The purposed evidence-based practice (EBP) project focuses on a nursing intervention (team huddles) to increase safety and reduce inpatient fall rates. Negative outcomes to consider from an inpatient fall are harm and injury to the patient along with increased health care cost for the patient as well as hospital facility. Accrued cost associated with an in-patient injury resulting from a fall is not reimbursed according to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. The additional cost for hospital-acquired falls is estimated to be $6,694 (95% CI: -$1,277 to $14,665) (Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, 2017). This was only related …

BACKGROUND: It is crucial that nursing homes have adequate personal protective equipment (PPE) and staff to protect residents and staff from COVID-19. Some states have taken actions to mitigate shortages of PPE and staffing in nursing homes, including creating dedicated long-term care (LTC) teams and supporting staffing capacity.

OBJECTIVE: To examine whether state actions and nursing home characteristics are associated with shortages of PPE and staffing.

Ageism is a societal concern that greatly affects the social, emotional, physical, and mental health of older adults. One way to decrease ageist attitudes and improve the treatment of older adults is to address and improve age stereotypes among young adults. Using data from students participating in an intergenerational digital-learning program, the present study investigated change in students’ stereotypes of older adults and aging. We examined change from pre- and post-scores in student attitudes toward older adults and the type of adjectives used to describe older adults. Background: A national, systematic diagnosis and care pathway has the potential to alleviate pressing challenges experienced by individuals with dementia, their carers, and healthcare providers. International exemplars were sought to compare/contrast dementia care with current practice in the United States (US). The 2013 New Zealand (NZ) Framework for Dementia Care was explored. The aim was to understand this systematic, primary care-led, home- and community-focused dementia management approach from the perspective of those delivering care. Providers in one US state were similarly studied.

Background: Pressure injuries have been known to affect approximately 2.5 million patients each year, with roughly 60,000 patients dying as a direct result of a pressure injury. Associate healthcare costs are between $9.1-$11.6 billion per year in the United States. The cost of individual patient care was estimated between $20,900 and $151,700 per pressure injury. During the last three years, pressure injury prevalence has risen within the local long-term care organization. Pressure injury prevention interventions have been developed to improve healthcare outcomes, cut costs, and increase revenue for long-term care organizations.

The Joint Commission recommends Health Literacy (HL) assessment and the use of the Teach Back Method (TBM). Background: Disrupted sleep is common among nursing home patients with dementia and is associated with increased agitation, depression, and cognitive impairment. Detecting and treating sleep problems in this population are therefore of great importance, albeit challenging. Systematic observation and objective recordings of sleep are time-consuming and resource intensive and self-report is often unreliable. Commonly used proxy-rated scales contain few sleep items, which affects the reliability of the raters' reports. Neurologic insults such as strokes and traumatic brain injuries (TBI) affect over 1 million Americans every year. The lack of current knowledge informing accurate prognoses causes victims and their loved ones distress, and is a focus of much research. The purpose of this study was to determine whether patient age at time of insult could predict change in functional outcomes during inpatient rehabilitation.

Methods

Background: Adverse drug events (ADEs) are a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in older adults (age ≥ 65). Polypharmacy and potentially inappropriate medications (PIMs) are especially prevalent in this population and are a notable contributing risk factor for ADEs. Research demonstrates that comprehensive medication reconciliation that includes evaluation of both the risks and benefits of medications, in conjunction with deprescribing practices, can reduce PIMs; therefore, reducing ADEs.
