Quality Of Life And Health Outcomes In Overweight And Non-Overweight Children With Asthma., Amy Becker Manion
Quality Of Life And Health Outcomes In Overweight And Non-Overweight Children With Asthma., Amy Becker Manion
Dissertations
Over the last two decades the number of children and adolescents who are overweight has more than doubled. Currently, an estimated 18 percent of children and adolescents ages 6-19 years are overweight. Following this trend in childhood overweight, there has been an alarming increase in the number of children with asthma who are overweight. The increasing trend in both asthma and overweight has led to the suggestion of a causal relationship between the two. Childhood overweight has been found to have a profound negative impact on quality of life (QOL), yet there is a dearth of research regarding the impact …
What Are The Perceptions Of Hispanic Parents Associated With Eating Habits Of Hispanic Children Ages 6--12 And Obesity?, Amy Barrett
Nursing Theses and Capstone Projects
The main objective of this study is to identify the perceptions of Hispanic parents associated with eating habits of Hispanic children ages 6-12 and obesity. The purpose was to identify if the child's intake was different based on the parent's perception of whether or not their child had a weight problem. The idea was to examine how many times certain foods are consumed and compare that to the parent's perceptions. The study was a descriptive study. The childrenhad to be in the 95 th percentile and between the ages of 6-12 to qualify for the study. Parents were approached by …

Facilitating Factors And Barriers To Bmi Screening In Schools, Ann M. Stalter, Rosemary V. Chaudry, Barbara J. Polivka
Nursing Faculty Publications
The National Association of School Nurses advocates for body mass index (BMI) screening. Little research describes school nurse practice of BMI screening. In this descriptive study, 25 Ohio school nurses participated in three focus groups. An adapted Healthy People 2010 Determinants of Health Model guided the research questions. School nurses engaged in multiphasic data collection which was contingent on physical environment, workload, and referrals. Lack of system policy was key barrier in terms of data collection, referral, and follow-up. A key facilitating factor was physical education teachers in terms of reinforcing health. School size and privacy were components of school …
Physical Activity Levels In Obese And Non-Obese Women And Their Relationship With Body Mass Index, Perceived Self-Efficacy, Perceived Benefits And Barriers Of Exercise, And Commitment To A Plan Of Action, Rose Lange
Wayne State University Dissertations
The purpose of this descriptive correlational study was to examine relationships among selected variables and concepts within the Health Promotion Model (perceived benefits, perceived barriers to exercise, self-efficacy, commitment to plan of action) in non-obese and obese women with a focus on the behavioral outcome of physical activity (leisure & lifestyle). A group of 137 women, aged 18-50 participated in this study. BMI was found to be positively correlated to an individual's perceived barriers to action. Findings did not support the hypothesis that as BMI increases perceived benefits, self-efficacy, commitment to a plan of action and physical activity levels would …

The Effects Of Glucose Tolerance, Hypertension, And Race On Heart Rate Variability, Qt Interval Duration, And Left Ventricular Hypertrophy In Overweight-Obese Adolescents, Shirleatha T. Lee
Theses and Dissertations (ETD)
The prevalence of childhood obesity has increased remarkably within the past ten years with black youth disproportionately affected. Childhood obesity is linked to cardiovascular risk. Purposes of this study were to explore relationships between cardiac autonomic risk factors of heart rate variability (HRV), QT corrected (QTc) Interval duration, and Cornell voltage measures for left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) to body mass index (BMI), relative body mass index (RBMI), and blood pressure (BP) measures, and to examine the effects of impaired glucose tolerance (IGT), hypertension, and race on these cardiac autonomic risk factors in overweight-obese adolescents.
Methods: Overweight and obese adolescents (N …
An Examination Of Alcohol Use In The Gastric Bypass Patient, Kathleen Winston Phd, Msn, Rn
An Examination Of Alcohol Use In The Gastric Bypass Patient, Kathleen Winston Phd, Msn, Rn
Dissertations
Introduction: Obesity and morbid obesity, along with their co-morbidities, are impacting the national and international healthcare delivery systems and policy agendas. Bariatric surgery is a dynamic and fast-changing medical and surgical practice designed to mitigate the consequences of 60 million obese adults in the United States alone. Alcohol consumption after gastric bypass surgery presents potential physiological and psychological problems. Purpose: Examine the prevalence and incidence of increased alcohol consumption among a group of post-gastric bypass patients; identify the relationship of the alcohol use with time since surgery, psychosocial issues (depressive symptomatology, anxiety, coping) and demographic variables. Theoretical Framework: Coping serves …

Objective: In this review we describe the approach taken by the National Children’s Study (NCS), a 21-year prospective study of 100,000 American children, to understanding the role of environmental factors in the development of obesity.
Data sources and extraction: We review the literature with regard to the two core hypotheses in the NCS that relate to environmental origins of obesity and describe strategies that will be used to test each hypothesis.
Data synthesis: Although it is clear that obesity in an individual results from an imbalance between energy intake and expenditure, control of the obesity epidemic will require understanding of …
Occupational Stress, Dietary Self-Efficacy, Eating Habits And Body Composition In Police Officers, Rebecca Witten Grizzle
Occupational Stress, Dietary Self-Efficacy, Eating Habits And Body Composition In Police Officers, Rebecca Witten Grizzle
All ETDs from UAB
Obesity is a paramount public health threat in the U.S. as approximately twothirds of the adult population is overweight. Police officers have an even higher prevalence of overweight and obesity and other cardiovascular risk factors. Police officers often attribute their above average cardiovascular disease risk to shift work, jobrelated stress, and poor dietary habits while working. Occupational stress is a major concern among police officers. Therefore, it is important to understand the relationships among occupational stress, obesity, and diet habits. However, few research studies have characterized these relationships in police officers. The specific aims of this study were to determine …

Psychometric Testing Of The Walker's Feelings And Thoughts About Weight Scale In Taiwan, Shu-Wen Chang Phd
Psychometric Testing Of The Walker's Feelings And Thoughts About Weight Scale In Taiwan, Shu-Wen Chang Phd
Dissertations
Background: The majority of women do not return to their pre-pregnant weight after six weeks postpartum in Taiwan. Excessive postpartum weight retention or gain can lead to long-term obesity and increase a woman's risk of major health problems. Trends among Taiwanese women reveal an increasing prevalence of obesity. Limiting postpartum weight retention is important for preventing long-term obesity development. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to examine predictors of postpartum weight gain among Taiwanese women using the modified Thriving Model (Walker & Kim, 2002) as the guiding conceptual framework and to examine the psychometric properties of a Chinese Version …
The Role Of Advanced Nurse Practitioner In Health Promotion And Disease Prevention Of Obesity In Children, Pamela Johnson
The Role Of Advanced Nurse Practitioner In Health Promotion And Disease Prevention Of Obesity In Children, Pamela Johnson
MSN Research Projects
Obesity is one of the most serious health problems facing the youth of the United States. Evidence suggests that the problem is getting worse rapidly. Obesity is now the most prevalent physiological and psychological disease of children and adolescents. Many people; i.e., governmental authorities and national leaders in the health care system perceived that obesity will impact health care in the United States, as well as in the world, now and in the future; specifically, increased cost, increased individual and community health infractions, problems, and quality of life. Many people think it is a cosmetic problem only, but in reality, …
The Relationship Between Parental Physical Activity Levels And Their Child's Body Mass Index, Juracia Carbajal
The Relationship Between Parental Physical Activity Levels And Their Child's Body Mass Index, Juracia Carbajal
Master's Projects
This study compared the relationships between parental physical activity levels and their child's body mass index (BMI) using a convenience sample of volunteer parents at a school-based health clinic. Anonymously, parents completed a seven-question survey utilizing the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ). The data analysis indicated that parental physical activity did not have a significant influence on a child's BMI. Forty-two percent of the children were overweight or at risk for overweight, demonstrating the need for increased physical activity and improved nutritional guidance. The school nurse has a significant role in providing education about health, nutrition, and obesity prevention strategies …

Factors Related To Self-Care Agency And Self-Care Practices Of Obese Adolescents, Kathy Shadle James Dnsc, Msn, Rn
Dissertations
Identification of factors that influence obese adolescents' health behaviors is necessary if obese adolescents are to benefit from therapeutic interventions. The purpose of this descriptive-correlational study was to identify the relationships between selected basic conditioning factors (BCFs)--perceived health status (PHS), perceived self-efficacy (PSE), family satisfaction (FS), and life events (LE)--and the self-care agency (SCA) and self-care practices (SCP) among obese adolescents. The relative predictive strength of each BCF in relation to the outcome variables was also explored. Orem's self-care theory provided the conceptual framework for this study. The convenience sample of 100 obese adolescents included campers from two southern California …
A Survey Of Menstrual Symptoms Of Obese Women, Ruthie Smith
A Survey Of Menstrual Symptoms Of Obese Women, Ruthie Smith
MSN Research Projects
A descriptive study was conducted to survey females who are obese and determine what problems they encounter with menses. The researcher hypothesized that when obese women are surveyed about menstrual problems and the degree of obesity is correlated to the presence of menstrual problems, there would be no significant correlation. In order to facilitate testing of this hypothesis, two operational hypotheses were drafted. The first operational hypothesis was that when the total number of menstrual problems was correlated with the degree of obesity there would be no significant correlation. The second operational hypothesis was that when menstrual problems were individually …
