Standardizing Assessment And Management Of Ankyloglossia, Marcia Nicole Cowen
Standardizing Assessment And Management Of Ankyloglossia, Marcia Nicole Cowen
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects
Ankyloglossia, which is characterized by a short, tight or thick lingual frenulum, can negatively impact breastfeeding. It has been recognized as a problem for centuries. Frenotomies have traditionally been performed to remove the lingual frenulum when indicated. The use of frenotomies and a focus on ankyloglossia fell out of favor in the twentieth century with renewed attention in the past several decades. Limited high-quality studies have been undertaken on ankyloglossia. There remains no standardized diagnosis or management recommendations. In efforts to promote a standardized approach that is based on current knowledge, this study will involve an educational in-service on ankyloglossia, …

Lucy Mueller Wiesemann, DNP, CNM, APN, CLS; DePaul University, Chicago, IL
Abstract
Introduction: Breastsleeping, defined as cosleeping while breastfeeding, is a practice commonly employed in breastfeeding families. However, literature examining this concept, its prevalence, and related education for safe breastsleeping is scant. Provider’s attitudes surrounding breastsleeping play an essential role in practice and outcomes when caring for breastfeeding patients and families. The purpose of the study was to examine Certified Nurse-Midwives’ attitudes and beliefs surrounding breastsleeping.
Methods: An adapted 18-item Nurse Attitudes and …

Eating For Two Without Eating Too Much: Optimizing Gestational Weight Gain, Sandra Pope
Doctor of Nursing Practice Final Manuscripts
This evidence-based pilot project was implemented to optimize gestational weight gain (GWG) among women enrolled for prenatal care at a private practice. Evidence from meta-analyses and large studies show: 1) an association between excess GWG and increased risk of fetal macrosomia and increased cesarean delivery; 2) 66% of women do not know their healthy GWG target; 3) a 20% reduction in excess GWG in women receiving diet or exercise interventions or both. In addition, visual plotting of weight gain has helped overweight adults reduce and maintain weight loss over a one-year period. Nutrition assessment using a validated nutritional screening questionnaire …

Lowering Antibiotic Resistance Utilizing Breastmilk, Moriah J. Harris
Honors College Theses
Antibiotic resistance is considered an emerging crisis in the healthcare world. This crisis has the potential to cause many bacterial diseases that cannot be cured using antibiotic drugs, which can lead to serious infections and death. There have been numerous studies that have found that sugars, proteins and protein-lipid complexes in breastmilk have antimicrobial properties. It has been proposed that these properties in breastmilk can help solve the antibacterial resistance crisis. This research project involved studying antibiotic resistance and how breastmilk can help solve this increasingly prevalent problem.
The implementation step of this research project involved a PowerPoint presentation detailing …
Determining The Knowledge And Practices Of Obstetrics Healthcare Professionals Regarding Maternal Intrapartum Pertussis Vaccination Administration, Kristie Mattix
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Project
Pertussis is a contagious respiratory disease that can occur in all age groups. Signs and symptoms of pertussis, however, are worse in infants and young children; likewise, the rates of severe cases, hospitalizations, and deaths are higher in this group as well. Vaccination against pertussis is the most effective way to combat this illness. In the last 15 years, there have been a number of changes in the recommendations regarding vaccination against pertussis. In order for these recommendations to be followed, healthcare professionals must be aware of the guidelines as well as be knowledgeable about the condition they are trying …

The Academic Center for Evidence-Based (ACE) Practice Star Model guided this EBP project with evidence-based interventions developed after a comprehensive literature search. Implementation of …
Family-Centered Care In The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Madison Winter
Family-Centered Care In The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Madison Winter
The Eleanor Mann School of Nursing Undergraduate Honors Theses
Family-centered care can be useful in any clinical scenario, but more so in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Having a preterm infant admitted into the NICU is not an ideal situation, and can cause high levels of apprehension for the parents. “Stress experienced by parents whose infant is hospitalized in the NICU is strongly correlated with anxiety, fatigue, depression, and sleep disruption” (Busse et al., 2013). The Benefit Of Neonatal Intensive Care Units Providing A Specialized Program For Newborns In Drug Withdraw, Jessie Creekmore
The Benefit Of Neonatal Intensive Care Units Providing A Specialized Program For Newborns In Drug Withdraw, Jessie Creekmore
Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects
Hospitals across America have intensive care units dedicated to neonates who are born with a wide variety of issues, with the hope that specialized care will promote healthy growth so the newborn can return home with its family. Unfortunately, the majority of the country is seeing an increase in neonates being born with drugs in their system from their mother’s dependency during pregnancy. Delivering mothers who were addicted to opioids quadrupled between 1999-2004, which resulted in an increase of infants born with Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome from 1.2 per 1000 births in the year 2000 to 5.63 per 1000 births in …

Assessment Of Intrapartum Nurses' Beliefs Related To Birth Practices, Janice Scaggs
Assessment Of Intrapartum Nurses' Beliefs Related To Birth Practices, Janice Scaggs
Doctoral Projects
Intrapartum nurses’ beliefs influence nursing behavior and nursing interventions during labor and birth. Assessing these beliefs in a regional hospital in the Southeastern United States was the focus of the doctoral project. Before the project, there was no objective data that assessed individual nurse’s beliefs and birth practices in the labor and delivery unit, or among the nursing staff as a whole. A knowledge gap existed in understanding if the nursing culture valued, promoted, and supported intended vaginal birth. Nursing leadership recognized that the overall cesarean birth rate and primary cesarean birth rate in the hospital were similar to State …

What's All The Buzzy About? Using Cryotherapy And Vibration For Pain During Vaccinations In Children, Marta L. Byma
Evidence-Based Practice Project Reports
Vaccinations are the most common painful needle procedure, with an estimated 12 billion injections given per year (CDC, 2019). The usual method for administration of vaccinations is through needle puncture, which is often painful. Children often report receiving a shot as one of the most feared and painful experiences (McMurtry et al., 2015). The purpose of this evidence-based practice (EBP) project was to improve patient experiences by decreasing the pain that is associated with vaccinations through the use of a nonpharmacological method for comfort via the Buzzy® device. After thorough analysis and synthesis of the literature, the Buzzy® device that …

Nursing | Senior Theses
The purpose of this study is to assess nurses’ perceptions on the relationship between low socioeconomic status and high mortality rates of children due to motor vehicle accidents(MVAs). MVAs are the leading cause of death among children four years and older. Studies reviewed in this paper support that low socioeconomic status is associated with high child mortality rates caused by motor vehicle accidents. Factors contributing to these high mortality rates include: the lack of or improper use of restraints, low parental education attainment levels, black or Hispanic race, and environmental risks of low socioeconomic areas. A mixed methods study is …
