People and Animals: The International Journal of Research and Practice

Background: Equine-assisted activities and therapies (EAAT) is a rapidly growing practice that is described as therapeutic and entertaining. Complementary therapies such as EAAT are gaining acceptance as the health care needs of the population are changing.

Method: This systematic review draws from four databases. The final review included 52 articles.

Purpose: To explain what is known about EAAT and identify literature gaps. Nursing and rural perspectives are included in the analysis and recommendations.

Findings: There are more than eight types of EAAT and different organizations around the world are providing certification for EAAT. Rural communities and organizations may benefit from …

A rise in complications at a southeastern level one trauma center had the trauma department and performance improvement personnel looking for a cause and a solution. It was determined through data mining that the patient population that was driving certain complication cohorts above acceptable levels was the injured elderly patient admitted by the non-surgical hospitalist group. Patients admitted by this group commonly sustained a single injury, mostly hip fractures. Elderly patients are admitted by this group in efforts of successfully managing the many co-morbidities these patients typically possess with co-management by the orthopedic group to manage the injury. Compassion is a common, foundational component in nursing and remains a challenge for faculty to continue to employ into nursing students. As simulation technology continues to gain momentum, faculty have expressed the benefits and downfalls as related to simulation and nursing education throughout the literature. A qualitative study was performed at a community college school of nursing to assess faculty perceptions of nursing students compassion post-simulation experiences. This project aims to reduce inpatient hospital readmission occurrences within 30 days of an initial inpatient hospitalization. Patients at high risk for readmission may have deficits in their ability to meet self-care needs after discharge. Orem’s Self-Care Deficit Nursing Theory provided the theoretical framework for the project. The education provided by this project can teach nurses to identify patients who may be at high risk for readmission. Once identified, nurses can advocate for the patient’s needs.

The COVID-19 pandemic has negatively impacted communication in healthcare. The purpose of this project was to develop a clear and uniform communication tool for healthcare members to utilize during conversations with patients, families, and caregivers. This communication tool was developed for healthcare workers, as a guide during conversations, to ensure all questions and needs are met. The communication tool is expected to show improvement in healthcare communication during a pandemic. Improvement in healthcare communication will be reflected in improved patient experience scores.

Current professional recommendations vary regarding nutritional intake in labor. The purpose of this paper is to determine whether there are differences in maternal outcomes when different forms of hydration and nutrition are used during labor. As many as half of all women do not attend postpartum care and receive desired family planning care. Left with little to no resources for obtaining contraception, many go on to have subsequent unplanned pregnancies. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists has stated that offering long-term, reversible contraception at the time of birth should be considered for these women, yet adoption of this procedure remains low. This literature review will evaluate the efficacy and advantages of postplacental intrauterine device placement and barriers to implementing the procedure.

Background/Purpose: The purpose of this literature appraisal is to determine the effectiveness of tranexamic acid (TXA) and its ability to stabilize postpartum bleeding. TXA is an antifibrinolytic pharmacologic drug found to reduce blood loss associated with trauma and patients undergoing major surgeries. When administered in combination with other uterotonics, the World Health Organization predicts the prophylactic use of TXA could globally improve the morbidity and mortality rates associated with postpartum hemorrhaging. However, burnout level in this profession is high; a 2017 survey of U.S. certified nurse-midwives and certified midwives revealed that 40.6% of these professionals were suffering from burnout. Labor dance utilizes upright positioning, hands and knees position, use of the rebozo and other alternative labor and birth positions as a traditional means of taking advantage of gravity and increasing the pelvic diameter in labor and birth.
