The Effect Of Length Of Nursing Shift On The Development Of Medical Errors, Andrew J. Hom Jan 2025

The Effect Of Length Of Nursing Shift On The Development Of Medical Errors, Andrew J. Hom

Nursing | Senior Theses

The relationship between extended nurse work hours and increased clinical errors is a growing concern in nursing and healthcare systems. This issue has only grown more pronounced since the pandemic, which exacerbated staffing shortages and placed unprecedented demands on the nursing workforce. Longer shifts often lead to fatigue, impaired decision-making, and decreased cognitive performance, creating challenges for both nurses and patients. To better frame the analysis, this thesis relied on The Swiss Cheese Model to better conceptualize risk management. This thesis examined the correlation between consecutive hours worked and the frequency of errors made by nurses while also exploring the …

Preparing Nurses For Medical-Assistance In Dying: The Role Of Comprehensive Education And Training, Keira O'Reilly

Nursing | Student Research Posters

Medical-assistance in dying (MAID) is a process in which a physician prescribes lethal medications that the consenting patient will self-administer with the intention of ending their life. By April 2024, medical-assistance in dying was legal in 10 states as well as the District of Columbia (“Death with Dignity,” 2024). With an evolving legal landscape around MAID, healthcare professional training on this procedure is often overlooked and inadequate (Winters et al., 2022). This is especially true for ICU nurses who manage critical and often end of life cases. This lack of education leaves nurses underprepared for the legal, ethical, and emotional …

Background

A common goal for healthcare is healthcare for all, through which can be achieved when communication between the client and healthcare team is established. There are millions of immigrants worldwide who are not granted the healthcare that they deserve simply because of a lack of understanding in a country’s dominant language.

Patients with a limited language proficiency in a new country can have difficulty in understanding the care that they receive, which leads them to toil with understanding their healthcare options, let alone establishing expectations. This issue also stretches onto the risks of patient safety, in which urgent needs …
