Attempts to decrease its incidence have focused on appearance-based interventions. In 2017, about 70% of U.S. women over the age of 21 obtained a Papanicolaou (Pap) test, which screens for cervical cancer. African American women have a cervical cancer screening rate of 74.6% and Hispanic women have a rate of 68.6%. The cervical cancer screening rates decrease to 51% for women who are uninsured (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2017). Diabetic retinopathy is the most common microvascular complication associated with poorly controlled diabetes. Yet, only 60% of the diabetic population receives an annual eye examination by an eye specialist. Retinal imaging increases surveillance of retinopathy, however, it does not take the place of a comprehensive eye examination by an ophthalmologist or optometrist. Despite recommended guidelines, reported screening rates are only 31% to 55%, well below the goal of 75% set by the American Cancer Society. Purpose: Home visits, once a popular but now uncommon form of health care delivery, are on the rise. Few studies have focused on the value the experience brings to resident physicians and their patients.

Methods: A 6-month pilot was conducted with 11 residents who participated in 32 home visits with 11 patients. Patient and resident experiences were captured through a survey following the home visits.

Purpose: The overall aim of this project was to gather information from two groups of stakeholders, providers and patients, on the feasibility of implementing prevention practitioners in the primary care system to address overweight and obesity.

An in-service education session on the 2017 High Blood Pressure Guidelines was provided to clinical staff. The purpose of this project was to increase patient referrals for spirometry to confirm COPD diagnosis. A quasi-experimental design was incorporated in a primary care office. A retrospective pre-intervention chart audit and two post-chart audits, 30-days apart, compared the frequency of documented spirometry to confirm a COPD diagnosis. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common cause of high blood pressure but often undetected in patients with hypertension. Screening tools for OSA exist but are underutilized. This project aimed to identify current practices and perceptions related to screening for OSA in patients with hypertension and improve primary care provider knowledge of OSA and screening rates using the STOP-BANG screening tool. The providers acknowledged the importance of screening patients with hypertension but there was no increase in screening after education was provided. Effective screening tools exist but effective strategies to bring this evidence to practice need to be explored further.
