Investigating childbirth, one of the biggest moments of a woman’s life, this thesis examines the reasons behind women’s preferred birthing methods. This research explores the fundamental decisions women make during the birthing process: the amount of prenatal care mothers will receive, the type of health care provider they will use, picking the place of delivery, views on technological and medical interventions, and outlooks on natural childbirth. In addition to an extensive literature review, in-depth interviews with mothers, midwives, and obstetricians are used to examine the various controversies of childbirth. The purpose of this study was to explore the traditional BSN student's experience in choosing an initial area of practice and influences on this choice. Understanding of this experience is important for educators and healthcare agencies so they may utilize this information to improve the initial area of practice experience. This qualitative phenomenological study was based on van Manen's hermeneutic phenomenological approach. Data were collected through participant interviews that were analyzed for themes related to participant experiences of choosing an initial area of practice. The out of hospital (OOH) environment is chaotic, unpredictable and unforgiving. Paramedics are the primary providers of life-saving, OOH airway management, which includes respiratory assessment, bag-valve-mask ventilation (BVM), and endotracheal intubation (ETI). OOH ETI is the most difficult skill for which to obtain and retain clinical competence. Preventable patient care errors and deaths related to OOH ETI are a healthcare concern. In the United States, 74.6% of patients who have lumbar laminectomy surgery have residual low back pain (Hussain & Erdek, 2014) and overall costs of low back pain may reach up to $200 billion per year (Carey & Frebuger 2013). To further address this problem, a study was conducted to determine if treatment in a chronic pain clinic could result in a reduction in the development of a chronic pain state for adult patients who have had lumbar laminectomy surgeries. Unplanned extubations (UE) are a preventable adverse event which occurs when intubated patients have their endotracheal tubes (ETT) accidentally dislodged from their airway. The method of securing the ETT has been identified as the most common reason for unplanned extubations (Veldman et al. , 2006). This study examined the impact of health policy on infant mortality. Public Use Data Files were used to assess differences in groups before and after the initiation of health policy as law. House Bill 1983 restricted the delivery of infants before 39 weeks gestation when born by elective induction or elective cesarean section. Infants born prematurely are at higher risk for adverse outcomes. A total of 3,078 identified infants were included in the sample. Infants were categorized according to their gestational age of 33-34 weeks, 35-36 weeks, and greater than 37 weeks. Data analyzed showed no statistical significance in the …

Diabetes has reached epidemic levels, to the currently estimated 29 million individuals who are living with diabetes. Those with diabetes must manage their disease through a combination of medication, physical activity recommendations, and nutritional guidelines. The consequences of non-adherence to recommendations include cardiovascular disease, kidney failure, vision loss, or ultimately, death. Despite the risks of non-adherence, individuals often do not adhere to recommended treatment. The study purpose was to evaluate the effectiveness of a structured education curriculum with simulation training in educating undergraduate Baccalaureate of Science in Nursing (BSN) students to recognize and respond to patients experiencing acute deterioration as first responders. Researchers have demonstrated a lack of adequate clinical reasoning skills in new graduate nurses is a factor in critical patient incidents. A mixed methods design using a quasi-experimental, repeated measures and a descriptive, qualitative approach was used. A convenience sample of 48 BSN students was recruited. Purpose: The primary objective for this retrospective chart review was to evaluate provider adherence to the 2011 AHA/ASA Primary Stroke Prevention guideline of prescribing a statin to all diabetic patients for primary prevention of stroke, regardless of dyslipidemia. A second aim of this study is to identify provider facilitators and barriers to prescribing a statin therapy for primary prevention.

Methods: Using a retrospective study design, a random sample of 100 medical records of diabetic patients presenting to a university women’s health clinic within the previous year were reviewed for statin use and rationale.

This qualitative study used a descriptive interpretive approach that drew heavily on the methodological underpinnings of interpretive phenomenology in order to explore the lived experience of Noongar women in childbirth. The aim of the study was to give voice to Noongar women, who despite having poorer outcomes than the wider population, remain marginalised and mute in childbirth reform. The purpose of the study was to acknowledge as authoritative, Noongar women’s wisdom and understanding of their childbirth experience.

The condition is more common in individuals over the age of 65 and commonly causes dyspnea, fatigue, orthopnea, nocturnal dyspnea, edema, and activity intolerance. Prior studies suggest a relationship between HF-related physical symptoms and depressive symptomatology in individuals living with HF. Depressive symptomatology in individuals with HF are linked with a higher mortality rate, decreased quality of life, decreased functional status, and disturbed sleep. We examine longitudinal extensions of the two-method measurement design, which uses planned missingness to optimize cost-efficiency and validity of hard-to-measure constructs. These designs use a combination of two measures: a “gold standard” that is highly valid but expensive to administer, and an inexpensive (e.g., survey-based) measure that contains systematic measurement bias (e.g., response bias). Using simulated data on four measurement occasions, we compared the cost-efficiency and validity of longitudinal designs where the gold standard is measured at one or more measurement occasions.
