Enhancing Postpartum Depression Screening Tools To Improve Maternal Mental Health Outcomes: A Quality Improvement Initiative, Jillian Squires
Enhancing Postpartum Depression Screening Tools To Improve Maternal Mental Health Outcomes: A Quality Improvement Initiative, Jillian Squires
Master's Theses and Capstones
Abstract
BACKGROUND:
Postpartum depression (PPD) is a prevalent and serious condition affecting new mothers, often underdiagnosed due to challenges in traditional screening methods. Early detection and intervention are crucial for improving maternal and infant health outcomes.
LOCAL PROBLEM:
On the maternity unit, existing PPD screening processes were insufficient, with significant barriers including patient reluctance to disclose mental health concerns, leading to missed or inadequately addressed PPD cases.
METHODS:
This quality improvement (QI) project utilized the Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) framework. Pre-intervention surveys were conducted to identify current challenges and perceptions. An at-home PPD screening tool using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) …

An Educational Intervention To Improve Neonatal Icu Nurses’ Breastfeeding Support Knowledge, Self-Efficacy, And Breastfeeding Rates At Discharge, Sarah Money
DNP Projects
Background: The benefits of breastfeeding for both mother and baby are known. It is recommended that all infants be exclusively breastfed until six months (Meek & Noble, 2022; North et al., 2021). Despite this, breastfeeding rates remain low, especially in medically fragile infants requiring care in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) (Rollins et al., 2016). Receipt of evidence-based breastfeeding support by healthcare providers has been shown to improve breastfeeding success; however, many healthcare providers report not being comfortable or knowledgeable enough to offer support consistently (Mulcahy et al., 2022; Rollins et al., 2016).
Purpose: This study aims …

Recognizing Risk Factors Of Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia In Neonates ≥ 24 And ≤ 32 Weeks Of Gestational Age, Hannah Tatro
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Background: Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) is a chronic lung condition that is diagnosed among neonates who are on oxygen therapy for longer than 28 days. BPD causes insufficient gas exchange due to prematurely developed lungs and is the most common condition that causes morbidity of prematurity. Many risk factors contribute to the development of this condition and relate to care from the delivery room to the first few days of life.
Purpose: The purpose of this literature review is to examine risk factors related to the development of BPD in neonates from the gestational ages of 24 to 32 weeks.

Using Education To Confidently Identify And Report Concerns Of Child Abuse And Neglect: A Qualitative Improvement Initiative Through Staff Development, Sarah E. Neilson
Master's Theses and Capstones
BACKGROUND: Pre-licensure education on child abuse and neglect is crucial for nurses in the healthcare field. It helps to equip them with the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively identify, report, and intervene in cases of child abuse and neglect. Having this education available and understanding the signs and effects of child abuse and neglect, empowers nurses to take quick and decisive action in early intervention and prevention. Within the microsystem of a local Operating Room (OR), this quality improvement (QI) project will determine the muchneeded addition to the healthcare curriculum.
METHODS: The Plan, Do, Study, Act (PDSA) framework was …
Improving Postpartum Depression Education Within The Microsystem, Mackenzie A. Sturdevant
Improving Postpartum Depression Education Within The Microsystem, Mackenzie A. Sturdevant
Master's Theses and Capstones
BACKGROUND: Postpartum depression (PPD) is a significant mental health issue affecting a substantial percentage of new mothers, ranging from "baby blues" to severe forms like postpartum psychosis. Maternity nurses play a crucial role in early detection and education due to the gap in postpartum care follow-up appointments, which can delay necessary interventions.
LOCAL PROBLEM: Despite the critical role of maternity nurses, there is variability in their preparedness to educate and support patients regarding PPD during the immediate postpartum period. This study aims to enhance maternity nurses' knowledge and confidence in providing PPD education through a quality improvement (QI) project within …
Improving The Postpartum Depression Discharge Education To Increase Quality And Safety Of Care: A Quality Improvement Initiative, Amanda Lucia
Master's Theses and Capstones
Background: Postpartum depression (PPD) is the most prevalent psychological condition to affect mothers following childbirth which can have detrimental consequences on the physical and mental health of the mother, child, and spouse (Wang et al., 2021). Globally, postpartum depression affects 17.2% of the world population, and in the United States 1 in 8 women who recently gave birth reported symptoms of PPD, and 1 in 10 women reported experiencing a major depressive episode within a year following delivery (CDC, 2023). Patients’ spouses and family members are in a unique position to identify early manifestations of PPD which can lead to …

OBJECTIVES AND METHODS: We analyzed upper endoscopic and histological findings in 3 cohorts of children undergoing upper gastrointestinal endoscopy over a 10-year period. Five hundred seventy-nine patients were identified, with 244 (42%), 199 (35%), and 136 (23%) in the 2011, 2015, and 2019 cohorts, respectively. The most common symptoms and signs were abdominal pain, vomiting, failure to thrive, and diarrhea.
RESULTS: The number of patients who had histological evidence of chronic gastritis increased from 2011 (n = 70, 29%) to 2015 (n = 106, 53%) and 2019 (n = 92, 68%;
CONCLUSIONS: There has been a significant rise in the …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Background: Although many mothers initiate breastfeeding, supplementation with human-milk substitutes (formula) during the birth hospitalization is common and has been associated with early breastfeeding cessation. Colostrum hand expressed in the last few weeks before birth, known as antenatal colostrum expression (ACE), can be used instead of human-milk substitutes. However, evidence is lacking on the efficacy of ACE on breastfeeding outcomes and in non-diabetic mothers. Methods and Planned Analysis: This multicenter stepped-wedge cluster (nested) randomized controlled trial aims to recruit 945 nulliparous pregnant individuals. The trial is conducted in two phases. During Phase 1, control group participants are under standard care. …

Does Intrauterine Exposure To Diabetes Impact Mental And Motor Skills? A Meta-Analysis Of The Bayley Scales Of Infant Development, Diana Arabiat, Mahammad Al Jabery, Lisa Whitehead
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Background: Attempts to conduct meta-analyses of the association between child development and diabetes have been limited by the wide range of tools and definitions of developmental outcomes used in the literature. We aim to meta-analyze a widely used measure of child development, the Bayley Scales of Infant Development, with respect to exposure to diabetes and developmental scores. Methods: PsycINFO, MEDLINE/PubMed, EMBASE, Emcare, and Google Scholar databases were searched. Two independent reviewers screened, extracted, and quality-appraised the studies using JBI SUMARI software. Forest plots were created with the standardized mean difference using the random-effects model, and heterogeneity was assessed using I2. …
