Recent data in 28 U.S. states revealed that opioid use during pregnancy had increased by four times since 2014, going from 1.5 to 6.5 per 1,000 admissions. The use of opioids during pregnancy is dangerous to the mother and developing fetus, greatly increasing the risk for maternal death, miscarriage, and premature birth. The increase in the number of women with opioid abuse disorder (OUD) is reflected by a fivefold increase of infants born with neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS), a withdrawal syndrome from opioids. Due to the nursing shortage in Sri Lanka, patients need informal caregivers, known as bystanders, to help provide patient care. This study described bystanders’ perspectives on informal, hospital-based care to bedridden patients with cancer in Sri Lanka. In this qualitative descriptive study, 17 bystanders at Apeksa/Cancer Hospital, Sri Lanka, were recruited using snowballing sampling. Data were collected through telephone interviews and analyzed using content and thematic analyses. Findings showed that paid and unpaid bystanders cover all caregiving tasks with minimum interaction with nurses. Unpaid bystanders described the need for same-sex bystanders and additional help with patients’ mobilization and specialized care. …

Peripheral neuropathy is a significant co-morbidity for patients with diabetes and as early as 1969, metformin was linked to reductions in vitamin B12, leading to deficiency. Vitamin B12 deficiency causes increased levels of homocysteine and methylmalonyl-CoA which are toxic to the nervous system and therefore can contribute to demyelination. Since rice is often cooked in many countries with different types of ingredients or seasonings, the surface colors of traditional rice meal items vary across cultural backgrounds. This study aimed to determine whether consumer perception, acceptance, willingness to eat, and emotional responses toward cooked rice samples could differ with their surface color cues. Milled rice was cooked with one of three food colorants: yellow, orange, and green, with milled (white) and un-milled (brown) rice cooked without colorants used as respective test and filler samples. This Evidence-Based Practice project (EBP) addressed the question: Do patients with a psychiatric in-patient diagnosis of suicide ideation, who after discharge self-elect outpatient Cognitive Behavioral Therapy-Suicide Prevention (CBT-SP) treatment over a 6-week time frame, reduce the likelihood of hospital readmission for suicidal ideation vs. patients who decline CBT-SP treatment and elect Treatment as Usual (TAU)? Risk Factors Contributing To The Development Of Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia Among Preterm Infants, Caitlin E. Bradley

Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) is a pulmonary disease that affects infants born < 32 weeks gestational age. Despite improved survival among preterm infants, the incidence and severity of BPD has not improved, rather the features and severity of BPD have evolved (Abman et al., 2017). BPD is a disease that has significant impact on the outcomes of preterm infants, including poor pulmonary and neurodevelopmental outcomes (Abman et al., 2017). Since its identification in 1967, and many iterations to its defining criteria, healthcare practitioners are unable to accurately predict infants’ risk of developing BPD. Further, there is significant family, social, and economic impacts from BPD. This dissertation research examined risk factors for BPD, as identified in a mid-range theory developed from a systematic review of the literature. This mid-range theory is framed using the Neuman Systems Model (NSM) (2011). The research utilized a secondary analysis of data from a database including a cohort of infants born at < 32 weeks’ gestation (n=455) treated at Boston Children’s Hospital. Findings from this research demonstrated that multiple intrapersonal risk factors are associated with development of BPD and the grades of BPD severity including gestational age, birth weight, surfactant administration, necrotizing enterocolitis, infections, mechanical ventilation duration, and patent ductus arteriosus. This research adds to the current body of research by demonstrating specific risks associated with BPD. Findings of this research could be used to identify maternal infant dyads that would benefit from early therapy(s) to reduce BPD risk.
