Background:

Marginalized patient populations, such as people experiencing homelessness, receive a lower quality of care linked to stereotyping and biases (Alspach, 2018). Populations receiving substandard healthcare are often subconsciously identified by attributes such as age, race, mental health, housing, and social status (Padilla-Moledo et al., 2016). These stigmatized attributes can be the underpinning of bias. The health status of people experiencing homelessness is generally poorer than housed populations, with evidence demonstrating the difficulties they encounter when attempting access to healthcare (Klop et al., 2018).

Immobility is a problem among mechanically ventilated patients in the intensive care unit. Early mobility has been shown to benefit mechanically ventilated patient outcomes by minimizing hospital stays and costs, decreasing the risk of infection, and improving muscle strength to lead to a better quality of life. No inclusive checklists exist to evaluate patients progressing to varying levels of mobility based on specific criteria such as hemodynamics, neurological function, and disease acuity. The purpose of this study was to evaluate construct validity, internal consistency, and convergence reliability of the Nursing Altruistic Execution Scale (NAES), a novel instrument assessing the perceived ability to help others through work.

Our single-center, quality improvement project evaluated the impact of a fall reduction plan while using a Just Culture Algorithm that included weekly fall reviews involving front line staff using a non-punitive structure. The project has shown successful results.

Methods

Prior to starting the program, data at this institution indicated falls were higher than the national fall rate of 3-5 per 1000 patient days. To achieve the goal of reducing the fall rate to below 3.1, an interdisciplinary fall committee was formed, consisting of nurses, nursing leaders, patient care technicians, pharmacists, and physical therapists. The purpose of this qualitative study was to evaluate the effects of curricular changes made to foster graduate students' understanding of how they can be catalysts of change. For more than a decade, the concept of the citizen nurse has been woven into coursework in nursing education, thus indicating an evaluation process was needed.

Method:

Ten oral history interviews were completed with current students or alumni. Data were analyzed for codes, allowing the final themes to emerge.

A survey that was administered to staff members on nine units at a pediatric hospital assessing their awareness of hair care for Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) indicated a lack of awareness. This impacts the fundamentals of nursing care, which encompasses cultural sensitivity and promoting health equity. In this survey, 12.18% (n=52) of the 427 patients on the nine participating units between December 12, 2023, and January 19, 2024, identified as BIPOC. Background: Routine blood sampling can be conducted using venepuncture, inserting a new peripheral intravenous cannula (PIVC), or utilising an existing one. The practice of blood sampling from a cannula requires handling and movement of the cannula bung. It is discouraged due to safety concerns linked to increased risk of phlebitis, infection, or reduced dwell time.
