Patients require self-care to manage complications and exacerbations associated with complex illness. Deficits in self-care result in negative health outcomes and drive resource utilization upward. The identification of potential factors related to self-care is important. Loneliness may be one factor that influences patients’ ability and desire to care for themselves. Background: Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) can result in devastating long-term neurological morbidity and/or death. Current evidence recommends initiating Therapeutic Hypothermia (TH), as early as possible, however, research specifically describing TH timing in relation to short-term infant outcomes is limited with mixed results.

Purpose: Examine TH timing (TH initiation time & time to target temperature) on short-term outcomes (neonatal seizure; brain injury) of infants >35weeks, with suspected HIE, born at a large urban women’s medical center.

Methodology: Retrospective, cross-sectional, correlational design examining data extracted from electronic health record from November 1, 2012- March 31, 2020. Descriptive and inferential statistics were performed.

Background According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 3,600 infants died suddenly and unexpectedly in the US in 2017 (CDC, 2020a). These deaths occurred among infants less than 1 year of age, having no immediately obvious cause. These sudden unexpected infant deaths (SUID) have three commonly reported mortality (or vital records) codes, which include Accidental Suffocation and Strangulation in Bed (ASSB), Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), and other ill-defined deaths (CDC, 2020b; Mathews, MacDorman, & Thoma, 2015). Background: Research suggests that daily bathing with chlorhexidine gluconate (CHG) among cancer patients can decrease rates of central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSI). Literature supports the premise that the highest rates of patient compliance using CHG baths occurs with direct RN assistance or observation of the bath. Methods: Nurses employed on a hematology/oncology unit in Middle Tennessee were surveyed about their perception of how many CHG bath were not occurring on a given day and then educated via an online module, on the efficacy of daily CHG baths. Background: Because hospice professionals are repeatedly exposed to death, they are at a higher risk of developing compassion fatigue (Alkema et al., 2008). Over time, compassion fatigue may result in burnout, potentially causing a depletion of professionals in the hospice field (Gallagher, 2013; Haddad & Toney-Butler, 2020). While the hospice industry cannot afford to lose professionals to burnout, stress from a rapidly growing elderly population and work challenges related to the COVID-19 pandemic potentially place hospice professionals at an increased risk. While triage has been well documented in emergency departments, military, and natural disasters, it is far less well-understood in the primary care setting. Heart failure (HF) is the leading cause of 30-day hospital readmission, with up to 23.5% of Medicare beneficiaries requiring subsequent admission within 30 days post hospital discharge (CMS, 2020a). Mobile-health applications (MHA), such as smartphone applications, have emerged as cost-effective methods to safely manage chronic disease in the outpatient setting (Inglis et al., 2015). The purpose of this evidence-based practice (EBP) project was to evaluate the impact of a MHA on HF-related 30-day readmission rates. Heart Failure (HF) is a primary diagnosis for hospital admission in adults from the Emergency Department (ED), but not all patients require hospitalization. Emergency Heart Failure Mortality Risk Grade (EHMRG) is designed to estimate mortality in patients with acute HF in ED settings.

Objectives

To risk-stratify patients with acute HF using EHMRG scores and assess patient safety.

Methods

Retrospective cohort analysis of 304 patients with acute HF presenting to an ED at a large tertiary healthcare center. EHMRG scores were calculated per previous thresholds. Mortality and Major Adverse Cardiac Event (MACE) rates were analyzed.

People’s daily social activities have been altered during the pandemic since they carry risk for contracting COVID-19. Prior to the pandemic, drinking socially has been the highlight of many college students’ lives. This study explores how COVID-19 has impacted college students’ drinking and social activities. We examined samples from a large, southern, public university both prior (N=65, Mean age=22.15, SD=2.03, 78.87% female) and during COVID-19 (N=47, Mean age=22.42, SD=1.64, 75.47% female).
