Moral distress is a key issue in the healthcare work environment. This course will explore situations in which health care providers may find themselves that result in moral distress; situations can arise from patients, their families, co-workers, or the organization. Providing quality, evidence based practice is many times limited to doing what is allowed per protocols or payors, and not always what is best for that given situation. Included in this presentation are ways to affirm what is felt, assess sources of distress, contemplate risks and benefits of action, and prepare for action.

'The Heart of Children's Mercy' garners hospital's second trophy for programming excellence.

Once again, Inside Pediatrics has been recognized with a prestigious Emmy award for outstanding programming by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. At the awards event Saturday night, the fifth episode (titled “The Heart of Children’s Mercy”) of the show’s second season won for Best Public/Current/Community Affairs Program or Special.

Last year, Season 1 of Inside Pediatrics won an Emmy in the same category.

As the population ages and the incidence of chronic diseases and lifestyle-related conditions rises, nurses are increasingly required to provide care for people with a range of chronic (long-term) conditions. The healthcare needs of patients are often complicated by comorbid conditions. Nurses deliver healthcare in the context of the patient’s medical conditions, treatment regimens, the healthcare system, and the individual’s socioeconomic, personal and family factors, which may include the challenges of social isolation and geographic distance. Although the herpes zoster (HZ) vaccine to decrease the incidence of Shingles was licensed for use in 2008, little coverage for HZ vaccination has occurred and stands nationally at 16%. At a targeted nursing home and assisted living facility, a protocol for including HZ along with state-mandated vaccinations was devised and used in screening incoming residents. Baseline data from chart reviews (n=122) showed that despite treatments given for the infection in the preceding 12 months, no vaccinations had occurred. During a 6-month implementation period, all new residents meeting eligibility criteria were offered the HZ vaccination. In this period, four residents …

Enrollment in registered nurse-bachelor of science in nursing (RN-BSN) degree completion programs have increased in the last several years. Due to this increase, many programs have begun to offer their RN-BSN programs completely online or in a hybrid format. There are significant limitations among the few prior studies that have examined the development and implementation of interprofessional education (IPE) experiences to accommodate a high volume of students from several disciplines and from different institutions. The present study addressed these gaps by seeking to determine the extent to which a single, large, inter-institutional, and IPE simulation event improves student perceptions of the importance and relevance of IPE and simulation as a learning modality, whether there is a difference in students’ perceptions among disciplines, and whether the results are reproducible. Objective

The purpose of this study was to identify core journals and other types of literature cited in four major pediatric nursing journals and to characterize coverage of these resources in major bibliographic databases. The study was part of the “Mapping the Literature of Nursing Project” of the Medical Library Association's Nursing and Allied Health Resource Section. It updates a similar analysis published in 2006 and determines whether citation patterns have changed over time.

Methods

Attrition can be a serious problem for nursing programs and students. Loss of students during a nursing program or through NCLEX failure is a waste of resources and results in inefficiency in the production of nurses for the workforce. Using data from 341 students admitted over a three-year period, the goal of this study was to determine which factors best predicted student success in a Baccalaureate of Science in Nursing (BSN) Program. These factors were then used to develop an admission formula which was tested retroactively to determine its ability to differentiate between successful and non-successful students. There are many approaches to conceptualizing and measuring the well-being of children. These indices vary considerably depending on the goal of the scale. However, all of these indices share similar characteristics in that they are multi-dimensional and take into account the complexity of children’s lives. One of the best known of these measures is the Annie E. Casey Foundation’s national KIDS COUNT Data Book (http://www.aecf.org/resources/the-2016-kids-countdata-book/). The rigorous educational experience of nursing school can cause stress and anxiety for nursing students. Identifying techniques to help decrease stress and anxiety during a nursing program can be beneficial to the students’ overall health and mental well-being as well as to their academic success. A quasi-experimental design was utilized to examine if a peer evaluation technique (PET) during clinical skill practice sessions decreases anxiety prior to the students’ skill performance evaluation with nursing faculty.
