Interventions Aimed To Reduce Hospital Admissions In Patients With Cardiovascular Disease Related To Substance Use Disorder, Hannah Lambert, Kayla Landaverde
Interventions Aimed To Reduce Hospital Admissions In Patients With Cardiovascular Disease Related To Substance Use Disorder, Hannah Lambert, Kayla Landaverde
Master's Projects
Heart failure (HF) and substance use disorder (SUD) are both growing epidemics in the United States. When combined, patients with concurrent substance abuse and heart failure may present with various cardiac complaints such as chest pain, hypertension, and shortness of breath. There are little to few studies specifically evaluating interventions for decompensated heart failure to counteract the rising rates of cardiovascular issues associated with SUD. This review aims to investigate the effects of interventions targeted to prevent hospital readmission in patients with congestive heart failure associated with substance use disorder. An integrative review methodology was applied to gain an inclusive …

Myasthenia Gravis, Rebecca Wheeler
Myasthenia Gravis, Rebecca Wheeler
Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)
Myasthenia gravis (MG), a neuromuscular and autoimmune disorder, is not completely understood by clinicians and scientists. The primary cause is thought to be anti-Acetylcholine receptor antibodies that attack the neuromuscular junction, causing destruction of post-synaptic junctional folds and blockade of the receptor. This causes frequent weakness and fatigability of voluntary muscles, making activities of daily living difficult for those living with MG. Although it is not an incredibly prevalent disease, the incidence is increasing in the United States due to better testing and diagnosis. Treatments are available, including cholinesterase inhibitors that raise the concentration of Acetylcholine at the neuromuscular junction …

Evidence-Based Practice Project Reports
Anxiety disorders are very prevalent in the United States. The most common type, Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), affects 6.8 million adults every year. GAD can cause significant deficits in a person’s ability to function, decrease their quality of life and increases a person’s risk of attempting suicide. The purpose of this evidence-based practice (EBP) project was to improve the outcomes of adults diagnosed with GAD in an internal medicine setting by implementing a protocol composed of a combination of interventions. A thorough literature search was conducted to find the best available evidence to support the project. A total of 11 …

Screening And Follow Up For Postpartum Depression: How To Improve Practice, Mallory Matusik
Evidence-Based Practice Project Reports
Postpartum depression (PPD) is one of the most common mental health conditions, affecting one in seven women during their reproductive years (American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists [ACOG], 2018). The purpose of this evidence-based practice (EBP) project was to improve screening and management of PPD using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) screening tool and a protocol for appropriate treatment and follow up care for PPD. A protocol was created by the project leader with information on screening and diagnosis, follow up, and treatment for PPD. The protocol also included information on how to assess for suicidal and/or homicidal ideation …

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, Aaron Mcneilan
Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)
The following poster presentation provides a brief overview of the disease process of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). COPD is one of the leading causes of disability and death worldwide, and its incidence does not appear to be declining. The most common factor causing COPD is cigarette smoking, which is modifiable. Other contributors are environmental air pollutants which some people may encounter depending on where they live or their occupation. This presentation is a culmination of information from different scholarly sources which discuss the symptoms, pathophysiology, causes, management, and prevention of COPD.

Implementation Of A Cost-Effective Treatment Algorithm For The Management Of Acne Vulgaris In College Students, Cristina Borsilli
Evidence-Based Practice Project Reports
Acne is one of the most common skin disorders in the United States, occuring in over 5.1 million Americans. Of those with acne, 53.8% are adults between the ages of 18 and 44 years old (American Academy of Dermatology [AAD], 2017). Acne can lead to multiple issues such as scarring, poor self-esteem, anxiety, and depression (Zaenglein et al., 2016). Acne can also negatively impact quality of life (Cengiz & Gurel, 2020). The purpose of this evidence-based project was to develop a cost-effective treatment algorithm for the management of acne vulgaris in adult college students. A literature search determined the best …
Treatment Of Acute Bronchitis In Active Duty Military Members Benchmark Project, Nicole Williams
Treatment Of Acute Bronchitis In Active Duty Military Members Benchmark Project, Nicole Williams
MSN Capstone Projects
Antibiotic resistant infections are a growing problem in the United States and the world. The main cause of this is antibiotic prescriptions, which can not only cause antibiotic resistance but adverse events. Decreasing the amount of antibiotics prescribed for inappropriate conditions can help to decrease the rates of antibiotic resistant infections and the problems these infections can cause. One illness that is treated frequently with antibiotics, against recommendations, is acute bronchitis. Acute bronchitis is a self-limiting viral infection, characterized by cough. By decreasing the number of providers who are prescribing antibiotics for acute bronchitis, the clinic can help to prevent …

Home Exercise Therapy For The Treatment Of Knee Osteoarthritis, Kezia Nixon
Home Exercise Therapy For The Treatment Of Knee Osteoarthritis, Kezia Nixon
Theses and Dissertations
Knee pain is the chief complaint of most osteoarthritis patients, and encourages them to seek medical attention. Unfortunately, pharmacological approaches to the treatment of knee osteoarthritis have been found to be inadequate. Given the prevalence and chronicity of osteoarthritic knee pain, there is an obvious need for treatments that can be provided for the course of the disease, with minimal adverse side effects. Exercise therapy has been found to significantly improve both pain and function among individuals with knee osteoarthritis. The primary objective of this quality improvement project was to investigate the effectiveness of a home-based therapeutic exercise program on …

Evaluation, Treatment, And Education In The Hospice Setting By Initiating A Formalized Pain Card, Alyssa M. Soprano
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this DNP quality improvement project was to evaluate the use of a formalized pain card that Nurse Practitioners could use to assist clients and caregivers in making the decisions necessary for safe and effective pain management with improving outcomes by using the Brief Pain Inventory Form for measuring: 1) decreased pain, 2) increased pain, 3) pain relief. The appraised evidence suggested that there was a need for a policy standard for patients to notify when pain is unrelieved despite exhausting all other efforts to control pain (Glowacki, 2015). Forty-one (n=41) hospice patients were surveyed pre and post …
Gram-Negative Bacteria And Sepsis, Christine D. Ridge
Gram-Negative Bacteria And Sepsis, Christine D. Ridge
Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)
Today’s medical world encompasses an environment in which gram-negative bacteria that once were defeated with common antibiotics, have now become resistant. Gram-negative bacteria like Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Enterobacter, and Acinetobacter are pathogens that are an emerging threat causing sepsis due to multidrug-resistance (Pop-Vicas & Opal, 2014, p.189). The multidrug-resistance mechanisms of gram-negative bacteria coupled with a patient population commonly seen in hospital settings, that consist of immunocompromised adults due to advancing age, comorbidities (e.g. AIDS, history of transplants, diabetes, and chemotherapy), and immunotherapies, create an environment for advanced infection or sepsis to take place.
Complications of multidrug-resistant gram-negative bacteria …
