Hispanics who are registered nurses (RNs) are more likely to enter the nursing profession through an associate degree nursing program and are less likely than any other racial/ethnic groups to complete advanced degrees. The purpose of this study is to explain the relationship between motivators and barriers associated with the intent to complete a bachelor’s degree in nursing (BSN) for Hispanic associate degree nurses (ADNs). Health-care providers (HCPs) are vulnerable to occupational health hazards, including dirty needle-stick injuries (DNSIs), which increase the risk for infection with HIV and other blood-borne pathogens. This study examines the perceptions of nurses and nurse practitioners who work in various health care settings regarding HIV-risk and DNSIs, in order to ascertain how these perceptions inform their decision-making regarding their health and nursing practice. I utilize a phenomenological approach to analyze the lived reality and embodiment of the DNSI experience by HCPs. INTRODUCTION: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is associated with an increased risk of dementia. Individual epidemiological studies have controlled for several confounders of the relationship between PTSD and increased dementia risk, yet particular risk factors underlying this relationship have not been determined. This systematic review protocol aims to identify risk and protective factors of dementia among adults with PTSD.

Midwifery is a new profession in Bangladesh. Diploma-prepared midwives were first deployed in 2018. Recent studies suggest that newly qualified midwives in Bangladesh may not be able to fully perform their midwifery role due to a number of complex factors. This paper describes a pilot study of a midwifery audit undertaken in 2019 by the Bangladesh Midwifery Society, supported by the Royal College of Midwives. These two organisations are in a formal twinning partnership funded by UNFPA Bangladesh with support from UK-Aid, Sweden and Canada. Individuals with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) struggle with effective self-management, contributing to poor health outcomes and costly health care. More research is needed to understand the factors influencing COPD self-management better in order to improve outcomes and reduce health care costs for those living with this prevalent chronic illness. The purpose of this article is to describe factors influencing community-dwelling adults’ COPD self-management. In-depth interviews were conducted with 28 people living with COPD. Anesthesia Machine Failure: A Case Study, Molly Condit, Paula Hafeman

This article examines successful management of an anesthesia machine failure with the Draeger (or Dräger) Apollo (Draeger Inc) anesthesia workstation. Approximately 45 minutes into the case, while the patient was under general anesthesia and mechanical ventilation, the anesthesia machine failed to achieve positive pressurization following a high-pressure alarm. Despite multiple maneuvers, the issue did not resolve until the machine was manually powered off and on at the main power switch. This case report emphasizes the importance of always having a backup means of patient ventilation and anesthesia administration.

Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) remain a growing global health issue and sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) is no exception. Using secondary data obtained from the World Bank on 48 SSA countries, we describe the trends in the proportionate mortalities attributed to NCDs in SSA between 2000 and 2016. The baseline proportionate mortalities attributed to NCDs in SSA increased from 22.49% in 2000 to 33.69% in 2016, representing about 11% increase. The trend was replicated across the low-, middle-, and high-income countries in SSA. The highest change in the NCD mortalities in low-income SSA countries was seen in Eritrea where NCD mortalities increased from …

Background: Reports on a systematic evaluation of the impact of antiretroviral therapy(ART) on patients’ hospitalisation in Sub Saharan Africa (SSA) and Tanzania, in particular, are scarce. We aimed at documenting the trends of hospital admissions at Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH) following scale-up of free access to ART in Tanzania.
