Implementing Nurse Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation Specialists To Maintain A Sustainable Program, David L. Boyd

Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) offers hope for patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome when other treatment methods fail. However, ECMO requires continuous hourly management leading to extremely high operating costs. With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the high number of patients on ECMO led to a significant increase in the costs when using perfusionists to manage ECMO. Switching to a nurse-driven model resulted in a 52% decrease in costs related to the hourly management. Changing to a nurse-driven program provided increased nursing support and sustainability, and with determination and support, other ECMO centers can change to nurse-driven programs too.

Problem: Hospitalized adults are at increased risk of falling due to multiple aspects, including but not limited to changes in health status, the environment, pain, weakness, confusion, and prolonged immobility. This project focused on the question: How will the utilization of the Hustler Award Program decrease fall rates in an adult inpatient medical-surgical unit?

Method: A prospective quality improvement pilot study focused on a 24-bed medical-surgical unit in a Midwest, 487-bed metropolitan-based facility.

Background: Studies show that paper-based handwritten forms have an error rate of up to 50%. Consent errors, especially in the preparation of surgery, are not merely documentation errors but patient safety pitfalls that allow for incorrect surgeries or financial loss due to aborted or delayed interventional cases. Internal organizational evidence indicates the implementation of an evidence-based opportunity as there was no use of electronic tools for consents utilized in the inpatient setting.
