Preoperative Assessment Clinic Reduces Total Joint Arthroplasty Case Cancellations, Angelica Adriano

The purpose of this evidence-based project was to reduce the rate of elective total joint arthroplasty case cancellations by implementing a nurse practitioner-led Preoperative Assessment Clinic (POAC), in the orthopedic department of a major southern California Veterans Affairs (VA) hospital. Retrospective data collected in a 12-month time period showed a surgical cancellation rate of 22%. Reasons for delays or cancellations included: medical instability, abnormal labs and/or studies, patients requiring referral to specialists, dental clearance, patient-initiated cancellations, and active infections. The POAC reduced the rate of case cancellations at 1 year to 17% and at 2 years to 9%. Lost revenue …

Background: Although tuberculosis (TB) morbidity and mortality have decreased in recent decades, challenges exist regarding disproportionate distributions of TB among specific populations and geographic areas. Inconsistent local health department (LHD) funding for TB programs poses difficulties for LHDs to sustain resources and personnel that predisposes communities to risks of future outbreaks of TB and drug-resistant TB diseases.

Purpose: This study examined relationships between annual TB incidence rates and LHD expenditures on TB-related services to elucidate potential impacts of TB incidence on LHD TB spending.

This disorder is diagnosed in an individual who presents the common signs and symptoms of anemia along with consistently low clinical markers of stored iron. Study goals were to explore maternal perceptions of possible ways to reduce infant mortality in Kalamazoo County, with specific regards to the infant mortality rates of non-Hispanic African American babies versus non-Hispanic Caucasian babies. Two focus groups were conducted of voluntary, anonymous, participants from the YWCA domestic violence shelter and clients of home visiting services provided by the Kalamazoo County Department of Health and Community Services. Current evidence supports the use of standardized patient (SP) encounters to assist students in learning therapeutic communication skills. Nursing burnout and inappropriate nursing workload have been linked to increased risk of urinary tract infection, respiratory infections, decreased patient satisfaction, decreased quality and safety of care, and increased mortality. In previous bodies of work, researchers have not evaluated clinicians’ treatment of AVRS and ABRS by examining the impact of a national education toolkit and a decision tree tool. It is the intent of this scholarly project to determine whether an educational program based on a national education toolkit plus a decision tree tool offered to health care providers in a Middle Tennessee walk-in clinic, promoted an increase in treatment guideline adherence when diagnosing and treating acute bacterial rhinosinusitis and acute viral rhinosinusitis.

Purpose: The purpose of the study is 1) to assess the effect of dietary self-monitoring on weight loss in a population of Caucasian and African-American women and men; and 2) to determine if there is a difference in African Americans’ and Caucasians’ use of self-monitoring in weight loss.

Review of the Literature: Previous studies demonstrated increased weight loss with dietary self-monitoring; however, these studies’ samples are 70-80% Caucasian women and cannot be generalized to African-Americans or men. Studies confirming the effectiveness of dietary intake self-monitoring in non-Caucasian women and men are needed.

Highly contagious in nature, it is estimated that about 50 million people are infected each year, and approximately 300,000 deaths occur worldwide (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2012). Oncology nurses witness terminal illness, death, physical, and emotional suffering which increases their risk of developing compassion fatigue. The purpose of this evidence-based practice (EBP) project was to increase awareness of compassion fatigue among oncology nurses by providing them with knowledge, effective coping skills, and self-care management skills. If every infant were breastfed within an hour of birth, exclusively breastfed until six months, and given breastmilk up to two years, almost 800,000 lives would be saved annually (who, 2014). Nationally, breastfeeding rates drop significantly from three to six months. A search of literature yielded significant evidence as fathers for facilitators to increase breastfeeding rates. Caffeine is widely used to treat apnea of prematurity. Here, we evaluated the efficacy of early caffeine (1-2 DOL) in decreasing the incidence of adverse neonatal outcomes. Methods. A retrospective cohort was used to compare the neonatal morbidity of 150 preterm neonates with gestational age ≤29 weeks. Infants were divided into 3 groups based on the initiation timing of caffeine therapy; (1) early caffeine (1-2 DOL), (2) late caffeine (3–7 DOL), and (3) very late caffeine (≥8 DOL). Results. The neonatal outcomes of early caffeine were comparable with those of the late caffeine group. Moreover, when comparing the neonatal morbidity …
