Examining Body Mass Index And Sepsis Mortality At One Year After Sepsis, Jamie D. Robinson
Examining Body Mass Index And Sepsis Mortality At One Year After Sepsis, Jamie D. Robinson
Theses and Dissertations
Introduction: Sepsis is a serious and life-threatening syndrome affecting 1.7 million Americans annually and resulting in approximately 270,000 deaths. An “obesity paradox” where obese individuals have lower sepsis mortality than their non-obese counterparts has been described. The problem is that the longevity of the effect is unknown, and few studies have examined the obesity paradox after 1-2 months post-diagnosis.
Methods: This retrospective cohort study examined clinical, demographic, and biomarker variables thought to affect sepsis mortality at three-time points: 30 days, 180 days, and at one year post-sepsis diagnosis in order to shed light on specific factors that might define …

Preparing Healthcare Staff for Cardiac Arrest Codes in the Outpatient Clinical Setting: Code Drill Training Improves Patient Outcomes
The acuity of care provided in outpatient clinical settings across the United States continues to rise. It is estimated that more than 350,000 cardiac arrests occur outside of a hospital each year (AHA, 2019). For the purpose of this clinical nurse leader (CNL)-lead quality improvement project, the relevant focus is directed towards improving the knowledge, physical skills and perceptions of healthcare staff within an urgent care center (UCC) regarding the application of advanced rescue skills. It is important to note that the …
Just Culture: It's More Than Policy, Linda Ann Paradiso, Nancy Sweeney
Just Culture: It's More Than Policy, Linda Ann Paradiso, Nancy Sweeney
Publications and Research
Any healthcare organization’s top priority is effective and safe care. Despite this, medical error is the third-leading cause of death in the US. Hospitals are imperfect systems where nurses have competing demands and are forced to improvise and develop workarounds. Errors rarely occur in a vacuum, rather they’re a sequence of events with multiple opportunities for correction. Clinical nurses can have a significant impact on reducing errors due to their proximity to patients. When errors are identified, the events and impact on safe care need to be shared. Just culture is a safe haven that supports reporting. In a just …
An Investigation Of The Relationships Between And Among Disaster Preparedness Knowledge, Perceived Use Of Intuition, And Triage Decision Making Of Emergency Department Registered Nurses In Acute Care Hospitals Using Benner’S Novice To Expert Theory, Brian Charles Schneider
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Background: Disasters are man-made or natural events that challenge resources and support in an environment lacking rules and regulations. Nurses represent the largest resource in healthcare and are among the first to encounter victims of disaster, thus having knowledge of disaster preparedness is essential to disaster response. However, there is a lack of empirical evidence concerning the relationships between everyday elements of nursing practice such as intuition and triage decision-making and disaster preparedness knowledge.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to examine the relationships between and among disaster preparedness knowledge, perceived use of intuition, and triage decision-making in emergency …

Sepsis is a serious complication caused by an overwhelming immune response to infection that affect millions of people worldwide each year. Sepsis is a time sensitive illness that requires early identification and quick interventions to improve patient outcomes. This quality improvement project includes a team of clinical nurse leader (CNL) students and gathering information on the nursing compliance of the sepsis protocol at a large metropolitan hospital. The observations on different inpatient units and chart review conducted at the large metropolitan hospital led to increased awareness of gaps that prolong the identification of sepsis among patients; also to the creation …
Perceived Knowledge And Perceptions Of Palliative Care Among Advanced Practice Cardiac Providers, Jordan Vance
Perceived Knowledge And Perceptions Of Palliative Care Among Advanced Practice Cardiac Providers, Jordan Vance
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Providers of healthcare have continued to focus on addressing patients’ chronic health outcomes. When understanding how to manage chronic disease, there remains many opportunities in facilitation of better management. With such a wide range of individuals who suffer with a chronic condition, better management to address this population is essential. Palliative care aids in accomplishing this task. It was seen that there was a lack of education in relation to palliative care, with perceptions that continued to be a barrier to the utilization of the service. Due to the lack in education, the strongest barrier to palliative care service utilization …
Barriers To Advance Directives, Anna Malia Connor Ticknor
Barriers To Advance Directives, Anna Malia Connor Ticknor
Grace Peterson Nursing Research Colloquium
Abstract
Background: Advanced directives (ADs) are legal documents that allows an individual to document their specific wishes for medical care should they be unable to speak for themselves. The use of advanced directives has implications directing the course of end-of-life care affecting both the cost and direction of care. Advance directives can clarify confusion and provide guidance, but their implementation is not clearly defined within the healthcare system. Despite their implications, multiple surveys indicate these documents have limited use within the United States for reasons that are not easily isolated including lack of knowledge of advanced directives and lack of …

Implementation of SBAR reporting in the ED
Abstract
In our emergency department, reports given to the accepting floor nurse, transfer of care between emergency department nurses and nurses reporting to physicians are given in many different formats with no continuity. It has been reported that 1,744 deaths and $1.7 billion in hospital costs related to miscommunications (CRICO Strategies, 2015). With the implementation of the SBAR reporting tool, we can begin to see a decrease in miscommunications, and improve patient and staff satisfaction. The SBAR framework not only enhances the clarity and efficiency of communication between team members but also assures …

Goals of an initial investigation and subsequent implementation of sustainable stroke health fairs for non-English speaking communities were evaluated to assess primary healthcare concerns that the SEA community face and to suggest long-term solutions to these issues. Initial investigation required researching population-specific minority health statistics to quantify the prevalence of chronic diseases and conditions which were prioritized in terms of needs versus disparities. Research came from evidence base practice guidelines and personal concern …
Reducing Annual Emergency Department Visits Through Improved Asthma Discharge Teaching, Alvin R. Walters
Reducing Annual Emergency Department Visits Through Improved Asthma Discharge Teaching, Alvin R. Walters
Master's Projects and Capstones
Asthma is the most common pediatric condition in the United States, and a child's home environment plays an impactful role in the triggering of asthma exacerbations (Harper et al., 2015). Current emergency department (ED) ideology focuses on symptoms management, with little time spent on education, and virtually no attention paid to the home environment. Evidence shows that programs which incorporate home environmental assessments into asthma patient education produce a reduction in annual ED visits, fewer missed school days, decreased use of rescue medications, and improvements in quality of life (Gruber K.J., et al, 2016, Hollenbach J.P. & Cloutier M.M., 2015, …
