Background: Sexual trauma, including rape and childhood sexual abuse, takes a toll on the survivor emotionally and physically. With the invasive procedures, physical exposure and feelings of loss of control related to childbirth, the survivor may become triggered and become retraumatized. Background: Opioids are among the most effective drugs for pain management. However, the course of pain management in opioid-tolerant individuals is complicated. An integrative literature review was conducted.

Objectives: The purpose of this integrative literature review is to establish the efficacy of using opioids to treat opioid-tolerant patients and the perspectives of patients and healthcare professionals.

Method: An integrative literature review was used along with Kolcaba’s comfort theory to determine common themes in the literature.

Seizure patients admitted to an Epilepsy Monitoring Unit located within an academic tertiary medical center have a high potential to impact patient safety. As a result, a unit based team identified a need for a higher level of training for both their staff and float companions to ensure safe and standardized care for this group of patients.

Introduction: Despite a reduction in poor outcomes in recent decades, spontaneous subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH) remains associated with severe disability and high mortality rates. The exact extent of these outcomes is however unknown in Africa. This study aimed to determine the mortality and functional outcomes of patients with SAH in Kenya.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective multicentre cross-sectional study involving patients admitted with SAH to three referral hospitals in Nairobi. All patients with a confirmed (primary) discharge diagnosis of first-time SAH between January 2009 and November 2017 were included (n = 158). Admission and retention of qualified nursing students are essential in meeting the demands of a rapidly changing health care environment and nursing shortage. The purpose of this exploratory correlational study was to determine the relationship between student performance in quantitative pre-requisite coursework and student performance in upper division nursing coursework in order to identify students at-risk for attrition. A series of descriptive and correlational analyses were conducted using pre-existing institutional data. A moderate relationship existed among the chemistry II and first-year upper division nursing courses (r = .21 to r = .40). These results suggest that prerequisite chemistry course …

Coolsculpting Or Cryolipolysis, A Guide For Primary Care Providers, Miryam Harper, Jane Lassetter

A desire for the ideal body image has influenced development of a non-surgical body shaping procedure known as CoolSculpting, or cryolipolysis. The purpose of this clinical feature is to inform nurse practitioners regarding the risks and benefits of cryolipolysis so they can educate their patients. Cryolipolysis is a safe, effective method of reducing small areas of unwanted fat. Side effects are minimal and include pain, redness, bruising, and swelling. Results are seen within twelve weeks, but long-term effects are unknown. There are contraindications, and it is relatively expensive; however, it may be a safer option than invasive surgery.

As the number of APRNs continues to increase, thoughtful consideration within organizations is needed to address leadership specific to this population of healthcare professionals. The goal of this quality improvement initiative was to generate quantitative data to determine if the formation of a Pediatric Advance Practice Nursing Council in a children’s hospital was successful in improving APRN communication, collegiality, and networking. Thoracic surgery via video assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) began in the early 1990s, as a minimally invasive alternative to open thoracotomy for performing lobectomies, wedge resections, and segmentectomies. It initially showed improved morbidity and mortality, decreased pain, and decreased length of stay when compared to traditional open thoracotomy (Zhang & Gao, 2015). To its detriment, VATS has a steep learning curve and manipulation of instruments has been described as non-intuitive. These devices have been advertised as safer alternatives to conventional cigarettes and a tool for smoking cessation by their manufacturers regardless of inadequate safety data (Kalkhoran, 2016). An amniotic fluid embolism (AFE) occurs when amniotic fluid enters maternal circulation, causing a physical obstruction or an anaphylactoid reaction, both of which are often detrimental to the parturient patient. This paper reviews a series of studies to examine the incidence, risk factors, presentation, and management of an AFE in the healthcare setting. Diagnosing an AFE remains difficult as a universal diagnostic criterion does not exist (aside from in reported research); thus, its identification is often made when another differential diagnosis fails to manifest.
