A scoping review was conducted to explore the relationship between the cardiovascular system and neurological system to determine if there is a connection between certain mental illnesses and heart health. This study was guided through implementation of Arksey and O’Malley’s (2005) framework for scoping reviews. A literature search was conducted using PubMed, CINAHL, Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar databases. Of the 934,251 sources found, only 21 studies met the study criteria and were ultimately selected for this study. Upon review, three themes were identified: (a) anxiety and cardiovascular disease; (b) schizophrenia and cardiovascular disease; and (c) depression and cardiovascular disease. …

Weight stigma is a form of oppression that has been shown to have a detrimental impact on the well-being of people with higher weight. Healthcare providers are one of the most common sources of weight stigma, and their stigmatizing beliefs have been found to be associated with differential care for patients with “obesity”. The current study aimed to explore the feasibility of the loving-kindness meditation (LKM) as a brief intervention that reduces weight bias in nursing students by increasing self-compassion, positive, other-focused emotions, and cognitive flexibility, in order to improve compassionate care for patients with higher weight. Promoting breastfeeding (BF) is a priority of the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC). Prior research found that pregnant mothers who believed WIC recommends BF only (versus BF and formula equally OK) were more likely to initiate BF and continue through 1 month postpartum. We examine whether such mothers are more likely to continue to exclusively BF through 5 months and BF at all through the infant's first year. Methods

Neonatal early onset sepsis (EOS) remains one of the most common causes of neonatal morbidity and mortality. Neonates requiring evaluation and treatment for suspected EOS inconsistently receive antibiotics within one hour of decision to treat as recommended in the 2012 neonatal sepsis guidelines by the National Institutes for Health and Care Excellence (NICE). A mixed method quality improvement initiative was employed in a level three NICU, applying a standardized admission process to mitigate systems flaws impacting delay of first dose antibiotic. People who experience the greatest social inequities often have poor experiences in emergency departments (EDs) so that they are deterred from seeking care, leave without care complete, receive inadequate care, and/or return repeatedly for unre- solved problems. However, efforts to measure and monitor experiences of care rarely capture the experiences of people facing the greatest inequities, experiences of discrimination, or relationships among these variables. This DNP project was designed to decrease stress among employees working from home (WFH) by educating them on mindful breathing practices. Through the implementation of a mindful breathing activity, the intended project outcome was to improve stress levels of employees working from their homes. Mindful breathing is an evidence-based strategy that has demonstrated decreased stress levels. Mindful breathing was implemented among two companies employing an estimate of 170 WFH employees to improve health and well-being with potential long-term positive impact on sustainability of organizations in the post-COVID, work from home environment. With diabetes at an epidemic level in the United States, more awareness needs to be brought surrounding prediabetes and diabetes prevention. This DNP Project consists of implementing a faith-based educational informational event at a local rural church to increase diabetes awareness. Findings within this DNP project suggest that the rural population can increase knowledge of diabetes awareness through faith-based education. With a sample size of 21 participants, positive statistical significance was found on analysis of pre-test and post-test Likert style questions regarding diabetes prevention, risk factors, and diabetic resources.

Improving Self-Care Awareness Among Undergraduate Nursing Students, D'Anna Helms

The purpose of this DNP project was to improve self-care (SC) awareness among undergraduate nursing students by educating on the use of constructive SC activities. Twenty-two senior level nursing students attended an educational seminar, completed the Mindful Self-Care Scale – Clinical (MSCS-C) pre- and post-survey, and reflective journaling. A paired-samples t test was calculated to compare the mean pretest score to the mean posttest score. The mean on the pretest was 77.68 (sd= 9.33), and the mean on the posttest was 75.27 (sd= 31.59). A significant increase from pretest to posttest was found (t (21) = .307, p < .05). Thematical analysis revealed enhanced awareness and incorporation of constructive SC activities. Educational interventions which seek to improve SC awareness will generate practical and sustainable acts of SC, thus improving students’ overall success and further empowering students in their transition from graduate to licensed nurses.

Aim: The purpose of this study was to examine the trajectories of condition and independent living self-management in youth with spina bifida (SB). MethodsA diverse sample of adolescents and young adults (AYAs) with SB completed the Adolescent/Young Adult Self-Management and Independence Scale (AMIS-II) across four time points. Parents reported on demographic characteristics including age, sex, race/ethnicity, and family income. Growth in self-management and its subscales (condition and independent living) were estimated using linear mixed-effect models as a function of respondents' demographics.ResultsThis study included 99 respondents age 18 to 27 years old.
