Objective: The objective of this study was to obtain NICU nurses’ suggestions for improving obstacles in EOL care in NICUs.
Methods: Suggestions were obtained through mailed survey research in qualitative study design. Returned surveys yielded 121 nurse respondents who gave a total of 138 suggestions.
Results: A total of 10 cohesive themes were identified: (1) environmental design issues, (2) improved communication between …
An Exploration Of Nicu Nursing Staff Perspective On The Change From Pod To Private Room Patient Care, Julie Nickles
An Exploration Of Nicu Nursing Staff Perspective On The Change From Pod To Private Room Patient Care, Julie Nickles
Dissertations
Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU) are designed to care for critically ill newborns who require constant care. The design of the NICU may have an impact on not only the patient and their family but also the nursing staff. Historically neonatal intensive care have employed a cohort model of care. In this model multiple infants are in the same room or pod. With success of single room maternity care, the increased need for changes in neonatal care became apparent. Today, new parents desire extended contact with their extremely preterm and often very sick infant. This trend has led a standard …

Discharge Readiness For Families With A Premature Infant Living In Appalachia, Kathy Zimmerman
Discharge Readiness For Families With A Premature Infant Living In Appalachia, Kathy Zimmerman
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
With increased advances in technology, the overall survival rates in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for premature infants at lower gestational ages, has also increased. Although premature infants survive at lower gestational ages, they are often discharged to home with unresolved medical issues. While the birth of a new baby for parents is a joyous occasion, they often have difficulty coping and transitioning into a parental role. Premature infants also have ongoing complications such as difficulty with feeding, developmental delays in growth, and long-term eye and respiratory complications. As a result of chronic health sequelae, premature infants require extensive …

Midline Catheter Usage In The Neonatal Population, Kelly Freeland
Midline Catheter Usage In The Neonatal Population, Kelly Freeland
Master's Projects and Capstones
Neonatal sepsis is associated with increased mortality and morbidities including lengthy hospital stays. Neonate’s immature immune system and susceptibility to sepsis make them prone to antibiotic treatment. Lack of recommendations points to the need for evidence-based practices when selecting a vascular access device (VAD). Literature reviewed demonstrated that a midline catheter (MC) was an option for a VAD with neonatal populations requiring antibiotic therapy more than 48 hours. MCs offer fewer complications compared to the peripheral intravenous (PIV) device. The objective of this project is to reduce the amount of pain experienced by neonates by reducing the number of PIV …
Infection Control: Reducing Hospital Acquired Central Line Bloodstream Infections, Bobbie Joy Hollins
Infection Control: Reducing Hospital Acquired Central Line Bloodstream Infections, Bobbie Joy Hollins
Master's Projects and Capstones
Hospital-acquired infections are a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in neonatal intensive care units (Ceballos, Waterman, Hulett, & Makic, 2013). It’s estimated that each neonatal bloodstream infection costs about $35,000 and adds about two weeks to a baby’s hospital stay (Akron's Children Hospital, 2015). This project was formulated to reduce the incidence of central line blood stream infections in the neonatal population. The setting used for this project was a 40 bed Level III Neonatal ICU. The methods executed include: conducting a root-cause analysis and formulating a unit survey. Kurt Lewin’s Three-Step Change Model was also used to complete …
Safe Sleep In The Nicu Environment For Sids Prevention, Renee J. Aumua
Safe Sleep In The Nicu Environment For Sids Prevention, Renee J. Aumua
Master's Projects and Capstones
Abstract
Sudden Infant Death Syndrome(SIDS) remains a leading cause of death for infants less than one year of age. Historically, Neonatal Intensive Care units have been exempt from following SIDS safe sleep guidelines recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics(AAP) for SIDS prevention due to patient medical status and environment. However, in 2011 these guidelines were updated by the AAP to include NICU specific recommendations. This is a very important change due to this patient population being at a higher risk for SIDS than the term, well newborn. The Safe Sleep project was conducted in a 35 bed, tertiary care …
Developing Morally Sensitive Policy In The Nicu: Donation After Circulatory Determination Of Death, Michael Van Manen, Nicole Kain
Developing Morally Sensitive Policy In The Nicu: Donation After Circulatory Determination Of Death, Michael Van Manen, Nicole Kain
The Qualitative Report
Policy development is an important activity for the practice of healthcare. Policies, after all, may cultivate common practices and ensure that best available evidence is employed in clinical decision making. Qualitative research and individuals with expertise in qualitative research methods have much to offer policy makers. We were confronted with the situation of developing policy for donation after circulatory death (DCD) for our newborn intensive care program. Due the moral-ethical complexities surrounding DCD, and the limited experience with DCD in this context, we approached policy development from an iterative design perspective employing qualitative methods. We describe our experience in employing …

Interventions To Reduce The Effects Of Nicu Noise In Preterm Neonates, Rebecca L. Manske
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Exposure to excessive noise during a neonates stay in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) can create both immediate and long term health problems such as, hearing loss, neurological deficits, and sleep pattern disturbances. The use of earmuffs or earplugs to decrease the neonate’s exposure to noise can create a more stable environment to facilitate improved growth and development. The purpose of this research was to examine the use of earmuffs or earplugs to reduce the impact of noise on neonates. A systematic review of literature was conducted using online databases including CINAHL, ERIC, Ebsco Host, Medline, and PsychINFO. The …
