Burnout in healthcare is a problem estimated as high as 70% by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. This systematic review aims to explore the common causes of burnout among nurses associated with working in a critical care setting. Twenty-five peer-reviewed articles, published between the years of 2000 and 2018, were selected for analysis and synthesis using the databases PubMed and CINAHL. Compassion fatigue (CF), also known as secondary traumatic stress (STS), impacts critical care nurses (CCN) through exposure to pain, suffering, and loss of those for whom they provide care and results in a reduction of compassion satisfaction (CS). High incidence of CF and turnover (TO) rates at the project site were identified among CCNs. The institution's CCN TO rate was at 81% in comparison to peers in other areas at 29%–35%. RN burnout – the feeling of exhaustion from working long hours without rest – is a real concern, having been reported in many hospitals. We examine the background, causes and consequences of burnout among RNs in U.S. hospitals, in order to identify solutions to this problem. Aim: To investigate the relationship among nurses and decrease in nurse burnout followed by primary research to compare the relationship of certain coping mechanisms and burnout levels. Setting and Subjects: Southern Adventist University and BS, MSN, DNP students. Results: Showed that practicing stress management and coping mechanisms contributed to a decrease in burnout levels, especially coworker support, family support, positive attitude/optimism, exercise/physical activity, and spirituality/religion. Conclusions: Primary research supported the findings from the initial research study, which gives further evidence that coping and stress management is important and effective in minimizing burnout levels.
