The purpose of this study was to investigate past experiences with gender barriers among male student registered nurse anesthetists (SRNAs) and Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) in their educational and professional careers. Men have been underrepresented in the nursing profession in modern history. To date, no research has been conducted on the gender barriers faced by men in nurse anesthesia. This is a descriptive, quantitative study using a survey methodology. The purpose of this study was to determine if the healthcare needs of homeless young adults from the client, shelter staff, and shelter healthcare provider’s perspectives. Data was collected via focus group with homeless unaccompanied young adults (n=4), and an online survey with shelter staff and healthcare staff (n=8) of The Night Ministry (TNM) and Ignite Promise. The focus group was recorded, transcribed, and coded for themes. Inductive analysis revealed themes focused on improving the quality of services provided. PF is one of the most common foot and ankle problems. People with PF experience mild to severe pain that interferes moderately with activities of daily living (ADL). Due to chronic pain that interferes with ADL, people with PF often use non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications and/or acetaminophen. These medications alleviate pain but cannot eliminate it. Additionally, with chronic use, these medications can cause well-known adverse side effects. Abstract

Problem: Inaccurate and incomplete pressure injury (PrI) assessment and documentation leads to inaccurate reporting of PrI quality reporting measures to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Inaccurate, incomplete documentation of pressure injuries and wounds adversely affects the quality of care, financial reimbursement, and hospital reputation as well as increasing the risk of litigation to medical providers. Barriers to accurate and complete documentation by the nurses were inaccuracy in identification of PrIs Stage 1 or greater and knowing what and where to document the information in the electronic medical record.

Problem: The DNR No POLST project aims to increase the number of physician orders for life-sustaining treatment (POLST) forms completed on hospitalized patients who are designated DNR status. Currently, there is no process for ensuring completion of advanced care planning (ACP) materials, including the POLST form, on designated DNR patients throughout the hospital. Ensuring patients receive a complete and accurate POLST prior to discharge decreases the chance of unwanted overtreatment.

We examined the factors associated with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) screening and developed a HIV screening prevalence surface map using spatial interpolation techniques to identify the geographical areas with the highest and lowest rates of HIV screening in Mozambique. We analyzed the cross-sectional 2015 Mozambique AIDS Indicator Surveys with an analytic sample of 12,995 participants. Analyses were conducted on SPSS-21, STATA-14, and R freeware 3.5.3. We adjusted for the sample design and population weights. Results indicated that 52.5% of Mozambicans had undergone HIV screening. Problem: At a Northern California hospital (NCH), there is a current effort to ensure the perioperative patients are satisfied with their care. These patients receive the Outpatient and Ambulatory Surgery Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (OAS CAHPS) survey after surgery. The scores regarding discharge process and patient knowledge over the last five quarters have fluctuated between the 10th percentile and the 36th percentile. NCH relies on patient satisfaction scores to better serve their members.

Problem: Surgical site infections (SSIs) account for 20% of all hospital-acquired infections (HAIs). Performance of consistent, accurate hand hygiene practices by healthcare workers is the most effective means of preventing infection, yet the average compliance rates remain low. The preoperative (PREOP) unit carries tremendous responsibility for decreasing each patient's risk for SSI by adequately following the World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines for hand hygiene. The PREOP remains at a low average hand hygiene compliance rate of 69%, with decreased consistency, frequency, and knowledge deficit of hygiene practices. The Cardiac Procedure Unit (CPU) of a large medical center in California recently received a low HCAHPS (CMS, 2019) score of one star (out of five) in the area of medication communication.
