nurse satisfaction. This evidence-based practice (EBP) project aimed to 1) combat the disparity in minority nursing students’ professional support needs through quality mentorship and …

Nursing Masters Papers
Healthcare institutions have garnered national attention due to high levels of healthcare worker burnout, stress, and turnover rates. As the largest population of healthcare workers, nurses are often confronted with stressors that can lead to burnout in their practice and work environment. The global COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted and magnified these stressors over the past year, such as emotional strain of caring for dying patients, long shifts, rotating schedules, increased workload demands, and high-stress work environments. Resilience, characterized by an ability to bounce back from adverse situations, has been found to play an important role in navigating and adapting to …

Official Mentor Program Benchmark Project, Gabriela O'Hara
MSN Capstone Projects
Nursing shortage, turnover, and low job satisfaction are constant issues that often trouble healthcare organizations. These issues have led organizations to implement programs, such as externship, internship, and preceptor programs to strengthen new nurses’ professional practice and skills. However, these issues continue to be organizational challenges. Considering the need for new nurses to have a supportive foundation for their career and to further encourage workplace satisfaction and retention, the following PICOT question was developed: In a healthcare organization, how does an official mentor program, compared with not having a mentor program, influence nursing retention and nursing job satisfaction over 2 …

Journal of Excellence in Nursing and Healthcare Practice
Nurse managers (NMs) play a vital role in patient outcomes by providing a stable work environment for teams. Numerous factors influence a NM’s job satisfaction and intent to remain in a job. The purpose of this project was to develop an evidence-based formal mentorship program for NMs in an effort to impact retention rates. A secondary purpose was to evaluate the impact that a formal mentorship program has on NMs’ job satisfaction and intent to stay. Across two hospitals in the Pacific Northwest, 15 NMs participated in a 6-month mentorship program. The program was guided by both the mentorship enactment …

Mentorship Through Storytelling Program, Debra Marie Perry
Theses and Graduate Projects
The Mentorship Through Storytelling Program began in response to an urgent need to reduce registered nurse (RN) turnover rates and improve nurses’ satisfaction on a medical surgical unit in a Midwestern Hospital. The unit was challenged to hire, integrate, and retain a multigenerational team of RNs. Guided by Jean Watson’s Theory of Human Caring, the Mentorship Through Storytelling Program was initiated in the fall of 2018 after doing a broad literature review and adapting the Academy of Medical Surgical Nurses’ Mentorship Program to include the concepts of storytelling, mentoring, and caring. Digital recordings of five expert nurses’ oral histories (stories) …

Development Of A Formalized Mentorship Program, Rozlyn Bauer
Master's Projects and Capstones
The purpose of this project is to help increase retention of newly licensed registered nurses (NLRN) at a large community medical center. The medical center loses approximately 20 NLRNs per year which is costly for the medical center. The loss of NLRN can be attributed to decreased job satisfaction, poor nursing competence and lateral violence between the nursing staff. Evidence shows that mentorship is a proven, evidence-based approach to solving these issues and more (Hodgson & Scanlan, 2013).
Not only can mentorship help increase retention, address lateral violence, increase job satisfaction and nursing competence but, it can also help enhance …
