Connecticut's Elderly Population: An In-Depth Analysis Of Current And Future Trends In Elder Care, With A Focus On Dementia And Cognitive Decline, Emily J. Snodgrass
Honors Scholar Theses
The aging population in Connecticut currently represents ~15% of the state’s population but is anticipated to rapidly increase over the next 20 years. My thesis is an examination of the types of interventions and programs currently available for elderly persons with memory impairment and cognitive decline, as well as the challenges associated with caring for a larger elderly population. Data collected from interviews with CT healthcare and research professionals representative of the diverse specialties of aging together with an analysis of current research literature are used to demonstrate the importance of continued research and expansion of appropriate and accessible services …

Background. Collaboration between occupational therapists and nurses is key to a positive prognosis for their patients. Currently, there is a gap in the research on professional relationships between occupational therapists and registered nurses in acute care settings.
Purpose. To examine interprofessional collaboration between registered nurses and occupational therapy in an acute care setting.
Methods. A phenomenological, qualitative design with use of semi-structured interviews was used. Interviewees were four occupational therapists and four registered nurses who currently work in acute care settings in Northern California and were recruited through a snowball, convenience and purposive sampling. Themes and subthemes that emerged from …

Based on current literature, oral health in long-term care (LTC) facilities is frequently of low priority and does not follow evidence-based best practices. Poor oral health reduces the quality of life of older adult residents and patients and can lead to systemic diseases, such as cardiovascular disease, stroke, and pneumonia, the leading cause of death in LTC. Occupational therapists can play an instrumental role as oral care consultants, and educators, and can act as resource guides to raise the standards of oral care in LTC facilities.
This capstone project explored ways in which occupational therapy, a profession traditionally designated for …

Nurse Managers' Hiring Selection Of Newly Licensed Rns: A Grounded Theory Approach, Susan Adamek
Nurse Managers' Hiring Selection Of Newly Licensed Rns: A Grounded Theory Approach, Susan Adamek
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The purpose of this research study was to construct a substantive grounded theory regarding how acute care nurse managers select the newly licensed RNs (NLRNs) they hire. This is important because a good selection process can reduce expensive employee turnover and improve teamwork on units. There has been extensive research regarding interventions that improve the retention of NLRNs after they are hired, such as residency programs, preceptors, mentors and support groups, but there is very little in the literature about the processes or preferences nurse managers use to select the right candidates to be hired. A constructivist grounded theory approach …

Survival Of The Fittest: The Role Of Linguistic Modification In Nursing Education, Brenda Strauch Moore
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
This project’s long term goal was to improve English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) nursing student retention. Improving the quality of multiple choice exams is a first crucial step. ESL students find multiple-choice exams to be one of the most challenging aspects of nursing school. One reason for this is the presence of linguistic errors in exam questions. Linguistic errors include: irrelevant question content, poor sentence structure, and culturally biased words or phrases. Non-ESL students are less affected because exams are written in their native language. Linguistic modification, as part of best practices in item writing, removes these types of errors. The U.S. Department …
Partnering With The Community For Establishment Of Alternate Care Sites During Disasters Or Emergencies: A Staff Training Matrix, Jean Marie Roberts
Partnering With The Community For Establishment Of Alternate Care Sites During Disasters Or Emergencies: A Staff Training Matrix, Jean Marie Roberts
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
An approach to fulfill a need for additional hospital beds during emergency and disaster situations has been establishment of alternate care sites (ACS). Kern County, California, with a population of about 856,000 and approximately 1,500 hospital beds, is at significant risk for inability to care for the medical needs of its residents in the face of a disaster or an emergency. Even the most conservative estimates of additional hospital beds requirements in a disaster or emergency would indicate the need for nine to ten ACSs accommodating up to 50 patients each in Kern County.
Recognizing the need for alternatives to …

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Health care providers are members of a helping profession and need to provide quality care to all members of society. As a result of current and projected demographic changes within the United States (U.S.), health care professionals are faced with the challenges of providing culturally competent care and fulfilling the role as the “helping profession.” From 2000 to 2010, the Asian population increased by 43.3%, the Hispanic population grew by 43%, the Native Hawaiian and other Pacific Islander population increased by 35.4%, the American Indian or Alaskan Native population increased by 18.4%, and the African American population increased by 12.3%. …
Improving Transitions Of Care In The Perioperative Setting, Brian Wayne Selig
Improving Transitions Of Care In The Perioperative Setting, Brian Wayne Selig
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
It is estimated that nearly 200,000 Americans die each year due to preventable medical mistakes (Gupta, 2012), and nearly 80% of all medical errors involve some form of miscommunication between healthcare providers (Joint Commission Center for the Transformation of Healthcare, 2013). Handoffs, or the transitioning of patient care from one provider to another, occur multiple times each day in the hospital setting and done incorrectly can lead to significant mistakes in patient care.
The purpose of this project was to improve the quality of handoffs that occurred between perioperative and inpatient nurses at an urban, tertiary medical center. A shared …
Getting Started With Debriefing For Meaningful Learning, Kristina Dreifuerst
Getting Started With Debriefing For Meaningful Learning, Kristina Dreifuerst
College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications
Debriefing for Meaningful Learning© (DML) is a method of debriefing that can be used in simulation environments and other clinical settings to foster student's reflective thinking and learning. It has been used successfully with prelicensure nursing students, graduate nursing students, and interdisciplinary health care students throughout the nursing curriculum with positive learning outcomes. This method can be challenging to learn because it uses Socratic questioning and principles of active learning to uncover thinking associated with actions, but once learned, DML can be a model for reflective thinking that students can use to develop clinical reasoning and become reflective practitioners. Moreover, …

Purpose: Fatigue is the most common and distressing symptom reported by cancer patients during and after treatment. Tumor growth increases oxidative stress and cytokine production, which causes skeletal muscle wasting and cardiac dysfunction. The purpose of this study was to determine whether treatment with the antioxidant ubiquinol improves muscle mass, cardiac function, and behavioral measures of fatigue in tumor-bearing mice.
Method: Adult female mice were inoculated with colon26 tumor cells. Half the control and tumor-bearing mice were administered ubiquinol (500 mg/kg/day) in their drinking water. Voluntary wheel running (i.e., voluntary running activity [VRA]) and grip strength were measured at Days …

Factors That Affect Adherence With Long-Term Controller Medications Used To Manage Asthma In Children, Brittany Bowks
Factors That Affect Adherence With Long-Term Controller Medications Used To Manage Asthma In Children, Brittany Bowks
HIM 1990-2015
Problem: Asthma affects one out of every ten children in the United States. It is recommended that children with persistent asthma take long-term controller (LTC) medications to achieve control. However, adherence varies, and many children do not take their LTC medication at all. The average cost for hospitalization of a child with asthma is $8,406. Asthma in children also contributes to school absenteeism and a decrease in quality of life. Objective: A literature review was performed to examine factors that affect adherence to LTC medications used to control asthma in children. Method: A literature review was performed using the CINAHL, …

The Effects Of Complementary Hippotherapy For Children With Austism Spectrum Disorder, Jamie Hicks
HIM 1990-2015
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is an intricate and complex disorder that continues to grow in its prevalence year after year. The disorder is based on decreased social communication with prevalent stereotypical behaviors and problems in sensory processing. Due to the disorder diagnosis based on a spectrum, each child is different in their severity, and thus requires individualized forms of therapies and treatments. The cause of ASD is unknown, which makes the treatment difficult to standardize. Desperate to find a regimen that benefits their child’s ability to function more successfully, more and more parents are utilizing complementary alternative medicine (CAM). The …

The results of this study provide some evidence of the benefits of developing faculty and nursing curricula that addresses the shift from an illness-based, acute hospital model, …
Training Clinical Judgment Skills For Interpreting Feeding Behavior In Preterm Infants: A Comparison Of Video And In Vivo Simulation, Jamesa R. Ewing
Training Clinical Judgment Skills For Interpreting Feeding Behavior In Preterm Infants: A Comparison Of Video And In Vivo Simulation, Jamesa R. Ewing
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Health and feeding outcomes for preterm infants depend upon healthcare providers’ ability to recognize non-verbal signs of distress during bottle-feeding. Methods of training future providers’ to interpret feeding behavior in preterm infants are unclear. This study used a pre-test/post-test design to compare the effects of in- vivo simulation and video-simulation training on students’ knowledge of feeding abnormalities, clinical judgment, and documentation accuracy. Fifty-two graduate level speech-language pathology students were assigned to the in-vivo (N= 27) or video-simulation (N= 25) group. Results revealed that both methods proved beneficial for increasing knowledge and clinical judgment skills. Participants trained using video-simulation training documented …
Nurses Caring For Adults With Autism In An Emergency Department: A Survey Of Knowledge, Shauna Marie Miller
Nurses Caring For Adults With Autism In An Emergency Department: A Survey Of Knowledge, Shauna Marie Miller
Doctoral Projects
Autism is a complex neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by social impairments, communication difficulties, and restricted, repetitive, and stereotyped patterns of behavior. The nurse (RN) in the emergency department (ED) plays an important role in the receiving, treatment, and management of the patient with autism. RNs must understand the unique challenges of caring for individuals with autism. Fortunately, autism is an active area of research, with copious resources available to assist those affected by this disorder; however, no studies were found evaluating nurses’ knowledge of autism and the number of resources for nurses caring for this population was limited. Nursing is an …
Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Home Visitation Is Associated With A Decrease In Home Care And Healthcare Utilization Errors In High Risk Infants, Rupalee Patel
Doctoral Projects
The Santa Clara Valley Health and Hospital System’s (SCVHHS) Babies Reaching Improved Development and Growth in their Environment (BRIDGE) program was developed in 2011 to optimize high risk infants' care transition from Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) to home. In addition to hospital discharge teaching and public health nursing efforts, NICU infants need further in home support given their medical vulnerability after discharge. The objectives of the SCVHHS BRIDGE program are to provide caregiver interventions to minimize home care errors after NICU discharge and to optimize health care access and utilization across the transition of care. SCVHHS NICU infants at …

Outcome Analysis And Quality Improvement For Inter-Hospital Transfers Of Pediatric, Carma Lynn Tobiassen
Outcome Analysis And Quality Improvement For Inter-Hospital Transfers Of Pediatric, Carma Lynn Tobiassen
Doctoral Projects
Pediatric patients who initially present to a community hospital setting can be adequately cared for the majority of the time, in the emergency department (ED), on the pediatric ward (PEDS), and the post anesthesia care unit (PACU). When a pediatric patient is in need of specialized care or is decompensating and becomes critically ill, initial medical stabilization is required and the identification of a critical care bed and admitting physician are needed in a timely manner. Inter-hospital transfers (IHT) of pediatric patients are frequent occurrences, as more and more areas are consolidating their resources and Pediatric Intensive Care beds are …
Developing A Patient Care Standard For Adolescents Based On A Nursing Needs Assessment, Kathryn Blake
Developing A Patient Care Standard For Adolescents Based On A Nursing Needs Assessment, Kathryn Blake
Doctoral Projects
Mental health patients often suffer from chronic medical conditions and psychiatric comorbidities requiring frequent emergency, primary care, and acute care visits (Douzenis et al., 2012). Caring for psychiatric patients in acute care hospitals has become an increasing burden on healthcare systems with processes in place to care for acute and critical care patients. Healthcare leaders, providers, emergency departments, and medical/surgical hospitals are straining to provide care for complex patients with acute medical conditions and complex mental health needs (Reiss-Brennan, Briot, Savitz, Cannon, & Staheli, 2010). Caring for children and adolescents with medical and psychiatric problems creates the need for a …
Exploring College Students' Perceptions Of College Gun Violence: A Meta-Analysis, Julia Chaw Chih Lee
Exploring College Students' Perceptions Of College Gun Violence: A Meta-Analysis, Julia Chaw Chih Lee
Doctoral Projects
College gun violence has been one of our nation’s most forefront issues in recent years. The present meta-analysis reviewed studies reporting college students’ perceptions about school/college gun violence in order to summarize the total effect and direction of these research findings. There were only two studies identified for this research topic: Study A and Study B. Combining the effect sizes from both studies could not be accomplished because there was not enough data from Study A to calculate the correlation coefficient(r) or standardized mean difference (SMD). The summary of the results of the two studies as a metaanalysis was more …

Bio-Identical Hormones Utilized For Treating Menopausal Symptoms: Are They Safe?, Maria D. White
Doctoral Projects
The use of compounded bioidentical hormones in the various forms of gels, creams, and troches has increased in popularity. The population of menopausal women is at a crossroads with the cascade of symptoms and determining what are their options. The Endocrine Society, the Food and Drug Administration, and the National Menopause Society do not support the use of bioidentical hormones, despite the support for bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) by the American Academy for Anti-Aging Medicine and other proponents for BHRT. The literature review reveals the need for studies documenting the safety of BHRT. The objective for this study was …
Pain Management At End Of Life When There Is A Co-Occurrence Of Substance Use Disorder: A Qualitative Metasynthesis, Kristina Olfson
Pain Management At End Of Life When There Is A Co-Occurrence Of Substance Use Disorder: A Qualitative Metasynthesis, Kristina Olfson
Doctoral Projects
Pain management, end of life (EOL) care, and substance use disorder (SUD) are individually identified as National healthcare challenges and priorities. Despite 50 years of advances in the understanding of pain management, pain is still inconsistently assessed and undertreated in all populations, including those with life limiting illness. When a patient with a life limiting illness and history of SUD is encountered, pain management becomes further complicated. Effective pain management for all patients, regardless of coexisting complications, is an ethical obligation of health care providers. Given the lack of research into EOL pain management of patients with SUD, it is …
