At a large academic tertiary medical center, an Integrated Medication Assisted Treatment (IMAT) program has been established for those medically stable inpatients with an addiction diagnosis. Over a four month period, this program had experienced a decline in attendance and a quality improvement project was initiated is to better understand the barriers to attendance and institute a process that would reverse the decline.

A goal was established to improve attendance by medically stable patients that have consented to participate to a minimum of 50%.

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are the most common type of healthcare associated infections. Seventy five percent are related to indwelling urinary catheters. These infections come with increased morbidity and mortality risk. A team of intensive care providers at a large academic tertiary medical center initiated a quality improvement project to reduce the number of CAUTIs.

A team in a large academic tertiary teaching hospital set about leveraging their daily managing system (DMS) to attain improvement in their institution’s safety. The trauma service in a large academic tertiary medical center admits a large proportion of patients with the secondary diagnosis of alcohol use disorder. Given the successful use of phenobarbital in the critical care unit for withdrawal prophylaxis and treatment of acute withdrawal, a quality improvement project was established to create and implement guidelines for the non ICU patient.

Prevalence:

Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) is the most prevalent postoperative complication occuring within 24 hours of surgery.

Risk Factors:

Adults at a higher risk of PONV include:

• Female
• History of PONV, motion sickness and/or gastroparesis
• Postoperative opioid recipient
• Volatile anesthetic and/or nitrous oxide administration intraoperatively

Updated clinical guidelines and professional practice standards for pediatric post-anesthesia care call for the use of capnography until the patient is awake. The purpose of this project was to champion the implementation of capnography in the pediatric post-anesthesia care unit at the project site. Monitoring capnography in addition to pulse oximetry for all pediatric post-anesthesia patients until awake was the practice change implemented. The aim of this study was to examine the relationships between power, self-health patterning, and quality of life in older adults with chronic illness using Rogers’ science of unitary human beings and Barrett’s theory of power. A cross-sectional, correlational design was used to examine the variables in a sample of approximately 100 older adults with chronic illness. This study revealed that power, self-health patterning, and quality of life are related to one another and that both power and self-health patterning are associated with enhanced quality of life.

Background

It is essential that nurses be prepared to provide quality care for patients with diabetes, a common condition today. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of a high-fidelity simulation on traditional prelicensure nursing students' knowledge and performance related to care of the diabetic patient.

Methods

This multisite, multimeasure study used a purposive, quasiexperimental [sic] pretest-posttest design.

Results

Simulation positively impacted performance change scores. Pretest scores were positively associated with simulation scores and posttest scores.

Conclusions

The findings from this study support the use of high-fidelity simulation to improve care of the diabetic patient.
