Purpose: We examined whether sleep characteristics and adverse social exposures were associated with elevated blood pressure (BP) in young adult black women. Methods: This is a cross-sectional analysis of existing data from 581 black females who participated in the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (Add Health). Adverse social exposures included child abuse, discrimination, perceived stress, social isolation, and subjective social status. Self-reported sleep characteristics were measures of duration, latency, continuity, and snoring. Logistic regression was used to evaluate the influence of social exposures and sleep characteristics on BP. Results: Among the women (mean age=29.1 years), 32.4% had …
Decreasing Nurses’ Stress In The Emergency Room Utilizing Mindfulness Meditation, Andrea L. Entus
Decreasing Nurses’ Stress In The Emergency Room Utilizing Mindfulness Meditation, Andrea L. Entus
Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Background: Emergency Room (ER) nurses are challenged both physically and emotionally, and are repeatedly exposed to severe occupational stress (d'Ettorre & Greco, 2016; Duffy et al., 2015). For example, some stressors are demands from patients and physicians, long hours, complex diagnoses, and a fast pace (Hunsaker et al., 2015). A considerable number of nurses experience work-related interpersonal conflict, secondary traumatic stress, and other stress disorders, which negatively affects the quality of patient care they deliver (Westphal et al., 2015). Purpose: The purpose of this evidence-based practice project was to implement a mindfulness meditation intervention to decrease emergency room nurses’ stress. …

This sparked an interest in an intervention to combat nurse burnout. Literature was found on gratitude which has been found to increase resiliency. An increase in resiliency, in various populations, has been found to decrease perceived stress and feelings of burnout. This researcher investigated the use of gratitude journaling for 21 days as means to decrease perceived stress and feelings of burnout while increasing gratitude and resiliency. The PSS, GQ, BRS, & BBI tools were …
Proposal Of The Need For Mental Health First Aid Training Of Associate Degree Nursing Faculty In A Community College Setting, Amy Kelly
Master of Science in Nursing Theses and Projects
Mental health issues are on the rise among students in universities as well as community colleges. College can be a stressful time in many people’s lives especially when the added demand of work and family are involved. Community colleges and universities use counseling services for their mental health needs but sometimes the services are not used due to the stigma that comes along with mental health. Nursing school can be a challenging time for students because of the rigorous training and workload. This project poses to implement Mental Health First Aid Training (MHFA) for faculty and staff of a nursing …
Associations Between Psychosocial Stressors, Genes, And Cardiovascular Disease In At-Risk Adults, Kaitlin Voigts Key
Associations Between Psychosocial Stressors, Genes, And Cardiovascular Disease In At-Risk Adults, Kaitlin Voigts Key
Theses and Dissertations--Nursing
Psychosocial stressors have a significant adverse impact on cardiovascular health. While better medical treatments and increased emphasis on healthy lifestyle have improved cardiovascular health for many in the United States over the past 50 years, there are persistent inequities in cardiovascular disease (CVD) rates, with the highest rates among populations burdened by chronic exposure to psychosocial stressors such as discrimination and anxiety, among others. Genetic factors may interact with these stressors further influencing the rates of CVD in these populations. The purpose of this dissertation is to examine associations among psychosocial stressors and other CVD risk factors, and the influence …

Perceptions Of Nurses After The First Year Of Practice: Expectations And Reality, Susan R. Lesser
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Background: The nursing profession is facing a critical shortage stemming from retirement of experienced nurses, increasing healthcare needs of an older population, and more inclusive healthcare coverage. Newly licensed nurses (NLNs) have been the long-term plan to fill the gap. Despite the support from nurse residency programs (NRPs), many of these graduate nurses are leaving their first position. This turnover of nurses is detrimental to the nursing shortage, and financially burdensome for health care systems.
Purpose: Two aims were explored: 1) to better understand the perceptions of newly licensed nurses after the first year of practice about their expectations and …

Decreasing Caregiver Stress, Dexter Ramos
Decreasing Caregiver Stress, Dexter Ramos
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Stress is both critical and personal experience and has significant effects on caregivers’ physical, mental, and social well-being. The nature of caregiving and the responsibility to work and serve individuals at their illness conditions are very personal encounters that often result in adverse effects on the health and well-being of caregivers (Frederick, 2016). A decrease in stress experience can lead to the satisfaction of caregiver roles and improvement of patient’s quality of life (Choi, Jisun & Boyle, Diane, 2013; Yada, Nagata, & Inagaki, 2014). This scholarly project determined that evidence-based stress management interventions have decreased the perceived stress in caregivers. …

Nursing Masters Papers
Although stress, resiliency, and well-being have been studied individually in nursing students, the relationship among these three concepts has not been well studied in the undergraduate nursing student population. The purpose of this secondary analysis was to examine the relationship of stress, resilience, and well-being in undergraduate nursing students. The primary study was conducted at a Midwestern university with 261 junior and senior nursing students. Primary investigators surveyed 261 students utilizing the Perceived Stress Scale, Connor-Davidson Resiliency Scale 25, and Linear Analog Scale Assessment. This study found that stress and well-being were negatively correlated (p < 0.0001), stress and resilience were negatively correlated (p < 0.0001), and well-being and resilience were positively correlated (p < 0.0001). Additionally, these concepts were compared to students’ academic terms. Stress decreased in students throughout their academic terms while well-being increased. Resilience did not change in relation to academic term.
