Purpose (What): This project aims to describe how transformational leadership by an ICU nurse leader led to the creation of the clinical coach program. This program supports and retains newly graduated nurses and experienced nurses transitioning into the ICU through collaboration with experienced preceptors.

Relevance/Significance (Why): In 2022, hospital leadership charged the ICU nurse manager with stabilizing the ICU workforce by reducing the reliance on costly temporary travel staff, a priority due to turnover during the COVID pandemic. Background

Nurse leaders report low confidence navigating ethical dilemmas. Ethical dilemmas arise when ethical values are challenged, causing uncertainty about how to proceed. Left unresolved, ethical dilemmas impact ethical decision-making and can lead to moral distress. Moral distress is the anguish that occurs when there is recognition of an ethical dilemma necessitating a professional obligation to act, yet barriers exist to taking the ethically correct course of action.

Background:

Healthcare operations are estimated to generate up to 29lbs of waste per patient per day (Practice Greenhealth, 2022). Waste contributes significantly to healthcare’s carbon emissions, which in turn contributes to the growing climate crisis (Karliner et al., 2019, Healthcare Without Harm, 2019; World Health Organization, 2018). Diverting recyclable waste from healthcare operations will reduce healthcare’s total waste to landfill and waste related carbon emissions.

Background:

In one region including 4 hospitals, acute care nurses historically met with professional development practitioners (PDP) and received binders containing printed, specialty-specific policies and a competency checklist (required to be signed and returned to the nurse leader) upon new hire or transfer. Creating physical orientation packets is costly, time-consuming, and restricts the ability to share appropriate orientation materials in the event of a PDP sick call. Real-time communication between the orientee, preceptor, PDP, and nurse leader regarding status of the competency checklist cannot occur with a physical binder. Providing electronic onboarding materials is a potential solution.

Leadership is critical to the success of most organizations, and the achievement of an organization's goals is largely dependent on the leaders' ability to engage, motivate, and influence their teams—often referred to as Transformational Leadership. This is especially true for healthcare organizations wherein the morbidity and mortality of patients may be affected by the quality of leadership. At the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, in-person meetings transitioned to the online format without nurse leaders' formal training. Background/Intro:

Nursing leaders at acute care hospitals often lack knowledge of how best to support nurses who wish to engage in nursing research and evidence-based practice. Inclusion of the nurses who have direct bedside contact with patients is integral in improving patient outcomes.

Problem Description-Patient facing nurses have cited a lack of leadership support in conducting research. A lack of research knowledge by nursing leaders has also previously been identified. I determined to learn other barriers nursing leaders would identify and if a brief module on basics of nursing research might mitigate these barriers.
