With older adults making up about 14.5% of the U.S. population, polypharmacy may be an unintended consequence of adhering to clinical practice guidelines (Kim & Luck Parish, 2017). Effective polypharmacy interventions are needed in the primary care setting to increase prescribing safety and lower the risk of adverse drug events among older adults. The application of the Beers criteria, in conjunction with a brown bag medication reconciliation event, was initiated as focused interventions for a private primary practice without electronic health records. Outcomes included medication reduction, identification of possible inappropriate medication, decrease of medication dosages, and identification of duplicate medication. …

Sepsis, a life-threatening infection killing 270,000 yearly, is a concern to health care providers, policy makers, and patients due to its high volume and increasing cost. Patients older than 64 years have a higher occurrence of sepsis and greater mortality risk. The Surviving Sepsis Guidelines (SSG) recommends the use of the three-hour bundle that standardizes care to decrease cost, morbidity, and mortality. The three-hour bundle includes two treatments, intravenous fluids and antibiotics, and two tests, blood cultures and lactic acid level. Prolonged mechanical ventilation in cardiac surgery patients has been associated with increased hospital stay, increased intensive care unit (ICU) length of stay, higher health care costs, and higher morbidity from atelectasis, intrapulmonary shunting and pneumonia. Early extubation of post-operative cardiac surgery patients has been associated with shorter ICU and overall hospital stays, reduced mortality, decreased resource use, and is safe and effective in elderly patients with no increased risk of reintubation. Breastfeeding is the gold standard for infant nutrition, providing benefits to both infants and mothers. According to the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB), a mother’s breastfeeding intention is directly related to the following antecedents: attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control. Stress and anxiety are increasing in college students, especially in nursing students who complete didactic and clinical courses concurrently. Nursing students report feeling overwhelmed, with distress affecting academic performance and balance of school and personal demands. Mindfulness is an evidence-based method of reducing human suffering due to troubling conditions such as pain, chronic illness, or psychological issues including stress and anxiety. This paper addresses the state of the science of mindfulness and details the current mental health concerns of college students, specifically nursing students. The purpose of the evidence-based practice innovation project (EPIP) is to address uncontrolled diabetes by implementing an evidence-based shared medical appointment (SMA) intervention which based on the body of the evidence will help improve diabetes outcomes. A pilot implementation and retrospective chart review were conducted. Data was collected on outcome indicators such as blood pressure, lipid values, body mass index, A1C, and knowledge. The results of a pilot SMA implementation revealed that patients who participated in the weekly SMA saw an improvement in post-mean values compared to pre-mean values. Mean A1c dropped to 7.0% from 7.11%; systolic blood pressure improved …

This project examines the ability of mechanical compression devices, such as the popular LUCAS device, to produce the desired outcomes of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) when compared to manual chest compression performed by a CPR certified individual. The purpose of the quasi-experimental study was to examine the effect of a community educational offering on attendees’ knowledge of osteoporosis as measured by the Osteoporosis Knowledge Test. A statistical significant difference was noted between the pretest and post-test means (p = .000). The findings demonstrate that a brief educational session can increase knowledge regarding osteoporosis. Development of partnerships with community populations to provide opportunities for health education can be valuable in promoting healthy behaviors.
