This paper discusses the topic of mental illness stigma and treatment in Uganda as explored through internship in the Social Work Department at Butabika National Referral Mental Hospital. The objectives of this project were to complete a meaningful internship while exploring causes of mental illness in Uganda, contradictions between traditional and modern approaches to treatment, and the affect of stigma on mental well-being. The internship included a total of 120 hours at Butabika Hospital. Individual research using documentary and literature review methods accompanied the internship. Young women between the ages of 18 to 24 experience disproportionally high rates of negative sexual and reproductive health outcomes. Inadequate and inaccurate fertility knowledge can hinder a young woman’s self-care abilities in managing her sexual and reproductive health. There is no validated instrument to assess young women’s fertility knowledge. The primary purpose of this study is to develop and evaluate the psychometric properties of the MU-fertility knowledge assessment scale (MU-FKAS) for young women. This study compares psychometric properties of the Fagerström Test for Nicotine Dependence (FTND) and Autonomy over Tobacco Scale (AUTOS), which are measures of nicotine dependence. This study is a secondary analysis of data obtained from a smoking cessation study conducted with 49 Korean American women. We compared the FTND and AUTOS assessed at baseline regarding their internal consistency reliability and concurrent and predictive validities. The AUTOS outperformed the FTND in reliability and concurrent validity by yielding a higher Cronbach’s alpha and having significant relationships with smoking-related variables such as age at smoking onset, perceived risks of quitting, and self-efficacy in …

The goal of this QI initiative was to decrease inappropriate antibiotic for the treatment of pediatric upper respiratory infection (URI) in the retail clinic setting. The approach included the use of a protocol to treat viral upper respiratory illness, a visual aid decision-making tool for guideline adherence, prescription pad for nonprescription remedies, and shared decision-making techniques for providers to involve patients and parents in management plans regarding nonprescription remedies, supportive treatment, and signs and symptoms that would warrant a return visit. Lack of medication reconciliation at the point of transitions between skilled nursing facilities/nursing homes (SNF/NHs) and acute care hospitals (ACHs) is a common point of origin for medical errors that cause harm to patients. The goal of this quality improvement initiative was to improve medication reconciliation at the point of transition from the SNF/NH to the ACH which in turn would reduce medication errors, adverse drug events, and medication-induced injury to the vulnerable elderly population. The Time Driven Activity Based Costing (TDABC) measurement system, a model used in the business arena, can capture clinical processes and costs that other costing models often overlook. Use of this system permitted tying costs to time and resources and identified areas of inefficiency such as depleted supplies and health care and emergency supplies placed inconveniently. A multidisciplinary team developed an anesthesia checklist for use in a remote cardiopulmonary laboratory. The compliance rate for checklist completion was approximately 85%. The purpose of this project was to mentor undergraduate nursing students through the entire research process while they worked on a study to evaluate undergraduate and graduate nursing students’ and practicing nurse practitioners’ clinical experience and awareness of safe electronic health record (EHR) practices utilizing the SAFER guide checklists. This project provided multiple mentoring and learning opportunities for the undergraduate students who worked on this project. Nurse practitioners are on the front lines providing parental education regarding vaccines. Some reasons for vaccine hesitancy include the potential common mild problems of vaccine administration, such as pain and/or elevated temperature. According to research, prophylactic administration of an antipyretic/analgesic medication, such as acetaminophen, reduces common mild problems related to vaccines when administered before or at the time of vaccination. Additionally, the evidence that prophylactic administration of antipyretic/analgesic medication decreases antibody response to vaccinations is insufficient at this time.
