Introduction: Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) is considered the most effective treatment for patients with opioid use disorder (OUD); however, MAT program retention rates are consistently low across the United States. Addressing social determinants of health (SDOH) through text message could impact MAT retention; therefore, a pilot project at a federally qualified healthcare center (FQHC) was implemented.

Methods: The Protocol for Responding to and Assessing Patients’ Assets, Risk, and Experiences (PRAPARE) SDOH screening tool was implemented for patients undergoing MAT for OUD. Community resource referrals were provided via text message based on the screening results. Retention in treatment was measured by prescriptions …

This mixed retrospective and prospective cohort study aimed to compare mortality outcomes and associated factors between two cohorts of patients diagnosed with respiratory failure: on-call physicians and Interventional Nurse Practitioners (INPs). The analysis involved 143 patients, 82 in the on-call physician cohort and 61 in the INP cohort. Contrary to initial expectations, the two cohorts had no significant difference in mortality rates (p = 0.143). However, significant differences were observed in critical variables affecting mortality, including Time from Admit to Procedure Performance (p = 0.029), ICU Length of Stay (p = 0.013), and Ventilator Days (p = 0.048), with INP-managed …

Muscle trauma requires prompt recovery mechanisms, particularly in locations lacking specialized medical facilities. Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO2) therapy at 2.5 atmospheres absolute (ATA) positively impacts muscle recovery but necessitates specialized facilities. This study assessed the effectiveness of HBO2 therapy at a more accessible pressure level, 1.5 ATA, on muscle regeneration. Crush-injured muscle of 11 male and 8 female C57BL/6 mice were treated with mild HBO2 (100% oxygen at 1.5 ATA) or hyperoxia (100% oxygen at room atmospheric pressure). Numerous studies on acculturation and acculturative stress exist; however, findings are inconsistent and overlook an exploration of differences between Hispanic and Black/African American (B/AA) adolescents’ acculturation, stress, and birth outcomes. Despite societal and cultural challenges for both minorities, Hispanic women typically have positive birth outcomes comparable to White women, but B/AA women show an increased risk for negative birth outcomes. Further, minority and adolescent childbearing women frequently receive fewer prenatal care (PNC) visits than recommended which may impact birth outcomes. This literature review assessed and determined common themes among vulnerable populations for the initiation and continuation of breastfeeding habits. The barriers identified were divided into four themes including: lack of support, inflexible employment environment, differences of breastfeeding norms and education, and financial burden. Interventions identified in this literature review were community support programs and the implementation of hospital programs and initiatives to encourage breastfeeding. The need for this research and discussion stems from the sub-optimal infant feeding practices that contribute to infant mortality rates (Gallegos et al., 2020).

A large rural healthcare system has onboarded over 200 internationally educated nurses (IENs) and needed to develop an evaluation method to determine longitudinal program outcomes. This project’s purpose was to develop an evaluation toolkit to be utilized by this health system to evaluate and support overall program outcomes. Despite mean arterial pressure (MAP) being the most reliable measure of noninvasive automatic oscillometric (NIBP) in clinical practice, clinicians instead rely on systolic and diastolic blood pressure (SBP and DBP) values to guide clinical practice.
