Nurses are most directly involved with patient care and are in an excellent position to be patient educators. Patients are more likely to actively listen after establishing rapport, especially for loaded topics such as lifestyle choices. While nurses have general nutrition knowledge, they may lack current, scientifically-based information to help patients implement a healthy diet. Nurses can both educate and be an example of health habits that patients should emulate, and therefore need to be adequately informed about topics like dietary misconceptions.

The purpose of this quality improvement project was to use in situ simulation-based mock codes to evaluate the effectiveness of participants’ actions and perceived confidence, and to potentially reinforce and improve knowledge retention, skill acquisition, and confidence levels of nursing staff with regards to pediatric emergencies. Simulated drills were evaluated with a tool focused on high-performance teams and team dynamics as outlined by American Heart Association Pediatric Advanced Life Support 2016. Implementation Of Lgbt+ Health Education For Master’S Entry Nursing Students, Daniel R. Mead

Background: There is a paucity of evidence linking Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT+) health education with improvement in nursing students’ knowledge, attitudes, and comfort of LGBT+ health considerations.

Methods: In a pre- and post-test study design, a total of 77 master’s entry to nursing practice students completed the LGBT+ health educational module during the Community Health Nursing course.

Results: Statistically significant results were found between pre-test to post-test data for knowledge (p < .001, Cohen’s d 2.52), attitudes (p < .001, Cohen’s d 0.35), and comfort (p = .001, Cohen’s d 0.31) of LGBT+ health considerations.

Design A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted based on the Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews of Interventions and its reporting was checked against the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses checklist. The American Academy of Ambulatory Care Nursing convened an Invitational Summit of national leaders to assist with strategic planning for promulgation of the care coordination and transition management (CCTM™) model. The conference was devoted to CCTM and the roles of registered nurses (RNs) across the care continuum to ensure safety and quality health care. The specific emphasis was on embedding the CCTM RN in healthcare policy and payment reform, as well as integration into academic and ongoing education across all care settings and specialties.

Purpose:

LGBTQIA+ patients experience devastating mental health and substance abuse disparities. While our organization has a broad non-discrimination statement that includes gender identity and sexual orientation, there is no guidance for how to best serve these patients. Evidence suggests training sessions are a successful means of increasing LGBTQIA+ cultural competency, with “Safe Zone” identified as being especially successful on college campuses. The Healthcare Equality Index also calls for education to demonstrate healthcare organizations’ commitment to LGBTQIA+ patients.

Purpose (What): To achieve sustainable reduction of pressure injury (PI) rates through systematic culture change, in a quaternary, level 1, urban academic medical center cardiac surgery intensive care unit (CSICU).

Relevance/Significance (Why): The CSICU is a high-risk patient population, hosting multiple potential barriers to pressure injury prevention. Prior to 2012, the CSICU pressure injury rate was 17% higher than the National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators benchmark, negatively impacting patient outcomes and organizational goals. Leveraging Magnet principles of Evidence-Based Practice, CSICU advanced practice nurse leaders empowered and motivated bedside nurses to lead and sustain unit culture change.

Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) burdens intensive care units (ICU) and their patients across the world. This presentation discusses the presentation, pathophysiology, current treatment and nursing implications for ARDS. This pathophysiological process requires exceptional interprofessional teamwork by the healthcare team. It is important for nurses to have an in-depth comprehension of this disease and its manifestations so that it can be detected and treated as quickly as possible. Further research and education are needed to improve the mortality rates of patients with ARDS.

Service-learning is an experiential process of action and reflection that allows students to expand their knowledge through real-world activities that benefit others. Service-learning opportunities for baccalaureate nursing students in Kenya have provided many ongoing examples of learning from our Kenyan collaborators. Receiving ministry from those we came to serve, allows allows us, in turn, to demonstrate Christ’s humility. In this article, we share specific stories of how various community partners ministered in unexpected ways to our teams of students and faculty, as we served in Kenya through healthcare and education.

Burnout syndrome among nurses, especially within the critical care setting, has been a persistent and increasingly prevalent problem in the healthcare field. This systematic review aims to explore the common causes of burnout among nurses associated with working in a critical care setting. Twenty-five peer-reviewed articles, published between the years of 2000 and 2018, were selected for analysis and synthesis using the databases PubMed and CINAHL. Aims: The purpose of this thesis was to synthesize the current literature on alpha amylase as an emerging biomarker of microaspiration in mechanically ventilated patient.

Methods: The methodology included a review and synthesis of pertinent research articles from 1981-2018, written in English language. Criteria for inclusion in the review were all articles that evaluated α- amylase in tracheal secretions or bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BAL) as a diagnostic tool for identifying microaspiration. The search yielded 11 studies that were reviewed.

Aim: The aim of this paper is to describe the history of nursing within an early parenting service in Western Australia (WA).

Methods: Triangulation of multiple data sources was used to summarise the nursing role over 120 years. The history was discovered through a document analysis of archives, including oral histories, organisational documents, focus groups, nurses’ diaries and interviews with nurses.
