Introduction

Simulation is a common strategy for health care education. Research regarding simulation for nurse practitioner education is sparse. This paper describes the integration of a nine simulation session curriculum into a nurse practitioner program, including motivating factors, process description, and lessons learned.

Results

Students report high satisfaction and improved perception of confidence and competence of knowledge, skills, and performance.

Discussion

Integrated learning experiences and outcomes that span an educational program are needed in the transition to competency-based education. This description serves as a guide for other programs seeking to incorporate simulation-based education.

Effective communication is a true value to healthcare organizations. Far too many communication sessions are detrimental to patient health outcomes. National data and hospital records are proven information to suggest communication is a major barrier to overall patient satisfaction. Organizations struggle to increase market share and patient satisfaction with a likelihood to recommend because of poor communication by physician and nurses. The use of a strategic communication tool like AIDET plus the Promise can influence the improvement of an organization’s quality of care.

BACKGROUND: To determine if the "unaffected" hand in children with hemiplegic cerebral palsy (CP) is truly unaffected.

METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of manual dexterity as measured by the Functional Dexterity Test (FDT) in 66 children (39 boys, 27 girls, mean age: 11 years 4 months) with hemiplegic CP. Data were stratified by Manual Ability Classification System (MACS) level, birth weight, and gestational age at birth, and compared with previously published normative values.

Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) are challenging, but are the studies most likely to change practice and benefit patients. RCTs investigating neonatal surgical therapies are rare. The Necrotizing Enterocolitis Surgery Trial (NEST) was the first surgical RCT conducted by the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) Neonatal Research Network (NRN), and multiple lessons were learned. NEST was conducted over a 7.25-year enrollment period and the primary outcome was death or neurodevelopmental impairment (NDI) at 18-22 months corrected age. Background: This project’s foundational focus was on improving nursing students’ preparedness for their profession and patient care. Data supports that nursing graduates face challenges at the patient bedside, which often cause injury or harm. These deficits are known as preparation-to-practice, failure-to-rescue, and transition-to-practice gaps that occur despite the integration of preceptorship and residency programs. Through the integration of concept mapping into an established curriculum, an analysis of student patient safety perceptions in a pre- and postsurvey was completed. Sepsis is a life-threatening organ dysfunction triggered by a dysregulated host response to infection. Sepsis education is a key initiative to assist nurses and patient care technicians to improve their skills in recognizing a patient in decline with escalating care concerns. This study demonstrated increased knowledge of sepsis through completion of an evidence-based computer learning program.

OBJECTIVE: To gain a better understanding of the value of mental health screening for PTSD risk in hospitalized trauma survivors.

DATA SOURCES: Studies were pooled from a literature search performed on the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), PubMed, and the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews.

STUDY SELECTION: Relevant studies published between 2015 and 2022 in English, excluding traumatic injuries incurred during combat.

DATA EXTRACTION: Ten articles were selected for inclusion in this review.

Dating app facilitated sexual assault (DAppSA) is a concerning phenomenon with minimal published research. This retrospective study explored if DAppSAs were different than other sexual assaults (SAs) committed by acquaintances through a review of 3,413 sexual assault medical forensic examination (SAMFE) charts from 2017 to 2020 in a Mountain West state in the United States. Routine Activities Theory and Confluence Model of sexual aggression provided the theoretical framework for the study. This thesis will discuss the effects nursing preceptors have on nursing students' clinical experience. This thesis will explore multiple factors that negatively impact nursing student’s communication with their preceptors. It has been found that clinical experiences are extremely important for the future of nursing students. However, there is often a communication barrier between nursing students and their preceptors. This barrier can lead to negative outcomes for new nurses entering the field. Strained communication can also create dangerous situations for patients. Due to the immaturity of their neurological, gastrointestinal, and cardio-respiratory functions, preterm infants can experience the inability to coordinate sucking, swallowing, and breathing that is essential to oral feed.
