The purpose of this study was to explore organizational learning in an orthopaedic hospital unit. Skill in organizational learning is necessary to achieve high reliability in a dynamic healthcare environment, yet organizational learning in hospital units is not well understood. A learning history was conducted with a high-performing orthopaedic unit. Findings were interpreted in the context of a previous learning history conducted with a critical care unit. Despite contextual differences, each unit progressed through the same four developmental stages to achieve its current state of high reliability. Challenges in Securing Community Nursing Rotation Sites Eighteen years of providing clinical placement for Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) students has demonstrated that community-based educational opportunities are shrinking due to:

•Increased regulatory requirements

•Competing numbers of nursing schools

•Increasing student enrollment

•Decreasing availability of community resources capable and willing to precept students

These issues present challenges to preparing students for nursing practice. A college of nursing at an urban, academic health center found a solution by working with unexpected partners – maximum security prisons and juvenile detention centers.

Purpose

To explore inpatient pediatric nurses' current experiences and perspectives on medication teaching.

Design and Methods

A descriptive qualitative study was conducted at a Midwest pediatric hospital. Using convenience sampling, 26 nurses participated in six focus groups. Data were analyzed in an iterative group coding process.

Results

Three themes emerged. 1) Medication teaching is an opportunity. 2) Medication teaching is challenging. Nurses experienced structural and process challenges to deliver medication teaching. Structural challenges included the physical hospital environment, electronic health record, and institutional discharge workflow while process challenges included knowledge, relationships and interactions with caregivers, and available resources. 3) Medication …

From 1999-2013, the nationwide incidence of neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) due to maternal drug use rose from 1.5/1000 to 6/1000 hospital births. There is a dearth of information regarding what happens to these children when they are discharged. The purpose of this Practice Inquiry Project is to utilize existing Delaware Medicaid data to retrospectively explore the utilization of services and gaps in care for the infant with NAS in the first year of life. An acute bronchospasm during general anesthesia can become a life-threatening intraoperative condition for any patient. Bronchospasm occurs when the bronchial smooth muscle constricts which makes ventilating the patient difficult, and can ultimately lead to hypoventilation, hypoxemia, and metabolic acidosis. It’s imperative for any anesthesia provider to understand what a bronchospasm is, its pathophysiology, differential diagnosis, and algorithm of treatments. Background: Over 50 years of literature support the nursing “golden rule” that discharge teaching begins upon admission. Parents’ poor understanding of pediatric post-operative instructions following outpatient day surgery can put their child at risk for some preventable complications after arriving home.

Purpose: To improve parents’ understanding of discharge education using earlier initiation of post-operative teaching to best meet the needs of adult learners caring for a child under age 18 after surgery.

Purpose. For breast cancer survivors, after-effects of surgery, radiation and chemotherapy can be substantial, and recurrence is a concern requiring constant surveillance. National healthcare organizations have promulgated guidelines that include providing individualized survivorship care plans (SCP’s). At a northern California oncology department, SCP’s will be prepared for breast cancer patients and delivered in-person by the oncology nurse navigator (ONN).

Method. The author worked with the ONN to develop the format and content requirements for the SCP’s. The ONN prepared individualized plans for patients and scheduled in-person appointments to deliver the SCP’s. A feedback survey to assess preliminary impact was then …

Challenges in the healthcare industry, including nursing shortages and low nursing retention, have resulted in nurses’ job dissatisfaction. Improving work environment and workload can lead to improved and equitable nursing shift assignments, which may improve nursing job satisfaction. The purpose of this EBP project was to (a) implement a patient acuity tool in the hospital unit, (b) assess its effectiveness in appropriating nursing shift assignments, and (c) evaluate its effect on nursing job satisfaction. Sudden Infant Death Syndrome(SIDS) remains a leading cause of death for infants less than one year of age. Historically, Neonatal Intensive Care units have been exempt from following SIDS safe sleep guidelines recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics(AAP) for SIDS prevention due to patient medical status and environment. However, in 2011 these guidelines were updated by the AAP to include NICU specific recommendations. Patient/visitor violence against healthcare (HC) employees is a type of workplace violence (WPV) and considered a dangerous hazard within HC occupations (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2015). Lack of recognition of the true incidence and underreporting of WPV may contribute to a false sense of security within a HC facility (HCF). Therefore, fully addressing the problem may be met with administrative resistance, resulting in poor employee perceptions of support and commitment for a zero-violence environment. Activity trackers show promise as a means to motivate children and adults to increase physical activity (PA). This study examined the effect of a text messaging intervention and use of activity trackers with a companion social website on the body mass index (BMI), body fat percentage, physical fitness, and PA self-efficacy of middle school children.
