Implementing Universal Adult Depression Screening In A Rural Maine Free Medical Clinic, Karen Hussion
Implementing Universal Adult Depression Screening In A Rural Maine Free Medical Clinic, Karen Hussion
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects
Abstract
BACKGROUND: Depression in adults is a leading cause of disability, morbidity and mortality worldwide with an estimated prevalence of 20% in the US population. Despite estimates that one out of every five Americans suffers from depression, less than 50% of adult primary care patients with depression are identified, and less than 5% of all adult primary care patients are screened. To increase early detection and management of depression, the United States Protective Service Task Force (USPSTF) recommends routine depression screening for adults older than 18 years in primary care settings.

The Effects Of Non-Pharmacological Interventions For Behavior And Psychological Symptoms Of Dementia: A Benchmark Study, Rachel R. Williams
The Effects Of Non-Pharmacological Interventions For Behavior And Psychological Symptoms Of Dementia: A Benchmark Study, Rachel R. Williams
MSN Capstone Projects
The management of behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) in patients who reside in nursing homes can be challenging. These neuropsychiatric behaviors can include but are not limited to aggression, agitation, delirium, depression, and psychosis (Cloak & Al Khalili, 2022). Patients with BPSD often have difficulty expressing their needs due to the disease process, resulting in further complexity when managing behaviors. There are no psychotropic medications to treat BPSD specifically, but many are often prescribed to treat the symptoms or behaviors exhibited by patients. The use of psychotropics, especially long-term can cause a myriad of adverse effects and should …

Implementing Gerontological Education Into Undergraduate Nursing Curricula, Amanda Gleason
Non-Thesis Student Work
The United States has an ever-increasing older adult population, with nearly one-fifth of US citizens over the age of 65 (United States Census Bureau, 2022). America is already in need of nurses trained to work with aging patients and that need is only expected to grow. Many registered nurses (RNs) choose specialties other than gerontological care, with only approximately four percent of RNs currently working in long-term care facilities or retirement or nursing homes (Smiley et al., 2021). Nursing students often, knowingly or unknowingly, have preconceived notions of older adults or older patients that can affect their interest, or lack …

Providing care to a spouse can be especially challenging for older adults given their compounding stressors resulting from aging and caregiving. This cross-sectional study examines the relationships between caregiving stressors and caregiver mental health problems and the potential mediator (i.e., caregiving relationship quality) of these associations. A total of 431 Americans (≥65 years) were selected from the National Study of Caregiving. Path analysis shows that care assistance was positively associated with caregiver mental health problems, and this association was mediated by negative relationship quality (Indirect effect =.14, p =.016). Moreover, role overload was positively associated with caregiver mental health problems, …
Promoting Sleep To Decrease Delirium, Stephanie Mayne
Promoting Sleep To Decrease Delirium, Stephanie Mayne
MSN Capstone Projects
Delirium is potent risk factor for complications, an increase length of stay, and mortality. Hospital acquired delirium is a prevalent and serious health condition that can occur in patients, especially the older adult population, when admitted to the hospital. It has the ability to be prevented if properly addressed and interventions are set in place to help reduce the occurrence of hospital acquired delirium. Many factors can contribute to the development of delirium, including a disruption of one’s circadian rhythm. Sleep is not always a high priority in the hospital, therefore there are little interventions and goals aimed at improving …

Use Of Text Messaging For Type Two Diabetes Management In Patients Over Sixty-Five, Charles Head
Master of Science in Nursing Family Nurse Practitioner
Why is there a need for tight glucose control for diabetics sixty-five years old or older? Tight control of glucose which can be trended as a 90-day snapshot of blood sugar control is measured using HgA1C levels(Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2019). HgA1c levels under six percent in diabetics have been shown to reduce diabetic complications that be detrimental to health(Krapek et al., 2004). Adults aged sixty-five years old or older are also at greater risk for the development of acute and chronic diseases that are a result of poor blood sugar management(Leung et al., 2018). Adherence to prescribed …
