Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a common medical problem that affects 200,000-400,000 people in the United States each year (Anthony, 2013, p. 95). Nurses must be aware of the potential for DVT risk from pediatric to geriatric populations. The risk of DVT is associated with venous stasis, endothelial injury, and hypercoagulability (McNamara, 2014). These risks occur in both healthy people and those with disease states. The development of a DVT may lead to a life-threatening pulmonary embolism (PE). Understanding the pathophysiology of DVT formation can help nurses assess risk and assist in prevention. Zika virus infection, a mosquito-borne flavivirus that causes febrile illness associated with rash, has been rapidly emerging in the Western Hemisphere over the past few months. The virus was rarely identified until outbreaks occurred on Yap Island in the Federated States of Micronesia in 2007, Fresh Polynesia in 2013, and Easter Island in 2014 (Chen & Hamer, 2016). The virus was initially detected in Brazil in 2015, in the northeast, and was subsequently identified in other states and several South American countries, including Colombia, Ecuador, Suriname, Venezuela, French Guyana, and Paraguay. Osteochondromas are the most common neoplasm of the bone. Two percent of these tumors grow in the chest wall, and can cause severe complications such as pneumothorax. Costal exostoses can cause traumatic pneumothorax through puncture, laceration, or friction from chest wall movement during breathing (Kameda et al., 2016; Imai et al., 2014). The consequent change in intrapleural pressure and possible lung collapse is an urgent medical situation (ENA, 2014) that the advanced practice nurse should diagnose and treat quickly. This poster serves to summarize the pathophysiology of penumothorax caused by osteochondroma.

Type 1 hepatorenal syndrome is kidney failure that occurs in advanced cirrhosis (Fagundes & Ginès, 2012). It is characterized by a, “significant reduction in creatinine clearance within 1-2 weeks of presentation” (Bacon, 2015). Patients that develop this condition have a median survival rate of one month (Dameron, 2011). Vasodilation leads to decreased perfusion to the kidneys and thus kidney injury (Boyer et al., 2011). Hypogonadism is one of the most common endocrinologic syndromes seen in clinical practice. Testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) is one possible treatment option for men with hypogonadism. When TRT is a viable treatment option, routes of administration, effectiveness, patient compliance, cost, and potential side effects should be carefully considered by the Nurse Practitioner. In the United States TRT is available via intramuscular, nasal, buccal, and topical routes. All transdermal testosterone is the most effective when regulating testosterone levels. Depotestosterone, an injectable form of testosterone, promotes patient compliance, is considered safe, and is affordable. Nurse Practitioners should initiate TRT with Depotestosterone.

First identified in 1992 in Japan, Takotsubu Cardiomyopathy is a stress-induced cardiomyopathy that presents identically to ST-segment elevated myocardial infarction (STEMI). Termed Broken Heart Syndrome for its correlation to stressful events such as the loss of a spouse or family member, Takotsubo is a complex phenomenon in the world of cardiac care. Over-saturation of endogenous catecholamines is the most popular explanation for this clinical condition, but other explanations such as parasympathetic nervous system dysfunction and coronary artery vasospasm are also revealing themselves as causative factors.

One size does not fit all for breast cancer screening. Early detection and prevention are most effective for those most at risk. Several United States organizations recommend offering annual screening breast magnetic resonance imaging in addition to mammography for women with > 20% lifetime risk for breast cancer using models that take extensive family history into account. The purpose of this article is to help nurse practitioners make critical decisions about breast cancer screening and referrals to genetic services for women based on their lifetime risk for breast cancer. Background and Purpose: The purpose of this study was to collect information regarding healthcare worker (HCW) vaccination policies in Utah family practice clinics. Methods: The study was conducted in Utah family practice clinics in the most densely populated counties in the state and was a cross-sectional descriptive design. Data were collected from 155 family practice clinic managers. Analyses included frequencies and percentages for quantitative items and a content analysis for open-ended items. Conclusions: HCWs are employed in environments where infectious diseases can be easily spread from person to person, thus, vaccinations can be instrumental in protecting the health of HCWs …

A recent influx of patients undergoing the transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) procedure sparked interest in the pathophysiologic process of Aortic Stenosis (AS), especially in the geriatric population. AS is mostly asymptomatic until later stages of the disease, which delays treatment and intervention leading to poor outcomes and prognosis, especially for those who are not surgical candidates. Purpose: Diabetes self-management education and home visits have been found to improve clinical outcomes in individuals living with diabetes. The purpose of this pilot project was to evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of conducting self-management education in patients' homes.

Methods: Baseline biometric data was collected from a cohort of adult patients with diabetes. Home visits to 19 patients were conducted by doctoral students from Rutgers University School of Nursing. The visits included knowledge assessment, review of foods in the home, diabetes self-management education, and teaching the proper use of monitoring tools such as the glucometer and blood pressure monitor. Schizophrenia and bipolar disorder are severe psychiatric disorders that are frequently associated with persistent symptoms and significant dysfunction. While there are a multitude of psychopharmacologic agents are available for treatment of these illnesses, suboptimal response and significant adverse consequences limit their utility. Cariprazine is a new, novel antipsychotic medication with dopamine D2 and D3 partial agonist effects. Its safety and efficacy have been investigated in acute psychosis of schizophrenia, bipolar mania, bipolar depression, and unipolar depression. Efficacy has been demonstrated in schizophrenia and mania. It is unclear if cariprazine is effective in depression associated with unipolar or bipolar illness. Adverse …

Uniform deposition of nanofibers in the massive electrospinning process is critical in the industrial applications of nanofibers. Tip-Induced Electrospinning (TIE) is a cost-effective large-scale nanofiber-manufacturing method, but it has poor deposition uniformity. An auxiliary conductive electrode connected to the emitting electrode was introduced to improve the deposition uniformity of the nanofibers. The effects of the auxiliary electrode shape, the tilted angles and the position of the boat-like electrode on the electric field distribution, the diameter of the nanofibers, the jet control and the deposition uniformity were explored by using finite element analysis of the electric field and experiments. Through the lens of a study exploring dementia care partnering, the purpose of this methods article is to focus on the role of artifacts and embodied data in data collection. In addition, it illustrates how to use a range of data collecting methods. The article identifies benefits of additional data collecting methods to research and care. These include the need to expand data collecting methods beyond spoken word, integrate a range of data collecting approaches into research courses across disciplines, increase support of qualitative research, and advocate for greater inclusivity in research. Purpose: To identify barriers and discuss strategies for recruitment of older Chinese immigrants into clinical research studies.

Methods: A systematic review was conducted using Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA). PubMed, WEB of Science, CINAHL Plus, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials were searched from 2001 to 2014. Empirical studies with Chinese immigrants aged 60 or older were identified and analyzed. Numerical analysis, such as calculation of response rates as indexes for recruitment outcomes, was conducted. Content analyses for recruitment barriers were abstracted.

Results: Thirteen studies of 4753 subjects were analyzed. Response rates ranged from …

The pathophysiology of heart failure is further discussed identifying how heart failure is classified and how each compensatory mechanism of heart failure leads to further disease progression. Implications for nursing care are discussed including goals of treatment, medication regimens, and patient education on disease management.
